shurikens are what they are called and they do hardly any damage mild lacerations at best. they were used to cut and lacerate the skin on a pursuing gaurd to make them thinl twice before following you.

Er... chain mail stopping arrows?

"From the point of view of an arrow, chain mail can be considered to be a set of loosely connecte holes."

The rings are linked up in a special way. From what I've heard, when an arrow hits a chain mail, it would create a "chain reaction", which pulls surrounding rings to the point of impact, stopping the arrow.

Exactly. Wheras with plate mail it just punches a hole through. My mother used to do archery, one of her practices was to see how many oil drums (empty, duh) she could get an arrow though. The fact that getting through one is even possible shows an arrow's power.

Crossbows still better though. Even if they are slower.

So long as the arrow hits at a narrow enough angle it can be deflected yes. But what kind of armour is all pointy at the front? If anything it's a mere dent.

I think this topic is dying now so I'll just leave it to shrink into the mists...

Wow, this post is great fun!

Hrmm...Though I like (and own) several of these suggestions (doublehead-axe, rapier, broadsword, shortsword, sabre and cutlass...among others).  I personally think I'm more of a pikeman.  More flexibility and finesse than axe, more area than a sword, more powerful than knives etc. even against cavalry.

I really like the Japanese Pike, though I can't remember the name for it right now.  It's kinda curved, about the same length as the wakizashi (blade) but with a much longer handle.  Overbalancing would be a problem, but no more than with many other blades.

  Oh yeah, and *bump*! ;)

Ahh, we're back. Time to reiterate my desire for a trident. A three-tined trident, made from steel, with edges on the prongs as well as points, that's just taller than I am...

Not asking for much...

Used to play a game on the old Ameiga (Ameiga? Amiega? Amega? Amiga? I forget...) called 'Desert Strike.' You played a helicopter and those one thing my sister and I loathed about that game were the rapiers. Damn things destroyed us nearly every time...

Well if we're back...the Katana still, with modern materials that are lightweight metals/polymers.  My choice for a longer sword.

Short sword...the wakizashi.  It has good balance, and a decent weight.  That's important when you worry about your arm tiring.

Knife...I'd probably go with the Indonesian Kriss.  It can be devestating if properly used with some of the fighting styles from the Jakarta area, like Pentjak Silat.
