Competition for Dune2k? - thesietch.com

Yeah. We should get that done quickly, because you can be pretty sure that someone's watching these forums to steal our ideas. Also, "If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then litigation is the sincerest form of 'Thank-you'." :)

I was going to make a topic for this... decided it wasn't necessary.

My opinion? Well, my first instinct is to reject this site as an upstart wannabe. However, I recognise that there are many other Dune sites out there and that because of this the books are reaching a large number of people. Fed2k may be one of the best Dune sites around, but we do not have a manifest right to a monopoly. This does not mean to say that we can't do our very utmost to blow the competition out of the water.

I don't remember this website from before. It was active back in 2003? Then disappeared and reappeared now?

I think they missed the "Dune" peak. (Ok, I read the reasons in the FAQ now)

FAQ

The Naib doesn't like the prequels then?

To each their own, but although the Naib thought the House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Corrino series marginally acceptable, as for the rest, he's not a fan. He stopped reading the prequels after choking on the first chapters of "The Machine Crusade".

And no, it's not a case of casting the first stone, he speaks with some experience in writing; he's presently doing a Master of Arts degree in Creative Writing, and has written a Sci Fi novel.

I like him already! :)

Who wants to criticize him first because he's "bashing" the prequels and has a grudge against BH + KJA? :P ;)

I would think it would be hard to get a lot of attention with the current state of affairs relating to Dune stuff.

Well this site is a little different then most Dune sites in that our main focus has always been the video games rather then the novels and whatnot. And seeing as how this site isn't exactly a revenue source competition is not that big of a deal. The site will be around as long as I can keep paying the hosting bills which is made much easier by the donations. :)

As for the Wiki, Timenn and Nema are working on setting that up right now. And I've been messing around with a new layout too.

Should I make an account over there and just go say hi from all of us? Seems like the proper thing to do, if we want to be friends. Besides, the webmaster(Or Naib, as he calls himself), seems like an alright fellow,, and his humour isn't bad either. I doubt he's seeking to try to usurp our title as Best Dune Fansite - EVAR. ;) Just joking, in case you read this, Naib of the Sietch!

Let us know how the Wiki is getting on.

We are doing more structural work right now so that when we do have it ready people won't be confused as to where pages would go and what to post where. Hopefully sometime this week it will be up and running.

Layout for Fed2k main page, forum, or the wiki?

The new layout would be for the entire site, although I'm not 100% sure about the wiki templates yet.

You can go and create an account and mention that you post here, but I don't think you could speak for everyone here. :)

Well he pays Google to show his ads, at least I assume thats how it works.

And no I have never advertised, the site for me was more about making a good site then having a lot of people visit... plus I was a teenager back then and didn't have any money. :D

But now you do and still refuse to purchase me my hat.

Perhaps we (by which I mean Gob) might consider adding them to Fed2k's "Friends", alongside TibEd, duneinfo.com and thedune.ru. It looks well enough established - and it seems like tha owner is prepared enough to maintain it - that it makes sense to.

Plus, if we can support a books-related site to compete with Moritani's Landsraad, then all will be well.

I've been too busy with the new layout work to update any of the current site unfortunately. Once I have that done I will be adding them and a few others.

compete with Moritani's Landsraad

That wouldn't be too hard... seems inactive lately. And also the fact that Gob doesn't ban people for correcting him if he were to cite a source repeatedly wrong. Or go on banning sprees... ;)

There's nothing wrong with new Dune websites popping up, especially when the quality of them are good.

I don't actually care about any other pages... I got all I want righ here and I hope it stays like this for quite some time :)
