It depends on the job, of course. Some jobs take up much more time than others. Place personal commitments on top of that.

I've got a job, and I'm at university.  I'm currently sat in the library, trying to write an essay on something really dull, but I'm not getting very far.

This whole truth thing is matter of lacking clarity. Alchemi means that the victor get's to change what people think the past it, not change what the past actually was. In doing so, he can make his future victories more likely, which will allow him to continue controlling the recording of history. It is not the actual past that gives him the future, but the recording of the past. The saying is silly in a way though that controlling such records does not neccessarily give you such strong influence and power over the future. Sometimes it doesn't even matter. The idea is there though.

You know, very often when we discuss something (I'm usually lurking when it comes to philosophy though), a quote on the very subject from Frank Herbert comes to my mind, but I'm usually too lazy to find the exact text, and moreover post it, fearing that it'd sound banal :)
