the Passion of the Christ

This film is perfect the way it is. Listen, this is the point of film, you take the aim of the story and show it. Gibson didnt want to show the life of christ or his works before the crucifixion. He just showed the crucifixion, as it is one of the most important parts of his life besides the resurrection. THis is the whole point of the film, to show how horrible it was, and how much love christ had for humanity. It isindeed violent, but as the old testament says, people would turn away from his visage. This is what people did at the film. It showed it how it was, and if people dont want to see it for what it was for anybody that was put on the cross, then they shouldnt watch.

there were many critics that loved it. It is showing what it was like to be tortured and crucified. This isnt an overdone thing, it could be this bad, worse at times. People just dont like to see these sides of history.

It cracks me up that there are many film critics that will love a scorsese film like taxi driver and things of the such that are so violent and at times have no meaning, and love them. THen when they see this film they hate it. a double standard I think.

(By the way I love Taxi Driver, and many of scorsese's films.)

I had tried to post a thread about this a couple of days ago but due to computer difficulites I was not able to post the thread.

Navaros the point of the 2 hr 15 movie was not to show his entire life but the last 12 hours of Jesus' life.

I have read some of the same reviews that you posted and frankly some of the critics just did not watch the movie.

There is nothing in the movie to found to be "pornographic" that is absurd. Do reasearch on cruxifictions in ancient times and then let people know if these "acts of punshiment" were bloodless.

Mr Rosenbaum looks like some bloodthirsty deviant now  ;D

I can't wait until it will be here in Slovakia. That's a movie worth more than a few hours downloading on dc++. We can't erase history. Humans are brutal, bloody, destructive and violent. But the fact we can declare this makes us humans. Pink eyeglasses are what makes the most of american movie production worthless. If they would make a movie about even the bloodiest event which ever occured, they would show breaking of some love pact as greater tragedy. See ie cinematized Last of Mohawks, whole indian tribe and english army in a castle are slaughtered just because two people wanted to survive. And when hero's brother dies, it is made as greatest tragedy. This is bloody and violent. Plain hypocrisy.

Well I just went and saw it today.....And I am at a loss for words, it was a very powerful movie. Moviewise it was very good, but I did not enjoy it. I do not cry over movies or about anything at all but this movie got it out of me. It was very sad and I could not repress it.

As I left the theater I really could not speak about it, I couldent find the words. The funny thing is, I am not a religious person at all and yet it struck me very hard. Well it was something that I had to see and now that I have I settled my craving.

One review I read thought that it was quite amusingly ironic that violence-hungry average cinematic audiences and reviewers were put off by the violence; while churchgoing christians were flocking to see it.

Well I for one am not surprised.

Did you find the amount of gore in it necessary? I heard that there was a lot of gore in it, some finding it too much.

There was alot of gore and when I say alot I mean alot. At one point in the movie they are whipping him with this leather whip thingy and at the end are like razors. They whip him and it gets stuck in his skin and they yank it out and it rips off a good chunk of skin on his side revealing his rib cage. I really dont think they needed to put that much gore in it. On the otherhand all the gore really made it stick to you about how terrible it was. I really dident have a good idea how bad it was until I saw this movie.

What would Jesus think about people ripping off his movie?

My roomate saw it and said that she would never watch it again. Too much gore. That is why I will not watch it becuase I would only end up getting sick.

I wonder if religious people will use it like other god/jesus/moses movies to try to convert as many people as possible to their religion. Is that the meaning of christianity? to get as mnay people as possible to convert? That is not what I have learned, but it seems that way. (sorry for the PRP part ;))

Hi all, I actually came to find a resolution to my problem w/ D2k on XP, but I saw this thread and had to reply...

I'm a Christian and I love the movie.  I'm very sorry that it offends some people.  I'm not sure why exactly they are offended.  They chose to go see the movie and most knew in advance that it was graphic.  Plus as has already been said, there have been many movies that are just as graphic if not more so.

One that comes to mind right away is "Hannibal."  There were very graphic scenes in that movie.  One poor fellow was hung w/ his stomach cut open and his intestines fell out and in another scene Hannibal very explicity removes a persons top-skull and exposes his brain so he could cut a piece off, cook it, and serve it to the victim.  Hmm....  That's about as graphic as it can get; to not only be killing your victim, but to also have him eat a part of his own flesh.  :-  But that was just a movie right?  Well if you don't believe in Jesus as a Christian does, then this is just a movie also right?

I think the underlying reason of peoples disgust is that it is the TRUTH.  What happened was real.  His suffering was real.  His cause was real.  Maybe that's why it bothers some people.  Maybe there is a part of them that feels compelled to care about what this person went through.

There was a very interesting part in the movie where Pontious Pilate was asking his wife what is truth, and to help him see the truth.  The only answer she could give was to say that she's sorry, because if he can't or won't see the truth, then there is no one that can show him.

