Any of you have any experiance in any of the martial arts? I actually studied for about 7 years now. 6 or 7. I recieved my first degree in Tae Kwon do, brown in ju jutsu (juijitsu americanized. dumb.lol) and about a year in eskrima, a phillipino double stick art. Pretty cool stuff. How about any of you guys?

I can talk about Taekwondo, I practice it for about 5 years (with some interruptions), but I am doing pretty fine. I like it specially because about 70% of the Taekwondo art is based on the use of legs.

However I had to pay a big price for choosing TKD = my total lack of skill in soccer, and when I play it, I just can be a keeper. :-[

I have studied and competed in fencing which is called escrime in French. It's not a martial art, but is similar in some respects. I think it is clasified as a combat sport. My favorite weapon is the epee because it is the modern equivalent of the dueling sword and has the least amount of rules. I also enjoy sabre fencing on occasion. I am also interested in Kendo (I am into all kinds of sword fighting) which is a martial art. There is a club for Kendo not too far from where I live and I might join up soon.

oooh that is cool number 6. How long have you been fencing? is it a difficult skill to aquire? I have been wanting to train in a relatively unknown martial art here in america. It is called savaat. It is a native french martial art and is extremely amazing. any of you know about it?

It depends on the club you join and your level of physical fitness. If you are a decent athlete and the club you join is more into the athletic aspects of fencing you can be in competions within a month or 2. I learned from a very strict club that was run by a fencing master. He is the head coach for the Johns Hopkins fencing team. It took me a year to actually start competing. I have won a few competitions, but I am still not rated because of current inactivity in the USFA (United States Fencing Association). I have been into fencing since 1986. Here is a link to the USFA if you are interested in trying fencing in the U.S.:

I must say that I have not heard of savaat, but it sounds interesting :) .

well crappy shit, they don't teach tae kwon do within 6 miles from my home, so i'll have to do karate. It would be fun i guess, but my first choice was tae kwon do

I have been in Tae Kwon Do for about 8 years and and have my Third Dan black belt(Third Degree for those that dont know). I am also skilled in weapons training with swords and nun-chucks. Tae Kwon Do is an excilent thing to take up. Tae Kwon Do is not only a hobby to me but a life. I am planning on getting an instructors degree in a year or two. Tae Kwon Do is a wonderful thing to be because if I am stressed i can go relieve myself by working out or doing breathing exercises. Well keep this topic going i think it would be interesting to see how much of the community does martial arts.

Just some info for those who don't practice TKD.

There is two styles and therefore two associations.

One is the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation).

Other is the ITF (International Taekwondo Federation).

I practice the WTF style. It's the one that goes to the Olimpics.

Most of the TKD athlets practice the WTF style.

Ive never done mortial arts but i REALLY REALLY want to get into Hapkido. I dont know any clubs around here though except for twaekwondoe and karate and a few others. Hapkido is the shit if u ever want to learn how to kick some ass. Scorpion from MOrtal K0mbat:Deadly alliance is my motivations cause noone could beat me when i was corpion. His Hapkido syle was AWESOME because it focused on devastating 1-hit punches and then had some other kicks and quick punches to balance it out.

The style might be cool and if mastered very powerful but it wont be as cool in real life.

Life isn't like Mortal Kombat, hehehe. I'd also like it that, but it isn't ;)

Being serious, you don't learn martial arts to kick some ass, really if you want to kick someone better practice some street fight, (no the game, hehehe). Because if you know martial arts pretty well, once you fight for real you can do much more damage than simply kicking someone's ass, it's a pretty much dangerous weapon and if not used properly can get you in serious trouble.

In kungfu and taichi, once you've mastered the many forms and the many ways on how to kill someone easily, you learn that once you know how to kick ass, you don't have to. Just incapacitate someone and be done with it.

Exactally. When you learn the art and understand it and form disaplin and self control you really dont find the need to kick somebodys ass. But insted to use the art to disable the oponent. When you learn the art you dont feel the urge to kick somebodys ass.

Hapkido is a great martial art, Elite. I studied it for about a year, off and on. I only got an orange belt because my instructor moved away. It involves a lot of bone-breaking, ligament-tearing moves--a lot like you see in a Steven Seagal movie. My instructor, one of the few grand masters at his level in the world, used to tell us that to practice Hapkido you must practice at a level, on an imaginary pain scale of 1-10, of about 8. I'd love to study it some more.

Fencing is something I have always admired it has a certain grace to it if i could find an instructor I could learn it. Brazil has a style of martial arts I know people will be familiar with and that is capoeria the other I do not if you guys know anything about and that is Brazilian Jin-Jitsu. Brazilian jin-jitsu is based on judo, sambo, wrestling and various other elements. Aikido is a martial arts style that I have become interested in on a physical health level or peace of mind. It has some of it's basis in Jujitsu and Kenjutsu.
