You can just talk about it here if you wish. But I'm in a hurry so I'll be brief.

I'm wrting an essay about it for philosophy class and I desperately need some overtones or clues for the characters Mouse, Switch and Apoc. E.g. Neo = Jesus. Anderson = Son of man. Cypher = Judas, etc.

Those three characters only please, help!

i have a question about it, The matrix is about the early 21st century right? So what happens..i mean does the program run on to the machine revolution and humanity gettings its butt whooped, or does it have a reset year?

Actually, the Matrix, or the first Matrix, that is, happens around 2199. But, since (if you have seen Reloaded), there has been 5 others "Ones", and Zion and all people in it have also been destroyed, I'd say the present Matrix (where Keanu Reeves is Neo :D ) happens around 2700 or 2800. As Morpheus said, they don't really know what year it is.

If you're doing it for a philosophy class, they only real thing you can get is Descartes "evil genius". And that other guy who's name I keep forgetting, the US philosopher chaning that eveil scientist into a computer. . .the script for the Matrix couldn't have been that expencive to write. . just copy past and change the names. .

If it's for philosophy it's kind of weird compairing one believe [ Christianety ] to another theory [ Descartes Evil genius ]trying to find connections between both that arn't ment to be there [ sorry, in my opinion they shouldn't be ].

No clue about that Ex, at this point. Although If your brains can be tricked into believing the story inside the Matrix sofar. . why not log into the Windows console of The Matrix and use the go back function. . . .you never know you have been "in the future" as they would be able to controle you thoughts upto that level. If that's wrong and the human brain just needs input which is provided by the machines, and humans are just living it and recording, . . . [ why even make a Matrix for the whole of humanity, souldn't it be easier to make a single one for every human ? ] I have no clue at this time. . ..

nor is this the only matrix ;)

Tehre is a lot mroe than just Descarte in there. I suggest you rent the matrix revisited, it spends a great deal of time talking about the philosophy in the movie.

Btw, Neo's more a Mosses than a Jesus, at least thats how I see it....

First link is Gnosticism influences on The Matrix. The Second is comparing and contrasting Neo to Christ. Hope this helps, I often find Killing the Buddha online zine informative. Third link is titled "If Buddhism had a Messiah".

Actually, i think there are 2 matrix's, they had to reprogram the second one 5 times so that everything would be ok, even if they had to destroy zion again.

[/hide]

Did anyone notice that the first matrix version seems suspiciously like heaven? I mean... the first matrix (1) before it had to be reprogrammed again everything was perfect and life was full of pleasures... sounds like heaven to me. (according to the bible)

I thought Mouse represented hedonism/temptation. He tried to get Neo to "meet" the Woman in Red. I read that somewhere.

That's the kind of thing I'm looking for! Thanks a lot Vanguard. :)

Keep 'em coming!

No. It was the Matrix they reloaded. You see, Neo functions both as the bug and the patch, for the Matrix. There is a theory that everything is a program (both Zion world and "real world"). The machines need to know exactly how a human work. The 1% of people that lived in Zion was the people who didn't "fit" in the Matrix (they obviously just couldn't live in the Matrix, because they could "feel" that the Matrix is false. That's why Zion was build, so that the people would think that they lived in the real cruel world).[/hide]

Heaven to us is to have everything, to do everything, to have unlimited time, and that there is no "do this, do that". Who knows, maybe Heaven is much more? Or something we never could've ever dream of?

Matrix has various philosophical themes.

Im not quite sure which one you wan't to work on...

Is it the more biblical/christian approach ?

C'mon Navaros, don't be that narrow-minded...

There are some parallels to messiah christ. Neo is never meant to be an allegory, there are only some allusions and parallelities.

And one will never succeed to put "The Matrix" in a whole fitting picture for one philosophical approach. So you can't just put the equation Neo=Christ...

But if anyone is interested in the parallels:

Neo is not supposed to be a Moses or Jesus allegory. Neo is a Superman allegory. There's nothing more to it than that.

He is both Jesus (because of resurrection and ascension) and a super-beeing (because NEO = ONE)

Neo could be Jesus but the certainty comes from the personal conviction of the individual. Although I disagree he is not Jesus he is only a "loose" charaterization of Jesus.

Agent Smith could be the demon "Legion"(IMO). All his actions now point to his being a demon mostly his "possesion" of other programs. Agent Smith is still a powerful character within the story more than is being told he is the "black crow" to Neo's "white crow".

Switch somehow repented(?) or something because she is the only one wearing white within the matrix. She wore black then white. Switch could be ying and yang still not sure about her.

Mouse is temptation (or lost soul or seeding) remember because of his lust for the "women in red" he lost focus which lead to his death.

Apoc is short for Apocalypse. All that can be said of Apoc is he is a silent male archtype. Apoc doesn't talk much during the movie I wonder what he would have told Trinity before Cypher pull his digital link.

Neo: neoV (neos) - 'new' [ Gr ]

"Neo is a Superman allegory"

Then do a little more than watch the thing. I don't like much in the way of films, but at least this one had some thought behind it.

Well, thanks for trying guys. :)

I have to write the essay now so it's bye bye to freedom for a bit. Feel free to use this thread to talk about the movies if you want to. Shall I start you off?

Who thought that the twins in "Reloaded" we so cool? And more importantly, did they survive that explosion? :O
