If the western bloc doesn't count, I'd say China- that country has about 1/4 of the current population I believe.

I will have to agree with you at one point China did have about 1/4 of the world.

it was the mongolian empire. It occupied almost entire asia (china, russia, vietnam, etc. eastern part of europe and part of the middle east. it was the largest empire ever

The largest empire in history is the capitalist might bloc inspired by the United States in the cold war. Simple.

What do you have against cpitalism? You prefer communism or something?

Posted

yup, we prefer communism,

Acturly the mongolian empire contaied the whole of europe, the westen part surrended when the fall of Hungary became known in the west, and became vassals to the khan(s)

Hungary survived attacks. Next 800 years. Mongols made only raids here, no invasion. They just had come, stole property and women, destroyed all villages in their way and departed back. It wasn't empire in right meaning. Khan wasn't feudalist, he was just primitive barbarian.

The mongolian Khans controlled the most land of any empire in history. They had the most land mass controlled of all time.

nonono. caid is right. the khan tried to invade europe but he suddenly died and all his troops turned and headed back home, they only raided but never conquered europe. and shortly after that the mongolian empire fell apart

They had the most land mass controlled of all time.

controlled?? No way, it was not under controll at all, the mongolians went from city to city and raged, killed and stol from the villagers. and if the soldiers didn't have any place to kill or steal, the army dissolved.

didn't acctually last for especially long either.

and if China has 1/4 of population, so had the british, and they had also larger land area under their controll.

and the roman, I doubt so, it was a great empire, but not the largest.

but it was probably the most advanced for it's time.

the question is a fascinating one. Though the mongols had a HUGE conquering area, to say they 'controlled' their land I think would be wrong. When we refer to an "empire" usually that implies some sort of control. Do you think the mongols really controlled their huge land mass?

Posted

The mongols were conquerers- but didn't have any experience in governing a large empire. When they had conquered china, they simply took over the confucianist system china had known for over a thousend years. This was during the Yuan dynasty, that btw lasted only for 200 years.

So they were excellent conquerers, but louzy rulers

perhaps not controlled, but the mongolian empire IS referred as the largest empire ever. they where like the huns, an unstoppable army of horse riders

any one who knows anything will know what I think....

*The Ottoman Empire*

During the reign of sully man the magnifienct (somwhare between 1541 and 1634)

The Ottoman empire was at its highest.

Controling all of the balkan states. They even seiged Vienna a couple times but it failed. They did conduct raids far into germany though!! The entire northern coastline of Africa. Yemen,Oman, and parts of sadi arabia. Deep into persia, and far into russian.

Speaking of which. here is a little ottoman poem i have memorised.

Ode to Sullyman.

Sullyman the magnificint sighned himself ruler of 37 kingdoms lord of...

The realms of the romans, and the persians, and the arabs. hero of all that is, Pride of the arena of Earth and time.

Of the mediterranean and the black sea.

Of the glorfied Kaaba and the illumied Medina, The noble Jerusalem, and the thrown of egpyt, Oh the rarity of that age;

Of the province of Yeman, Aden, and Sara, and of Baghad the abode of rectutude, A abara and al-haga, and the cities of nush irivan;

Of the lands of Algiers and azerbaijun, The stepds of kipchak and the lands of the tarters.

Of Kurdistan and laristanm and of the coutnries of romaina and ad antoila and Karana and Walachia and moldavia, and hungery, and of many more kingdoms and countries:

Sultan the padisha.

Ode to Sulleyman, barbarian lord...

Of those thousands of slaves, captured by their

brutal raids into civilian villages...

Of those scores of little children kidnapped from their

burned home and abused mothers and assimilated

to be warriors for Half-moon...

Of that smoking Buda, ruined Eszterghom, burning

Filakovo and crushed Nove Zamky...

Of Balkan peninsula, where they've done nothing

more than rage which is glowing even today...

"The sun never sets on the British Empire". Yes at its peak (around 1900) I agree that it was probably one of the largest and certainly the most widespread. The navy was bigger than any other countries and the army extremly disiplined.
