THIS IS IT! GENERALS COMPARED TO EBFD: what you've all been waiting for.

ok ive been playing most of the night and last night. just logged another 3 hours.

i am now forming some solid opinions on this game:

FIRST, THE GOOD!

When you first log on, it does have a look and feel like EBFD. You go into a "lobby". You see all the hosted games on the left, and a handy list of all the players logged on in the right. This is kinda cool because you can see exactly everyone who is in the lobby, even though they might not be hosting a game.

ANother similar thing: Maps come in sizes just like in EMP. 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 player maps. There are 4 (i think) 8 player maps, so more to choose from.

A GREAT thing: You can host 8 player games, with up to 4 seperate teams!! ( cool!) So you can host an 8 player game with 2 teams of 4, or even 4 teams of 2. Or 2 teams of 3 and 1 team of 2. Anything you want.

ANOTHER PLUS: You can CHOOSE YOUR STARTING POSITION before the game starts! WHile in the game room, just click on the "rock" on the map, and you'r number will be placed there meaning that you will start the game on that rock.

You can play 3 countries- just like in EMP. China, USA, or GLA (a terrorist group)

BIG PLUS: The CHINA and GLA superweapons in this game are AWESOME (usa's suck). China has a nuclear bomb and it looks really...REALLY cool! A mushroom cloud forms on your screen while an atomic fireball vaporizes units- you can actually see their particles incinerate and their shadows are burned into the ground. lol.

THE DOWNS:

First, and foremost: The servers SUCK....****BAD****

this I would THINK would be fixed. I mean they suck so bad it is unreal. You'd think they were running commodore 64's.

You log on and theres only like 300 people online, yet the lag is so horrendus, it can take like 20 seconds just for the game list to be updated. And the list is so long, scrollbars appear in your window. And here is the REALLY bad part: it refreshes continuously- like once a second. So the list is constantly rebuilding. As you try to scroll down the list of games (or players), suddenly it refreshes and your cursor jumps all over the place. HIGHLY ANNOYING!

If you type in the game lobby, it can take several seconds- even almost 20 seconds (yup, I counted it once) for your chat to appear...THAT is how lagged it is. I'm baffled by it. only 300 people and lagged like that?

One Pentium Xeon server can easily connect a thousand users. So whats the problem EA?

GAMEPLAY:

USA: Sucks!

China: Owns USA

GLA: Unknown- havent seen much of it so far, but seems to get owned by China.

This game is all about MOB vs. MOB. Defense isn't as much of an issue here as in EMP. Your base is not protected by terrain, it is vulnerable everywhere. you can have your whole mob on one side of your base and get hit from behind and its over. There is a ton of micro needed to build cash and units. Ironically enough, there is virtually no micro needed to use them in battle. You click your mouse a thousand times making the crap, and then click it once to fight a war. What the? Strategy consists not in unit combo's like in EMP- strategy is really focused on TERRAIN and MAKING MONEY/UNITS. With such wide open bases, you need to be OFFENSIVE or you will lose. period.

If you play USA, be warned! THEY SUCK. seriously, i know i'm just a noob, but i honestly cannot see how they can withstand any China rusher. their units are sooo weak. Their Air Force dominates China and GLA, but that don't mean squat cuz it takes too long to build one. they will be dead by then.

Ill write more about it later. So far, I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it is kinda fun mobbin my army up. but might get boring.

well emp, i have disagree on USA subject, i thnk they own everyone lol

With spy drones on vechicles Tomahawk tanks can take out ure entire army of overlords or wutever. Basically to me it seems that Tomahawks are Atreides Minotaurs- great range and great damage. AND COMANCHES .... they kick the shit out of everything when used with tomahawks and paladin tanks. A horde of overlords or any other vehicle group, will be taken down by 4-6 Comanches fiering there rocket barrage.

I think gameplay like Red Alert 2:Yuri, 3Sides, but some sides using trading like (GLA)!

