MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Police used a stun gun on a 6-year-old boy in his principal's office because he was wielding a piece of glass and threatening to hurt himself, officials said Thursday.

The boy, who was not identified, was shocked with 50,000 volts on October 20 at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School.

Principal Maria Mason called 911 after the child broke a picture frame in her office and waved a piece of glass, holding a security guard back.

When two Miami-Dade County police officers and a school officer arrived, the boy had already cut himself under his eye and on his hand.

The officers talked to the boy without success. When the boy cut his own leg, one officer shocked him with a Taser and another grabbed him to prevent him from falling, police said.

He was treated and taken to a hospital, where he was committed for psychiatric evaluation.

"By using the Taser, we were able to stop the situation, stop him from hurting himself," police spokesman Juan DelCastillo told The Miami Herald.

The case was under review.

Damn, not that the poor kid wouldnt've needed therapy sooner or later, but given the immobalizing weapons available I think mace would've done the job, vs. early childhood shock therapy.

ya tazor was probably the best way for them to go... as acriku said he was cut under his eye... that would have probably hurt worse than anything he's ever felt in his life... the tazor just immobilizes people.

Then again maybe he would've needed shock therapy sooner or later also.  :P

Yes negotitating with a 6 year old can be tricky if you do not have Yu Yu Hakusho cards or a Gamecube. This was the best way to handle the sitution without physically harming the child. If the little crumbsnatcher can break a picture and use the glass as a weapon then he might grab an officer's gun. My verdict taser that butt.

MIAMI - Police have acknowledged using a stun gun to immobilize a 12-year-old girl just weeks after an officer jolted a first-grader with 50,000 volts.

Police Director Bobby Parker defended the decision to use a Taser on the 6-year-old boy last month because he was threatening to injure himself with a shard of glass. But Parker said Friday that he could not defend the decision to shock the fleeing girl, who was skipping school and apparently drunk.

According to the incident report, officer William Nelson responded to a complaint that children were swimming in a pool, drinking alcohol and smoking cigars on the morning of Nov. 5.

Nelson said he noticed the girl was intoxicated and was walking her to his car to take her back to school when she ran away through a parking lot.

Nelson, 38, said he chased her and yelled several times for her to stop before firing the Taser when she began to run into traffic. The electric probes hit the girl in the neck and lower back, immobilizing her.

After the last Hurricane passed through here the cops were chasing some guy I guess who was looting through my sisters yard we were all there watching when this cop suddenly jumps out with a taser gun and lit his ass up then flopped to the ground.  I have to admit it was pretty cool and effective.

After reading that article Scar, I am flabbergasted as to why they say the officer could not defend his usage of the taser on the girl. She was running into oncoming traffic! This poses a threat to the girl, and to everyone else on the streets! I commend that officer for his actions, and fast-thinking.

me too, why are people so stupid to the fact that they are saving these people's lives? It's not like they are using rubber bullets or billy clubs

She is a healthy 12-year girl that electric shock is not going to kill her. If it had been say a senior citzen I would think twice about using the taser. That girl's mother should stop complaining and start montoring her child's activities better.

I would rather taser people than have to use a sidearm in certain situtions. Two facts remain that 1.) the girl was intoxicated running into traffic

beacause a lot of people, and I'm not one of them, think that "chocktherapy" is brutal and should not be allowd,

but: it leaves no outer scars on the perons boddy and besides being chocked the person is fine after a coupple of hours(?)

so I think people are afraid of waht they can not understand or comprehend (is this the right spelling?)

my verdict: taser it is more humaan

people will never understand what cops go through... if you do a ride along you will see some crazy ass people, and you will sit there and wish you were able to smack some of the people you see.  most cops are very leniant on what they do, but people always look for ways to say that they were abusiver o w/e because they are the "good people" that "never do anything wrong, and aren't criminals because they never break the law" ... ya well guess what when you do stupid shit that's illegal, you're a damn criminal, so get over it.

“The police could have handled this better,” said the boy’s mother, Kathy Rojas. “They did not have to shoot him.”

This is the mothers response to her kid being stunned. I would be curious to hear what she has to say on her child acting like that to begin with? I didn't see any such comment. Ever notice the lousy parents are always looking for anyone but themselves to blame?

Yep, and Always the first ones to complain about police brutality when law enforcement has to baby-sit thier damn kids.  When the police bring thier sorry asses home they should taser them two just for being dumbass parents.

the new tazers are different(for cops) though some law enforcement still carry the one shot close range tazers.  the new ones shoot out two barbed tiped needle type things. (essentially a fish hook that is straightened out) and they may stick in a person anywhere, depending on the range obviously.  then there is a current supplied to them both and it goes through the body. It makes people either seize up and fall like a tree or kind of have spazms and go down like that. And unlike the one shot tazers these can be used multiple times without replacing the batteries ( i believe)
