Every so often something happens here which I cannot explain. Today while browsing FED2K a popup (surprisingly) popped up asking me whether I wanted to join an online casino. Assuming it was a rogue, random virus, I disconnected and then clicked *no* as there was no cross in the top right hand corner. Then, I discover new shortcuts on my desktop! They ranged from MP3 downloads and travel booking to... adult. I didn't even want to go there. So I deleted them, found their cookies and stored stuff and deleted that too, and put it down to a random occurance.

But just now, while posting in Fanfiction, it takes me to a page saying "The page you requested cannot be found" and then went on to offer me links to (among others) porn sites! I got out of there as soon as possible but I'm worried that something might have happened, as this has never ever occured before, especially not in the same day...

You might want to scan your system for a virus. Also check what programs are being launched during startup. You can check this with the Msconfig.exe application. I am guessing you went to some other page that installed software without your knowledge. It happened to me once. I found that not only had the page installed software without my consent (with shortcuts on the desktop), but put the damn thing in the registry startup section. Needless to say I never visit that site again. I doubt that this site is responsible for your problem since I have never had a problem here.

Did you visit any porn sites recently?THose porn sites MIGHT cause these problems.

Don't be afraid. We won't laugh at you for that.I am sure at least a handful of FED2K members do that too.

We all know you hang out in such places Lowzeewee ::). Please stay on topic for once. This problem can occur on legit sites too. Please don't respond unless you have some real input to the problem.

Ive had a virus that kept bringing up the casino add, it must becoming quite infamous by now.. I didnt get anything on the desktop, but i got those shortcuts, hell they are still there, i actually thought they came with Explorer LOL been there for so long...

I would check for adware from recently installed programs. I always had one from Bearshare called Savenow! that would pup up very seldom while you were browsing to make it look like it came fromt the site you were visiting. If you don't have Ad-aware already, I'd reccomend downloading it. It's great at finding this stuff.

some websites sometimes silently download software on your computer. How they do it, is beyond me, but they download it to the startup procedure of your computer so that it can spill out ads when you're online.

I won't dignify that with an answer... :P

I've deleted everything I thought was necessary, and it hasn't happened again... yet. The only sites I've been visiting recently are this one and Nationstates.

My niece has recently had the same problem. It seems to be something linked to something else coming with KaZaA lately.

One of the softwares that sponosrs KaZaA opens a backdoor to make popup appear at random intervals, and to make it seem like it's coming from a website you are looking at... except that some websites don't have popups...

It seems that this backdoor may be being used to download and install other spywares without your consent.

Mind you that I have no proof of all this, but we do know that what ever it was came with KaZaA as she has only had the problems since last week when she installed it. Before that, no spyware.

For the tech mindd on this board, our little goodie seems to be broadcasting through/as ntoskernel and ad-aware was unable to find it.

1) I didn't know if it could be fixed, but now it would be better off in Tech support.

2) It just happened again! I clicked 'reply' and it took me somewhere completely different! I'm getting very tired of seeing the word 'hardcore'... >:(

this is what happens when people are frivolous about installing any-old spyware-laden programs on their computer without caring, and thinking that anti-spyware programs are a "Cure-All". anti-spwyare programs are NOT a Cure-All

btw you can report the issue to Ad-Aware and if their latest Ref-File doesn't have this spyware included, the next one probably will. they are really open to suggestions from the public, although they are not a fix for end-user stupidity

I would think it is something like Kazaa, so try to get kazaa light as it has no spyware.

I had a problem with kazaa and its spyware but I got rid of it all.

i don't know about "kazaa light" but if that's by the makers of kazaa i am sure it has spyware

however, "kazaalite' has no spyware. it's a cracked version of Kazaa which is not made by the makers of Kazaa. basically, they just took the spyware out of Kazaa for the benefit of all mankind. everyone should use kazaalite. kazaa is evil.

KaZaA is crap :P I think everyone should get temp jobs and just buy the damn songs :P

not sense paying $20 for one or two good songs when i get them all for free with no retribution at all (thanks to napster, and now kazaalite)

Edit: i just remembered, this post applies more so to Mech than anyone else

these guys took ALL spyware out of kazaa. if you got spyware from installing kazaalite, you must not have got it from the real homepage and probably downloaded it from a third-party site which added stuff to it

I don't have kazaa but I think its their fault because they can't be issuing out free songs for free without getting sponsored right? So I think the "bad" website company is sponsoring them. :P
