I thought we should have a break from all the politics and the neverending arguments about the pressing issues of today, which will be forgotten tomorrow. After all, in the great scheme of things they are only dust in the wind... Let's look at the big picture, and into the future.

I want to hear your opinions about the future of Mankind:

1. What is the best, brightest future we could have? (keeping things realistic, of course)

2. What is the worst future possible? (again, keep it realistic)

3. Finally, what is the most likely future for Mankind?

Make sure you mention the timeframe... (decades/centuries/millenia/whatever)

This should be interesting. :)

1) Probably humankinds united peace, for one reason of course, such as a war with another species (Not trying to be unrealilistic but there has to be aliens, we dont own the whole universe ourselves).

2) WWIII or the end of humanity by our own hand.

3) Well, as time has always proven, more time will bring more war and death so thats our fate.

1. What is the best, brightest future we could have? (keeping things realistic, of course) World United, Under A global Cause, Green un charred world, Happy people, with un corupt leaders. Mars, And Moon Colonized.

2. What is the worst future possible? (again, keep it realistic) Asteroid impact, Kills billions on impact, rest slowly starve to death i nuke winter

3. Finally, what is the most likely future for Mankind?

Chocked to death on are own polution. World Griped By Tolitarium Dictators. World Fighting over Scraps of resources with a few nations actully trying to fight for humanity and not for $$$$

1) Someone could suddenly discover a renewable and cheap fuel that didn't harm the enviroment to replace oil. It could also be formed into plastics, etc. This would mean America would not attack Irag, and in time (a few decades?) everything would be patched up. In the interim, everyone invited would join the EU, and then make peace with everyone else. And then all the countries would see how much money they were making now that an army was unnecessary and commit to peace. This in turn would bring about a policy of non-interferance in other countries buisness. Not everyone would be happy, but at least nobody would die in a war/of global warming.

2) Global warming would melt the icecaps and the sea would rise, wars would start and new 'super-bugs' would arise. With all the water, low-lying fields would cease to exist and there would be a food shortage. Chaos would ensue as the people figured out that nobody could help them and the end was nigh and anarchy would rule. Thus we have Pestilance, Famine, War... ... water and chaos.

3) We shall eventually see the sense of the first but it will be too late and the second will take place.

1. One individual will get the ultimate power, becoming the world's dictator

2. One individual with fanatical apocalyptic view will decide to end the world via the use of a biogenetic viral strain

3. If I'm that individual - I would go with #1.

Not if I get there first.

1. Something like in Star Trek-A democratic government, socialist economic system, united world, perhaps even a group of planets (assuming there is other intelligent life out there), great technological leaps, no religious bickering or racism, etc.

2. Total nuclear apocalypse.

3. Probably somewhere in between the two.

1. What is the best, brightest future we could have? (keeping things realistic, of course).

A: Well, inventing machines so that I won't have to clean the house or trash away money to the housecleaner :P. That all deceases expires (a cure etc) and that people all around the world will live hand in hand, somehow.

2. What is the worst future possible? (again, keep it realistic).

A: Probably World War 3, or someone who will control mankind under a facist regime for some long time (I think the Bible mentioned that a man will try to unite the world, and claim that he is Jesus, when in fact he is the devil).

3. Finally, what is the most likely future for Mankind?

A: I don't think there will be either a new world war, or a miracle 50 years golden age. Compared to movies and books, I have realized that this world is in fact not that fast developping. There won't be any Blade Runner cities by the year 2019, simple fact. What I could imagine however, is a world that looks like the world we see in Deus Ex, seriously. Actually, the only thing that separates that world from ours is the conspiration and the ones behind it. The world itself (except of course the status of the world), physically, could indeed be very real in 2052. Anyways, I will imagine 2052 as I see it in the game until I see any change :P.

Besides that, the question is hard to answer...

hmmmm w/o reading edrics post, I gather it is posing 3 questions.

I'll answer #2.

Worst possible future: Allow dictators to develop and stockpile weapons of mass destruction, then over time, their supply reaching into the tens of thousands of nukes, to their inevitable use on human populations

Posted

1. A dune Future, some 20000 years from now.

2. Extermination of human race. 50-10000 years

3. Take all human history and compute what has happened in the past to predict the future. (war then peace then war then peace etc.)

3. Finally, what is the most likely future for Mankind?

1: Mankind could begin to grow out of it's stagnation of atomics and harsh weapons of war, new countries take the place of the old currupt ones. Misunderstandings of religions are resolved. Mankind begins finding ways of channeling aggression and hate towards other peaceful things. Using their zealousness towards things that benefit us. Colonies made outside of our usual influence on this earth would be made to decrease global population. Genetic Alteration of food would happen to increase crop production. irrigation of deserts and other harsh lands would be accomplished in order to encurage growth of plantlife. things that are bad for the environment are slowly taken out of everyday life, and new cleaner sources of energy and the like are put in place of our old technology. reoxygenation of our planet wiht new plantlife and revitalization of the upper atmosphere using the latest technology in order to increase protection from the radiation of the sun.

