So, I hope greed isn't only motivation of people to live.

The people in Cuba do get decent education. Furthermore, Cuba has more docters per capita then the US.

Czechoslovakia between 1948-1989 had also more, but quality of their education wasn't best. Castro cares about those "masses" around him. Wow, he built schools and hospitals. And western Europe did it not? Also, they've did it without political prisoners. Then, see the quality. Capitalistic institutions are far better than communistic.

Jeez, give commies a chance. Cuba is the first communist system to actually work- of course it won't be perfect.

If during the cold war you lived in the US, and you were a communist, you would not be taken in prison, but you would be shunned from society and would never have a chance to get a job.

That's the problem. We GAVE them a chance! In 1948 in the Czech half of republic they won regular elections, but soon they knocked out Slovak winner (Democratic Party) and revolted. And that was only start. Prisoning? Not only they've prisoned priests, "political enemies", "reactioners" or "kulaks", but many of them were murdered by this regime.

True communism does not work because if everyone gets the same income, then some will pick up that they don't have to do the same amount of work and still get the same income. Then people become lazy, while others do the hard work. Then the hard-workers become pissed off and simply do not work as hard since others don't. The workplace falls, then the economy falls, then communism falls. But that may just be my opinion.

I'm not entirely informed of the wage height in Cuba, but the reason Cuba isn't super wealthy is that Batistas rich friends packed up and left with their stolen money when Castro took over.

If you want a more respectable position, you work for it. A doctor obviously gets more respect then a farmer. IMHO, the wages should be different, but let's keep income dispairity reasonable. It's starting to get ridiculous when say the 40 % richest outearn the 40 % poorets by more then 150 %.

The eastern countries were just Soviet puppets. Russia already was perverted and corrupt, so what do you expect?

Worst was that we were not puppets, altough political situation after Jalta conference was looking like it. That's worst. Our nation voted for it. In 1968 commie leader Dubcek wanted to reform it, but Soviets intervened. Then was too late.

Dang...sorry, I thought you were Djcid- you both have planets as your avatar.

There should be advantages for more complicated and demanding jobs. Wage would be one thing, but a doctor would earn more common respect then a farmer. If a nations people is raised from birth on to strife for material wealth, communism wouldn't suit that nation.

And that proves that your communist regime was indeed a puppet (just like every other communist regime in Eastern Europe).

"Puppet" won't do such try. Better word should be "slave". Senile Roosvelt and egoistical Churchill sacrificed Czechoslovakia to maintain short alliance with Soviets.

They barely managed to save Western Europe! It was a wonder that the Soviets did not get more countries. You can't blame Churchill and Roosevelt. If it wasn't for American nukes, Stalin could have mopped the floor with them without much effort.

That's what the Normandy landing was all about - getting allied troops as far east as possible, to prevent the Red Army from marching all the way to the Atlantic.

Europe came very close to being unified after World War 2 - under the Soviet banner.

You have truth, EdricO. But Czechoslovakia was only pre-war democratic state in central Europe, also Patton reached Pilsen, if he wasn't stopped by high US command for "political reasons", he would liberate whole country without russians. Or at leas Czech half. Remember that Prag fought even on 9th May.

But what to do? At least half of Europe is saved and built EU. Future largest country... ::)
