Well it is normal for a planet to have colder areas around the poles, therefore ice caps form, as it is the case on Dune. As the planet was desertified the ice caps shrunk but did not dissapear. Water is still present but not abundant. The polar caps are used for ice mining and just about that I guess... It would be interesting to have some missions there, but I guess that was never implemented. In the books only briefly they are mentioned, as geological info and as political and economical significance (water dealers and ice miners were quite powerful). Other than that, no...

Maybe the polar caps are small compared to the size of the planet as polar cap / planet size % compared to other planets. Mining the polar caps wouldn't deplete them so fast as a lot of water is imported via Guild and also produced locally (remember the dew gatherers). Also the fremen have their windtraps.

There is vegetation and animals on Dune, just not so abundant as on Earth. In the books there is a whole list of plants and animals that inhabit the planet, it's just that most of the planet is covered in sand and dust. Also the dryness makes any attempt at agriculture futile because the water will evaporeate very fast and not feed the crops. So basically any area with rocks should have some desert plants with it. I guess that both Cryo and Westwood wanted to make the world as alien as possible and enhance the "mineral" feeling to it.

Aaaa, the name? Beats me.

Well, for starters, he's the owner of the forums ;) nostalgically attached to this small community.

Oh come on, don't get all mushy :D I joined the forums in its prime, when new sections were still being created. I might brag that my petition changed the name of "Politics and religion" to "Politics, religion and PHILOSOPHY" and that my "Joke" thread is one of the longest here. Of course it's sad it's not so visited aymore but I'm sure the hype will be back along with the next official Dune game, no matter how far in time that might be. My only regret... and THEY know it... is that i joined too late to know... WHAT THE DAMN GOLDFISH WAS!!! (don't ask about the goldfish... they're sworn to secrecy... it's been 11 years for me and I still don't know).

All hail Gob :D

Hmmm, it seems it's not working for me either. :( Hopefully one of the moderators will notice this and try to fix it. There's still tons of cools tuff buried in these forums :)

Well during holidays it's usually quieter... It's normal. I'll try to be sa bit more active with scouting for Dune artwork around the web. Every now and then there's some new guy coming out with a bunch of really cool stuff :)

Well, I am in a similar situation and have been on hiatus on my mod for about one year. I hope I'll get to continue it soon. Reality tends to get in the way. So, I say that you continue what you're doing, but don't stress over it. Do it for yourself, and it should be good :)

the site and forum seems to have been experiencing some problems in the last period. for me random links didn't work at one time and i couldn't browse around abut now it's all working fine.

well, watch the Hungover series and they're pretty much the same. funny but the same, so as long as you don't do a marathon you won't notice it so bad.

In uni we had to do some urban texture maps (totally retarded) but some guy made them out of sweets so we could eat them after the teachers were done assessing them. Anyway, great idea :D

Oh God, are they still spitting out books? I couldn't make myself get near any non FH books. Are there any that do not totally blow up the canon version?
-
I think the connection between Dune's Fremen and the Cossaks is pretty strong, not only the name of the settlement: Sietch - Sich but also how they functioned as societies, heavily militarized, somewhat mobile... I have always been amused by FH's use of the word Wallach for the Bene Gesserit's planet, as it is related to Wallachia (southern Romania) and the overall foreign denomination of romanians: wallachs / vlach. Bene Gesserit as a name sounds like it could be a jewish congregation, though in the later books, FH reveals jews to still exist as ethnicity, but unconnected with the Bene Gesserit. As for the name Leto it might have gotten picked up straight from greek mythology as the house Atreides is said to have had direct lineage to ancient kind Atreus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leto

That and being hunted. I guess people need to feel a bit menaced to feel united. I mean, it would hardly matter religion and political views in case of a zombie outbreak. AFTER that though, when society calms down... I really find the zombie movies a bit childish. Like a growling, slow (not always), smelling thing can "sneak up" on you in plain sight and bite. This keeps happening in all zombie movies and it's not really realistic. Plus people having personal problems overshadow the catastrophy they're living.

I was a bit excited about the prospect of Scottland becoming independent. Now, of course it was not going to be a smooth road after that if it happened. The EU backed London on it and had that "you can't" discourse Dante was talking about because there's s much seccesionism on the continent fueled by the austerity measures that it could've sent a tidal wave of splits. Especially dangerous because the whole Ukraine thing. I mean a new country wouldn't automatically be admitted in the EU if it split from an EU-member, because beaurocracy and because the new politicians and Gvt. must proove they can handle the whole thing now that they're independant from the former policy-maker. Though I guess it would be a faster and less bumpy road than for other countries. Also I read that the independence movement relied not only on the oil fields but also on the naval shipyards. By law, UK's war fleet is only to be serviced by UK based shipyards, so the idea that Scottland would cash in on maintenance and building for UK navy (as i read in the news) would not work. Even the oil is tricky because the Shetlands threat to split from Scottland if Scottland splits from the UK. So the whole matter needs to be pondered better. If the economics are discussed the first time during the damn referendum it's normal that people would go with the safe ride. The prospect of no oil, no shipyard contracts, import/export tax with the EU untill accession and minting your own coin in the meantime is not a great future to look up to. Again, that is what I was reading on the news. I mean these things need to be discussed and a whole strategy must be put in place for after independence. Plus people have to recognize you. Then you must open embassies (damn expensive) get your own army and stuff... I have sporadically followed the Catalan struggle but also I don't know if there was such a debate also. Also there are growls of discontent in southern Germany, as being the richest stated in the federation, not really happy about paying so much money to support the rest of Germany. Also north Italian seccesionism based on the same economic factor. Maybe Dante can tell us more about the atmosphere during the referendum. :)

Long time, no see... The main page for me is totally stuck. I had to type in the forums address manually. As for new stuff for Dune games, I am really ashamed for pausing my MOD development since last year. I relocated and I am to relocate again. Really not much time for that. But still, I am happy to see people are still lurking around here :) edit --- ok, main page is all right, but cannot access forum.dune2k.com somehow i can acces other parts of the forum but the main page of the forum is unavailable. wtf?

you go up the page where your name is and click it, it will open a small menu. and there you have all the settings.

I can't possibly know what you're going through, but you have to stay tough. All this stuff going on now is too much for one person to handle. There's unrest from Tunisia to Turkey. Just the most solid dictatorships endured actually, though I don't know if I should put Jordan there. What can I say? If religion helps you, then why not? I am not a religious man, but I know anyone needs some solid ground for their minds in times like these.

Not sure Cubans made it work. Most people that talked to ordinary cubans said the people complained about the lack of opportunities and that the state would dictate your proffession despite whichever training you got. Studied physics? So what, we need bartenders. You're assigned that job. Not such fun actually. North Korea is f*cked up... i wouldn't know where to begin.