That stuff is the best way to go IMO. It wont happen though. You cant realy be realistic on this one. That is why number three question is there.

2: Governments disband. Technocratic rulership takes its place. Class warfare is won by those who use the lower class. The lower class reverts to a slave state over the entire earth, while the rich are only the top 1 %. They would control the entire population by their own bias views. Pollution raises, new diseases mutate and become uncurable. Cultures homogenize and all live in one closed minded attitude. I.E. one religion, one thought of government, one focus on hope, lack of desire for the future. People become drones. Basically an orwellian anti utopia.

3: Globalism will spread throughout the world. Economics will no longer be handled by individual nations and a large international trade group will control all monetary matters for all federated nations. Wars will be faught in a matter of trade embargos and restrictions. Technocratic governmental systems will replace the old ways of democracy and republicanism. the monetary classes of the world will become more spread out. The rich will only be a small minority with large power while the minority will be vast and taken advantage of. That is my opinion on how it goes.

Of course I think the Lord will come and take care of this stuff. Kinda sad future how I see it. But we will be saved eventually. :)

Wow, you have to turn everything into a political discussion, don't you?

1. Best future? The best future I can realisticly happening is that the United Nations actually becomes the ruling world power, and treats all member nations with dignity, respect, a common set of laws, yet lets them maintain limited sovereignity.

2. Worst Future? This is supposed to be realistic, correct? A massive, coordinated series of terrorist strikes takes out most of the major nations' capital cities. In panic, fear, and the resulting chaos military dictatorships establish themselves and a revolution of repression against people occurs. Eventually this leads to a degredation of living and health conditions. Thus immune systems become weaker and viruses once easily cured begin to kill off the population...all the while the effects of global warming melts the ice caps and pollution continues to make air poisonous and the ozone layer all but disappears.

3. Most likely future? War, peace, war, peace, war, peace, someone is slapped with a trade embargo, war, peace...and the cycle goes on and on.

1. What is the best, brightest future we could have? (keeping things realistic, of course)

That is hard if you won't say what is realistic future. Do you mean next 10, 100 or 1000 years? For next 10 years there are no positive radical changes, just we Slovaks will join NATO and EU, what will change some systems here. For next 100 years the best possibility will be if EU will turn into a federation with seven parts, and our country will be in the biggest - Visegrad group, also with constitution using terms of christian culture. And if China will be democratic, ensuring stability in its region.

2. What is the worst future possible? (again, keep it realistic)

If there'll be no union because the Europe will be full of Arab and Chinese refugees, which start to show their nationalism. They will come; if we'll attack Iraq now, they'll come now, if not, Saddam will attack Israel, Iran or Saudi Arabia in close time and then we'll have them too. But it isn't worst possibility. Imagine North Korea invading south again or Zjuganov or Zirinovskij becoming russian president...

3. Finally, what is the most likely future for Mankind?

Nothing will change in close time. In next 50 years there will be just a few oil, so we will use mostly electric cars, I hope so, at least I hate that smell of smog in Bratislava at the morning. Maybe the House Bush would loss its power due to it too ;D

1. ?

2.

The population level will increase, and sure that will be clones. Every city will be bigger, and also the water level. There will be more global hunger and people will start eating each other, If they are not killed by a nuke or a virus. Earth would be entirelly polluted and most of the species would dissapear.

3. Because of the population level, most of the planets or moons of the solar system will be colonized. The humanity will travel trough the universe and will meet some extraterrestrial race. By that reason, a lot of people would suicide and a new war will begin:

The people that want to preserve the old human culture, against the people that wants the help of the extraterrestrial race.

1. The UN is the most powerfull body in the world. The UN is divided in small communities up to 20 million people. Because of the relative weakness of each individual nation there will be no more conflicts. This will take at least a couple of centuries.

2. Somehow, a nuclear war starts and most of mankind is blown into obvlivion. The rest is forced to live under the ground because most of the surface is unhabitable, for the next centuries.

3. The coming century we will have to endure another cold war, between the US on one side and China on the other side.

Oh, I'm gonna be there first. Trust me, I already have it all planned out.

Hmmm... I have said too much ;D

You'll have to get past me to put your plans in action!

Unless of course I'll have a favourable position in your system. :)

Then you'll have to get past Edric.

This is offtopic but it's not hurting anyone is it?

1. Poor countries get improvements, they too achieve a certain level of wealthiness, no more hunger, AIDS is curable and population growth decreases.

2. Wealthy and powerful countries get better, at the cost of the poor ones, making the differences between rich and poor countries bigger than ever. On one place people throw their big macs in the trash can, on the other place, hundreds of people die because of lack of food and medicaments.

3. US loses it's world dominating power, Europe keeps about the same role. US is still strong, but China is the most powerful country now, and India is also increasingly powerful. Whereas Europe for instance is dependant on the US for many things right now, this balance shifts to Asia, especially China.

Why would this happen? Isn't China and America good friends?