I'm not one of those Christian that is going to throw a Bible at you and judge you, for I too have sinned.  I would love to see everone become my Brothers and Sisters in Christ, but it's not because I think anyone else is wrong and I'm right.  I simply BELIEVE in Him and His Word and because it's only a good thing, I would like to share it w/ others.  God is a perfect Gentleman to me, he won't force anyone to love him and serve him and of course if he won't then I won't; But if the movie in some way touches your soul and you want to know him, then let me know.  I'm only learning myself, but I'd be more than happy to share what I know.

Once again though, for those of you that have been offended, I apologize and I assure you that is not the intention nor message of the movie.  It is only meant for us to see what He endured for us and give us the option to either believe or not to believe.  What a coincidence it is that our whole life is about choices and each choice we make can be broken down into two types: For our good or not for our good.

No matter what anyone chooses, I nor any other Christian is any better.  We only choose different.  Love and God Bless to all.

Isaiah said that christ would look so disfigured that we would turn away. History shows that many crucifixions were horribly bloody. it is the truth.

well there are some famous people of history that were killed on the cross, but frankly their whole life didnt pivot on a world religion that bases a savior on a cross. ::) duh acriku.lol

You may worship me.

When do you think they will come out with Noahs ark or the ten commandments again?

Or maybe a short film about the Old Testament?  ;D

If Mel payed for the entire movie to be made (with some supporters), does this mean he will get almost all the profits?

I had a friend who saw it over the weekend, and found it hilarious. The climatic dropping of the tear he said was so tense that it was laugh-out-loud-over-dramatic. But, he said that the monster under the bridge scared the crap out of him, and the demon children freaked him out. Not a bad review ;)

I saw this movie the Friday after it came out.  I got 2 free tickets from a friend's mom (she said she found them at a hospital waiting room with a note saying to take them).  I showed up for the movie, and it turns out it's a private screening for a church.  Ok....well, I'm not a Christian so this could be awkward if I'm not careful (I went alone).  I end up talking to some nice lady in line for the theater who asks me if I go to church.  I say no, and she tells me I should go to her church because it is "awesome" and that MC Hammer is coming to their church (no joke).  I smile and say "neat".  Anyway, at the end of the movie this minister guy stands up, has everyone close their eyes, and starts asking people to raise their hands if they've accepted Jesus into their hearts or not.  Then goes into your typical speech about Jesus suffering for you and stuff.

Anyway, that being said, I didn't get much from this movie.  It wasn't a "bad" movie or a poorly done film.  I think part of the problem may have been that I am not a Christian.  I was thinking maybe this movie would give me some kind of angle on Christ that I could relate to as a non-Christian.  Well, I did'nt get that.  Which is fine, we can't always get what we demand from something.  But I want to comment on the violence in this movie.  I've seen people saying things like "if this were any other action movie, you wouldn't be as bothered by it".  No....this movie was fucking bloody as hell.  I'm sorry, but it just plain was.  From the moment he's captured (first scene in the film), Jesus is literally almost constantly being beaten to a bloody pulp.  They let you see (and hear) everything too.  By the end of the film, Jesus is barely coherent and literally every inch of his body is oozing blood.

There were some things I did like about the film though.  The music was good, and I loved that they actually had it in the right language.  I've seen other movies that supposedly take place in this time period, and I'm sorry, but I just have a hard time getting into it when the people are walking around speaking english and practically have British accents.  This film's entire dialogue is in Aramaic and Latin with subtitles and I must say that it really adds more to the sense of what time-period you're watching.

I think that the main intent of this film was to really drive-home the fact that Jesus suffered and died to save all humanity.  An idea that I just don't relate to--being a non-christian.  If I had to give it a rating out of 5 stars I'd probably give it like....3.75.

I bet it was bloody, but doesnt anybody here understand that going on the cross is a bloody matter??? lol I mean if you actually study how it was done (not much info on it, but there is some), you will find that they usually went through a lot of torturing before the hanging. Not always but there were many times when this did happen. Not everybody was nailed either, and those that didnt could stay up there for days. Not because of bleeding or anything, but because the body when hung by nails reacts differently because of the place where they nailed a person to a cross.

anyways of course it is bloody. I just dont understand why people expect it any other way. I love how ebert see's it. People always wanted a jesus that was realistic towards the truth of the matter, now that they have something that is really really truthful, they dont like it at all. They wanted to see a jesus that was close to historical (there are many historical innacurracies in the passion, not saying it is perfect) and realistic towards the cross, but then when people get it they dislike it. I dont understand.

I'm not meaning to sound confrontational, but I never said it shouldn't have been bloody.  I just wanted people to stop trying to pretend that it wasn't that bloody or violent.  It is.  I realize that it was probably accurate and that they probably really did those things to people (or worse).  I'm just saying that I personally didn't care to see as much as I saw.  I'm not arguing the accuracy of the violence or the necessity of it.  I'm simply saying I didn't care for it.  Am I not entitled to that???
