Agree with Star Trek at number 1, it deserves the spot (even though one could argue other shows are better quality, it is the epitome of the cult show).

The X-Files wasn't relaly a cult show, it was a manstream hit.

Buffy deserves its spot, even though Angel was higher quality, Buffy is the one that started it all.  Firefly should have been on the list as well.  Amazing show, tons of awards and critical Kudos, cancelled set records for DVD sales and came back as a movie.

Farscape:  Ew.

Monty Python:  Never saw enough of the shwo to judge.

The Simpsons:  Again, mroe mainstream that cult, but I guess it can stay.

7. THE PRISONER:  Never saw it.

8. THE TWILIGHT ZONE:  Ditto.

9. XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS:  Hercules was better, Zena jsut got the press 'cause of the whoel elsbian undertones.

10. PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE:  Watched ti as a kid, but don't remember it.

11. MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000:  Never saw it.

12. FAMILY GUY:  Damn straight.

13. BABYLON 5:  Ew.

14. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST:  Never saw it.

15. QUANTUM LEAP:  Saw it as a kid, but don't remember it.

16. MY SO CALLED LIFE:  Never saw it.

17. THE AVENGERS:  Same as above.

18. DOCTOR WHO:  See two shows ago.

19. DARK SHADOWS:  Look up (also, the WB's new version of it starring Alec Newman has been cancelled).

20. TWIN PEAKS:  Saw a couple episodes, not enough to judge.

21. MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN:  Never heard of it.

22. H.R. PUFNSTUF:  Look up.

23. FOREVER KNIGHT:  A Can-con classic on a TV Guide list?

24. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS:  Never seen it.

25. FREAKS AND GEEKS:  Dad love dit, I didn't.

1. STAR TREK - Of course.  Much deserving of this spot.

2. THE X-FILES - Meh.  Good show.  Wouldn't put it so high on the list, though.

3. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - Never got into it, but it certainly had cult following.

4. FARSCAPE - Never got into it, but liked what I saw.

5. MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS - Damn straight!  One of the best shows ever.

6. THE SIMPSONS - Definately.  Although it is mainstream, it also has a separate cult following.

7. THE PRISONER - Never seen it, but it sounds really good.  I wish it were on TV.

8. THE TWILIGHT ZONE - Submission approved, Mr. Serling!

9. XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS - Hell no!  The earlier seasons of Herc were much better.  Xena sucked from the get-go.

10. PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE - All I remember is a talking chair, an annoying laugh, and a scandal...

11. MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 - That's the Ray Bradbury show, right?  Never seen it.

12. FAMILY GUY - Really good show.  I heard it was coming back.  I hope that's true.

13. BABYLON 5 - Never got into it myself (too hard to follow) but liked what I saw.  It certainly has a massive fan-base.

14. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - Huh?  Is this that real-life show that takes place in New York?  'Cause if it's what I'm thinking of, it sucks royally.

15. QUANTUM LEAP - Booyah.  One of my favourites.

16. MY SO CALLED LIFE - Never seen it.  Sounded dumb.

17. THE AVENGERS - Never seen it, but bowler hats are cool, so whatever.

18. DOCTOR WHO - One of my very favourites.  I'd put it much higher on the list myself.  Even as high as #2 or 3.

19. DARK SHADOWS - ???

20. TWIN PEAKS - Er... Kyle MacLachlan was in this!  Never seen it.

21. MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN - Never heard of it.

22. H.R. PUFNSTUF - Never heard of it.

23. FOREVER KNIGHT - OKay idea, I guess.  Never seen it myself.

24. ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS - I thought this was a movie.  Else, never heard of it.

25. FREAKS AND GEEKS - Meh.  OKay for a laugh, but nothing special.

Personally, I wonder why Red Dwarf isn't on this list, as well as some of the Irwin Allen series - The Time Tunnel; Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea; Lost in Space (one of my favourites, you nickel plated ninny!  Oh, the pain of it all!).

Absolutely Fabulous, or sometimes called Ab Fab, was a british comedy show starring two outrageous women living with a younger girl and overall it's pretty damn funny. I used to see it on E! when it got cancelled.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a show that has a man, and two robots, watch very old movies and make fun of them as it's being shown. Pretty funny jokes in there.

They never released a season straight to DVD.

But in England it seems like they do, on terrestrial they have only aired series 1 and 2.  :-

Well English TV companies obviously have better taste. A good example being 'Big Brother'

"7. THE PRISONER"

...continues on BBC4 tonight, for those people in the area who haven't noticed. It's good - I've seen two so far. Just expect to go to bed in the morning...

Right, I really like Red Dwarf, Angel and several other older or unmentioned television shows, but this is a list of cult classics.  A cult classic is a show who's following grows after it is cancelled.  It's mostly based on statistics and polls: pop culture.

Obviously a lot of people like Red Dwarf, but a lot more people like or claim to like Star Trek than have ever even heard of Red Dwarf.  Another way to look at it, however, is how many of these listed shows are still being rerun on television: Star Trek, Farscape, The Twilight Zone, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, Babylon 5, Beauty & the Beast, Quantum Leap, Doctor Who, Dark Shadows and Forever Knight are all still shown on Sci Fi.  Not to mention shows like the X Files, which is shown on, like, 3 or 4 different channels, or Law & Order, which is about the same.

In other words, people like what they're shown.  Culture is based on the popularity of thought and action.

Uh, well, Red Dwarf has been repeated quite a lot (in fact they're repeating RDVII at the moment for the second or third time, and goodness knows how many times RDI has gone out). It's described as cult by the BBC and the authors sell Red Dwarf books.

I must say, I think I've seen a single repeat of Dr Who and one documentary about it in the past 10 years, let alone many on your list I've never heard of.

"Not to mention shows like the X Files, which is shown on, like, 3 or 4 different channels, or Law & Order, which is about the same"

Well, anything shown on 4 channels leaves us with only one channel not showing it.

Really?  They don't show it here in the States that often, I saw it on PBS first, once a week, then BBC America until they tired of showing it.

May I remind you that TV Guide is an American publication?

Oh yeah, I read the first two Red Dwarf books, hilarious.

My point exactly, X-Files is such a cult following because it's forced down our throats at every turn.  I like the X-Files, but an episode is only good the first five times.

But there are a ton of cult classics they don't even mention: Blackadder, Highlander, M*A*S*H and Red Dwarf, for that matter.
