I was rather hoping Ratzinger wouldn't become the new Pope, however he has.  Pope Benedict XVI at that.  I mean really the head of the Holy Office of the Inquisition....erm...Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.  Wasn't he a part of the Hitler Youth?

Hrmph... "After the great Pope John Paul II"... a not so great one.

I have to say I'm very dissapointed. Really, I don't mind a conservative Pope, but isn't this going a little far? He's the head of the (ex-)Inquisition for God's sake!

I suppose it's a good sign he didn't call himself Pope Pius... meh.

Somehow, when I look into his eyes, I don't see at all the same thing (love? kindness?) that was there in John Paul's eyes. I'm willing to suspend further judgement until I see what he does as Pope, though.

So anyone think he fulfills yet another prophecy by St. Malachy?  Many say the book is a forgery, but the last three see rather on target to me:

Perfect vote! Holy Spirit surely guided hands of the cardinals: a great man has been elected, a true servant of the Church and an insurance of its entrance to the cybernetic age. Long live Benedictus XVI!

Some of you John Paul II fanboys seem to forget that this man was a trustee of the last pope, and apparently good enough to take care of his funeral.

Oh, so he was the head of an office that centuries ago organised the inquisitions? And now he's the head of an office that caused the crusades (some of the bloodiest wars in human history) and extorted millions of medieval Europeans with their alleged monopoly on salvation...centuries ago.

Hey, if you're going to spite institutions because they committed evil in the past, you can at least try to be consistent.

My thoughts dwell more towards his time in the Hitler Youth.  However, as he did desert Nazi Germany's forces, I'm unsure as to think of that as conscience or cowardice.  All in all, I must suspend judgement until his first few months are over, see how he does as Pope.

yes, he is 78! I mean, wow, a MAN does avaragely get somewhere in the 80. And thats when all goes fine. What i am saying is that we will be seeing a new pope within 10 years. I personally think earlier. Its not that i wish him dead ;)

Well, when I recently clicked my Internet Explorer icon and it went to the MSN Homepage, there was Pope Benedictus XVI saying "The New Pope Has Arrived!"

It might just be me, but the page screamed 'EVIL!' out at me.

But I dunno.

Yeah duh MSN is evil. ;)

Uhh well whatever his conservative views, I'm not going to listen to them, unless I agree with them of course. :-

I love it how the media say things like "oh yeah he was the obvious choice, no real surprise" but they never mentioned him before!

I was also hoping it would nto be Ratzinger.

For a start, as Edric as mentioned, he does not seem much of a compassionate and benevolent leader of anything of the type John Paul II was. I think if he had come from South America, say, and was perhaps less of an insider of the Vatican, this would have been less of a problem. As it is, I doubt he'll be making so many visits and so forth. Perhaps he is an efficient and strict administrator, but if so, he was well placed to do that as a senior cardinal; if he devotes the same amount of time to administration as pope, he will simply not be doing the church's popularity much good.

As to his age, I think the Vatican should realise that in this age of medicine, choosing older popes will make it more likely that they'll spend a greater percentage of their time being infirm. It's not the case that older popes just stay for shorter perods and disappear. And if they were hoing for an interim papacy to contrast with the previous long reign with the intention that they could then contrast with Ratzinger and have a loss hardline pope next time... they may be disappointed.

Just because one man is good for a certain job doesn't mean his trustees are equally good. John Paul was an inspiring figure and a man of the people, while Benedict seems to be more of an ivory tower cogitor...

The old conservative European core of the Catholic Church is shrinking fast, Caid. The 3rd world already accounts for 2/3 of all Catholics; the Church is losing adherents in Europe and North America almost as fast as it is winning new converts in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Sooner or later, a Pope from the 3rd world will be elected - most likely one from Latin America, perhaps a supporter of liberation theology. And then we'll see who gets the last laugh...

Well he's supposed to be some tough church enforcer guy. They need this type of person to fend off gay people, abortions, condoms, and rock and roll. Really, the church doesn't need to change. Why did they stop castrating choir boys? They don't sound as good as they did way back when.

Also the death of a pope generates publicity. The church cant turn away free publicity to spread its religion.

He does look evil. :O

I saw that one on MSN as well, with the black background and the first thought that popped into my mind was something similar to a stillshot from the movie Omen 3 Final Conflict. But, maybe he'll be a great Pope. Who knows?

It is usual to elect an older cardinal after long pontificates. There is a large new generation of them, so if they took Ratzinger as the best choice, we must expect he will fulfill the new way. Also of you who read something from him, you already know he is a realist of very deep logic and perfect intelligence. No sign of backwardness as well - he was the first head of the inquisition seriously accusating some of its previous deeds. A blessed choice, what I have to say more...

I side with andrew.

I'm not religious, but since a lot of people still are 'following' this pope, i sure hope he will get some senses and atleast help to change people's minds about AIDS and the like. A pope who sais "it is good not to use condoms" especially THERE is imo nothing more then a murderer. Sorry to say that.

Its like saying to a 3 year old kid holding a knife, to stab himself, because its good for him.

well the dutch media did mention he=im but not as an obvious choice, still it would have been great to have a black pope but I think the curch is not ready for that (yet) sad really,

I hope this pope will let go some of his conservative believes, it is important to get the church into this centurie, if it is to survive.
