For those who don't know Spartan, TBS in Ancient Greece setting, there's a demo. Same for Rise of Nations, same for Galactic Civilizations. Spartan is strategically... special. One can see so well how the terrain/ressources/else can have an impact: how relations are important, short/long term growth, the effect of sea, mountains, islands, border configuration, of which neighbours you end up with, etc. :)

Well Age of Empires deserves its place. But I find it hard to choose because there are/were so many great games. Although I believe age of empires was better for it's time, I preferred age of empires 2 over the original.

Well, Gothic I and II are pretty much the same thing... it's like playing the same game.

And the Total War series... well, they treat different periods. But they are quite the same.