USA:ALLIED

USSR:China

GLA:YURI!

hmm thats a shame, I liked the fact that in Emp you can have both long and short games and even medium games =)

although the 8 player games sound really awesome, but will any connection/comp handle it?

I'm afraid I have to agree with Kazaaliteuser...

For one thing, the game has no actual storyline and no campaign worthy of the name. The so-called "campaigns" are nothing but a loose collection of scenarios with no connection between them whatsoever. There are no characters in the "story" and no movies. You don't even know what the hell you're fighting for!

There is nothing but mindless fighting in various places of the world (all of which are in Asia), without any hint of an actual purpose or even a reason for why anything is happening. Basically, the terrorists are attacking you because they feel like it, and without any purpose in mind.

Also, the game is a lot more similar to Starcraft than to Command & Conquer. The interface is fully Blizzard-style, except for the role of the mouse buttons (left/right click)...

I don't know about the multiplayer and game balance yet, but from what I heard they're not particulary good either...

Pff, from what I hear it has sys specs to high for its graphics, no matter how impressive they are, piss poor servers and lacks balance.

And Edric, Duke Leto said that there were movie scenes. Does this have anything to do with your semi legal copy?

Well at least you got a server to play on, here in europe the server is even not working yet :-

No, I have the full version. And I know what he's talking about, there are movie-like scenes, made with the game engine (like the interludes in Warcraft 3). The only problem is that they're purely battle scenes, and add NOTHING to the story whatsoever. You might as well zoom in all the way and watch an ordinary battle.

oh goodness no. 8 player games will only work if all 8 players are high bandwidth, meaning no modems. you probably wont even connect if you got 8 players with people on 56k.

well perhaps...I'll have to try that. but I played USA for my first 4 games and get owned by China. Then I played all china last night and won all my games. lol. Granted, I am a total noob at the game, but it sure seems like the USA tanks are inferior to China's. I'll try it out.

But you can host a 4 or 6 player match and fill up the vacant spaces with computer players.

It is good that you can team up players and ai by simply choosing team number at the start of the game

I started winning games today by playing with GLA army.

An extensive use of the tunnel network and many stinger sites is a good tactic to improve your odds to win the game

Posted

hey rigel, how easy/hard is it to "tunnel" inside someone's base. I found that bases are very spread out and not always well guarded. is it feasible to tunnel to someone's base early in the game?

Posted

Well, it takes a long time for the worker to go to the enemy base and build up an tunnel entrance.

If you want to use that strat, make sure you got some tanks or troopers to protect your worker when he starts building it.

As soon as the tunnel is finished, let the worker construct a stinger site to protect your tunnel and keep up sending troops to the enemy base by using the tunnel.

LOL workers keep shouting "this is hard work" and "i am hungry" ;D

I just don't exactly undertand what you are saying, please elaborate more. Thx.

He's talking about how when you're in a lobby the list refreshes every 2 secounds rather than waiting for you to prompt it to refresh so a game is here one second

and here the next. >:(

Or at least I think that that is what he means.

Well said. And Yes, multiplayer has alot of bugs, and i had several errors when i went online.

you have a list of all the games- dozens of them. Imagine logging into to EMP and having 100 games being hosted. They would not all fit on your screen, so you have scrollbars. now, as you are scrolling through the list, lets say you are scrolling through games #65-75, the list REFRESHES and your cursor jumps to game #30. So now you have to scroll 2 more screens to get back to where you were...

BUT OOPS

IT JUST REFRESHED AGAIN

lol

this makes it very difficult to join "Zamboes Game" because you cant even get to it!!!

generals in a pro USA propaganda only, not a game at all

Generals is selling for $99.95 in Australia. I'm not going to waste that much money just on one computer game. Microsoft Flight Simulator, professional edition, ok I can handle the hudge price tag on that, but Generals? LMAO!!

I think I'll wait until it comes out as a classic, the graphics seem to suck, and the requirements are just blown over the top.

Posted

lol, the Graphics are AWESOME. THE BEST to date.

And about the server thing, there's a patch out for that ALREADY.

Another note: Generals had already been laid out BEFORE 9/11.
