Your favourite military commander(s)

Who is/are your favourite military commander(s) and why?

It can be anytime between 5000BC and now.[5000BC is because it was the start of "civilised-civillisation"]

As for me,my favourite military commanders are as follows:

Yue Fei of the Chinese Song Dynasty Period. He was dedicated and loyal to the Song imperial army and he was not only strategically-smart,but also academically-smart.Maybe the real reason why he is one of my favourite is because I read a lot of stories on him.

Georgi Zhukov, the WW2 Soviet Tank commander,is also my favourite military commander. Why?Maybe it's because I had played Panzer General and he is in it,maybe because he was "the man who really beat Hitler",but it is because "he was a genius of strategy and deception, a great planner, and he could inspire men. But he was also ruthless, extremely severe and unforgiving."

Hermann Goering, the WW2 German luftwaffe[air force] marshall. The Luftwaffe back then had dominated the skies early on during WW2,and it was just cool, and if they could do that,it is the work of the commander-Hermann Goering.

Erwin Rommel/Bernard Montgomery.Good strategies,planning and leadership.

Hannibal- The man who went through the Alps and nearly brought the mighty Roman Empire to its knees.  He always made sure the sun was in the enemy's eyes and used several other innovative strategies.  Unfortunately for Hannibal, his elephant force was startled by horse blood and would try to run away.  Eventually he had to order any panicking elephant be killed.

My thoughts exactly ;)

And Caid, your grand uncle is a long time favorite of mine too :)

Rommel, His tactics in the 7th panzer division in crushing through france, the 7th Panzer division was named the Ghost division becouse no one could find it, not even the high command, having some 12 divisions hold off the entire allied invasion force in Normandy for a good while.

Leeb and Rhudstein were also decent Generals..

others but cant think right now

Rommel was loyal to hitler, the rumor that he was part of a coup to kill him is pure BS, some a crazy fool wrote that rommel would be their choice for the ruler of Germany after they killed hitler

Rommel also refused to execute his prisoners and treated them the same as his own men

Rommle had conflicting loyalties, during the invasion of poland Rommel was beside Hittler all the time and was seduced by hitlers chrisma.

In afrika when the war was going badly Rommle felt abandoned by Hitler and resentment for the italions for not helping enough, He later was again sudenced by hitlers chrisma and stationed in northern italy where he was very lenient on italion partisans.

He however begain again to hate hitler when the order came to hold the panzer divisions back and not send them to crush to the allies, The Germans had lost some 40,000 men in a number of weeks and had only recived 10,000 reiniforcements. Rommle felt abaonded and openly critizied hitler infront of other Generals, but Hitler ignored this becouse of his military skills, but when a prisinor mentioned his name for leading post war germany. Hitler offerd him a kanagaroo trial or sucide and his family would be safe, rommle picked the later. But he had no love for the Furher.

He was loyal to Hitler but never agressive towards him...

Scipio Africanus: an amazing stratagest and tactician, as well as a wonderful man with a humble heart.

Zu Ge Liang: lived during the waning years of the Han dynasty. Helped out Liu Bei, a distant relative to the emperor, and was the cornerstone in building a huge army that almost conquered all of china, during the three kingdoms period of Wu, Shu, and Way. He is considared the greatest stratagest/tactician of all time in China, worshipped by some as a God. he was also a wonderful man, with wisdom in many arts. Also a master of Go (my favorite board game).

Alexander the Great: You can't get an Empire like that without some pretty devious military work.

Octavian: Upsetting, but he defeated Cleopatra's army when his finances were virtually nil by using smaller, faster ships. More of a politician than anything else I suppose but it won him the battle and eventually Egypt.

Bismark: Does he count? Unified Germany; beat France, Austria, etc...

Saladin.

Richard the Lionheart? Possibly.

That was said with a grinning smilie, but to be honest he is brilliant in the military sense.  He did play a key role (with US backing) in driving the Soviets from Afghanistan.  He isn't one of my favorite military commanders, but I will give him a grudging respect as more than competent.
