In Baltimore the local news always has stories about how people are killed in home invasions. I think I would shoot first and make sure I finished the job before calling the police. If I heard more stories like "house robbed, victims are not injured" I would possibly give the intruder that finds himself in my home a chance to live. Not likely though. I am more concerned about my families' safety than some low life who thinks he can take my stuff and will not hesitate to kill innocent home owners on a whim. That's what they are like around where I live anyway. Maybe in kinder gentler Canada criminals only want to steal your stuff and rarely take a life in the process.

See?  That's a major problem.  The homicide and crime rates are dropping drastically.  However, media coverage of homicides has increased $00% making the average person believe they are in mortal danger.

Don't beleive everythign you see on the news.  Beleive me when I say that they blow everything so much out of proportion that it isn't even always recognizable to the people involved.

This is the local news Mahdi. When they say people died in a home invasion I would hope that is not fabricated. I think the Baltmore police department might have something to say about that. As a matter of fact the crime rate in Baltimore is well tracked because of the large number of homicides. Believe me there is a lot of violent crime in Baltimore,MD.

An example :

A 15 year old boy recently appeared in a Coventry Crown court,he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to his friend,who is now paralyzed for life.

What he did was he stole a car and his friend was a passenger,he asked the court to take into account 95 ! previous offences.

He was sentenced to 12 months juvenille prison.

12 months for ruining someones life ! my god !

It seems the law in the UK is an ass.

If you kill someone you get 5 years Max

If you break in somewhere you get maybe 12 months,or if at all.

If you rob a bank, you get 15 years

So life seems to be a very cheap commodity,money seems to be the all important factor in our justice system,if that's what people can call it. >:(

Like some already said, the law in The Netherlands is a joke. You're not allowed to have any weapon in possesion.

However, no matter what laws apply, if someone would break in my home, he'd better be ready for some beating. No matter who the person is (short, tall, wide ;)), I'll whoop his a$$ out of my house as hard as I can (I do have a baseball bat ready).

You're not allowed to have a baseball bat even. Fortunately, my wife plays baseball (or softball I should say), which means I can have one in my home ;)

Chances are though, that if I would beat up someone who broke into my home, I get send off to jail, while that person may walk freely again. A friend of mine has worked as a policeman and he has said that if it would occur that someone would break in and I would injur that person, provide the person a weapon (like a club) after you've knocked him down and tied him/her up (obviously). That way you're always able to say it was self defence. As answer to my question that it would be his word against mine, my friend said that the police will always take the word of the house owner :)

In response to nampigmai and other in here who say that peopel shouldnt be allowed guns..... or that... "they will kick the intruder's ass"

think about this for a minute.... i have a few friends who are small and skinny and are shrimps...

if someone broke into their house they would get their asses kicked.  These types of people need to have guns.  It is not right to tell a small skinny man that he has to fight a burglar hand to hand .... or with a knife or something.....

weak people should be able to own guns so that it is a level playing field.  Saying that you must  protect your house WITHOUT guns is saying that only big strong people deserve to protect themselves.

It dosnt Matter if your skinny or not if you know what your doing you can take down someone twice your size. I faught a 22 year old and whoped his ass, I'm like a squirl duck and weve he only landed 1 punch on me, even though i dont throw nock out punchs a few and your pretty messed up, the assumption that someone who is skinny cant fight is wrong. (he walked away with a bloody nose messed up eye and busted lip, he showed me his conferderate tatto on his leg and said the south will rise again...i reminded him that the south lost the war he wanted to fight after that, mistake for him  ;D)

Define weak person? How does a cort define a weak person? is there a test? if you cant bench 210 your weak or something, thats the most stupid thing I ever heard. Strength has nothing to do with self defense, not to mention like Doc said A baseball bat, Sword, dagger, knife is alot better then a gun. With a gun there is a high chance that you will kill that person, With a bat sword,dagger,or knife not as much. Not to mention guns misfire bladed weapons. Only despret men use guns, cowards use guns. If you have a gun the first thing you will do is run to it. Its a human responce get the strongest thing you have and use it.

Everyone can defend themselves. Single women? I'm not sure what you're trying to imply but women do not need a man to protect them.

And guns? Why do people keep having to come back to guns? Guns are boring! There are specific laws against guns. Are there any specific laws against boiling oil? Snake pits? Evil axes that swing from the ceiling? Nooooo..... And of course like Ex said there are knives, daggers, swords, maces, frying pans... My personal favourite, the trident... All these far more interesting forms of weaponry and have less chance of killing and more chance of causing physical pain... Better on all counts.

A knife hell yea i would take that guy on with a butcher knife or a dagger. IF you get stabbed in the gut you are going to back off, do you know much pain comes in a stabbing? its not like a gun shot boom its over. The blade goes in, your guts collapse into the holes in the knife the serated edge ripes open your internal organs to peices and its slow its not A BAM with a gun. If i stabbed him he would be engulfed in a sea of pain. A gun shot would do that butthe pain his less intense then being stabbed violently.(depending on the caliber)

He would be stopped cold if he can take a knife to the gut and keep coming he aint human.

Same thing witha gun but there is enough damge with a gun to kill you, you can fix a knife wound better then a gun shot, a gun shot has a entree and a exit wound. You will bleed to death alot more with a gunshot then a blade. A blade is just as effective and less lethal.

so if you get killed and your girlfriend who has never fired a gun before can either struggle with the gun lock, load it, arm it, and fire it with acuracy right? Blades are better becouse they are simplier and less deadly.

Exatreides is right...who is to define a "weak person" . How is that to be determined who is "weak enough" to have a firearm.

And a fight can always be equalized....even if you do get into a conflict with a person twice your size and he as a weapon, than you go get your weapon that is the same or equal to theres...

And if you are getting robbed at 3 in the morning the last thing you are going to think about is where you are going to shoot them. You will just get your gun and shoot, its human nature to protect yourself. Not "hmmm where should I shoot him so he dosent die but yet he is put down..". Highly unlikely and even if you do, while your thinking of this he is either A on your ass and your finished or B grabbed some shit and ran off already.

When someone breaks into your home they are either usually high on drugs,or suffering withdrawal symtoms,or high on adrenalin.

True Khan, but you're more likely to kill somebody with a Desert Eagle then with a lighter handgun. Wich is why it wouldn't be reasonable to posses such guns.

It's comparatively difficult to get licence for a gun in the Netherlands, but I think we're better off this way then in a situation where just about everyone can get one.
