For those who haven't heard of this movie *cough*Americans*coughcough*, it's a German made film describing the last days of Hitler in his bunker. What makes it controversial is that it shows the human side of Hitler, instead of portraying one sidedly like an evil mad man. Wich upset a great deal of people for some vague reason.

Anybody else planning on seeing this movie? It sounds interesting to me, and I'd pay to watch something this controversial.

I thought such films are not allowed to be made in Germany. You know World War 2 and all...

It does sound interesting, and I do like the idea of Hitler as a 3D person is quite intiguing.

Oh yeah Hitler was actually quite the joker at times. :P

Yeah Germans are a little touchy about that kind of stuff. You know, they regret the past and all, but at the same time they still want to take over the world. ::)

It was a great movie. Not quite a classic type of Das Boot, Face in the Morning Rain or Wolf Holes, but surely one of the best WW2-based. What is controversial on it I'm not sure of, but I recommend this to everyone. You don't have a better psycho about Hitler.

Everyone has a 'human' side, though it depends on your opinion as to what exactly this constitutes. Hitler, for example, was kind to animals, was said to enjoy the company of English women, liked holidays and had a sweet tooth.

It's somewhat ironic that some people who would claim to more civilised and enlightened that Hitler was would condemn him out of hand as being an inhuman monster. Of course I'm not saying that being partial to chocolate cake somehow means that gas chambers are excusable, but it does add an element to the man that most people are unwilling to consider. I personally may or may not go to see the film, chances are it won't be screened here. *Sigh*

Guess what was one of the most important sources of Hitler's 'normal', social speech? His visit in Finland, of course. ;)

Ahem. The movie's coming here early next year, January probably. I'll go watch it, though there are some problems with my mother. Father, as an eager historian is probably coming with me but my mother was like "I don't want my son to become a nazi."

My first reaction: W-T-F? It's a frigging (documentary) movie! My mother doesn't like at all my and mine father's obsession with Nazi-Germany, and esspecially its military... Shrugs. Maybe she believes I am a nazi.  :-

... But I'm going to go watch the movie anyway.

Why wouldn't Hitler have a human side? Come to think of it, what would the other side be then? You only have to take a glance in a newspaper to see the disgusting things humans are can do, and do so very often. Why is that not "human"?

Hitler killed millions, but at the same time he was also polite and friendly to those who knew him, and had emotions like anybody else. It's good that we finally have a movie that doesn't reduce Hitler to an emotionless robot.

downloading the movie now, since that is the only way I can have a chance to see it.

Of course Hitler had a human side as well. I do not think he only thought evil thoughts when he for example was together with relatives or people he knew.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for that man, he was one of the most cruel persons ever to wander this earth, and to be honest weather he liked candy, british women and animals doesn't make him any better.

all this he was good deep inside crap gives me the creeps.

I really don't like this "making Hitler look nice" thing, like I said how he was with his friends doesn't matter, the fact that millions died bacause of his regime does!

its not about making him LOOK nice its a more realalistic way of portraying him

Bush also send people to its dead and Bin-laden but they are stil human

that's the scary part the a human being can do such a thing

Bulgar khan Krum had no problem to drink from the skull of his fallen opponent and there was no movie about his "human part" yet too. I would say yes, there are many people able to do so, and yet remain humans.

Making Hitler look nice isn't really the objective. The objective is to display a side of the man that is often overlooked. I mean, what kind of person who aspires to make balanced decisions could say "No, I won't watch that, it'll disagree with my decision." ?

I don't think anyone says Hitler was good deep inside. Some say he was right, but they don't tend to use the word good except to say 'good for the country,' or 'good for the world,' or some such. Some say he was insane, some say he was evil, some say he was stupid... But no matter what you believe, you should never believe that he was just a one-dimensional character. Nobody is one-dimensional.

It's not about making Hitler look nice, it's about making the character look credible. Perish the thought, but suppose if you have to watch a 2 hour movie in wich Hitler constantly says things like "and then, I'll destroy the Russians with my incredible uberweapons, and then I shall exterminate every single one of them! Bwahahahaha!"

actually you are allowed to make such movies as long as they are for the use of giving information about history and are used for some kind of "education".

not allowed is: any media which favors all this stuff. this would also include games like return to castle wolfenstein... though nazis aren't the good guys but you aren't allowed to show the nazi symbols - unless like in the movie it's part of an "education"... don't ask me about the detailed definition of the laws but roughly it's like I wrote...

well for me I think it is time to move on we can't keep blaming the germans for wat happend. This generation is notto blame and most of the people who where alive then are dead now.

60 years and if the germans can't make such a movie who can?

Well, Americans are still trying to find the guilties of 'war crimes' from German... So some just can't forget. Sigh.

It was an excellent movie. Like Caid I don't really see what sparked all the controversy. I can't check everything for accuracy but it's obvious they put a lot of effort in reconstucting what it must have been like in the bunker the last few days. Recommend it to everyone.
