Your Definition Of A Good Game?

Well, what makes up a good game for you?

Me its about graphics for 55% of it all, my friends were amazed when I spat at DIABLO II cause the graphics were to weak for me and they gave me a evil glance.

30% Units, and Game play

10% Storyline/voices

5% Community/How get online

70% Gameplay

10% Graphics

10% Storyline

10% Community

As evidenced by the sheer number of games I own, literally and figurativly. BTW, I thought this was a reference to the "gg" everyone usually puts at the end of a multiplayer game. A good game is one that is fair, minimal flaming.

40% mood

35% story

5% graphics

20% sound

That is about what I care for. Mood is what makes a good game for me. A good storyline with mood is just brilliant. Tie Fighter, Syndacite Wars, Morrowind, Dragon Warrior series, Destiny of An Emperor, Sim City 2000, Thief II, Vampire: The Masquerade, I could go on. but that is what I look for.

Well it depends totally. I mean. UT has no story that is worth looking at and yet it is a popular game.

UT however would never have been so popular if not for those great graphix and good sounds.

But generally i do have a few things i wish in a game, but i'll not cover story and stuff, only technical things:

Gameplay: 60%

Graphix: 20%

Sound 20%

In the case of games that can be played both ONLINE and OFFLINE:

Graphics/Sound/Interface/Presence of Bugs:33%

Gameplay/Replayability:33%

Multiplayer support:15%

Storyline:10%

Online community:5%

Intelligent AI: 4%

Presence of Skirmish mode: +10% BONUS :D

In the case of games that can only be played ONLINE:

Online community attitude/online support: 50%

Gameplay fun factor: 25%

BUGS: 15%

Graphics/Sound/Interface: 10%

Patches can make all the difference between a good game, and a sublime game. Online games are usually bug fixed rather quickly, due to quick player feedback and community activity, but games that can be played offline as well will really benefit greatly from online support and bug fixes, and can make so much difference.

Atmosphere is in my opinion core of everything. For example Heroes of Might and Magic. Nearly worst playing system ever developed in so good atmosphere, that it devours you for whole days. Atmosphere depends mostly from story, graphics and sounds, but no part from them is so important as atmosphere.

Atmoshpere: 40 % (like in Earth 2150, very good music and nice building/unit designs)

Gameplay/playability: 15 %

Storyline: 10 %

Graphics: 10 %

Community: 15 %

AI: 5 %

Online support: 5 %

You all put low %'s for graphics but you know you wouldn't buy a game that had sucky graphics :P The graphics set the atmosphere, and tie in with everything else, so it is pretty much essential these days.

Just that you guys don't realize how well graphics make the game better. You could have so much more fun flying around in space with eye candy galore than a good storyline that isn't good after you beat it.

No, but a good storyline certainly helps. Take Ra for instance. It has an excellent plot, but the graphics weren't impressive at all, even at that time.

Technicly Stronghold doesn't have good graphics either, but that game makes it up with gameplay.

Actually, I would buy a game with RA1 grphix if it had good gameplay.

That's why I am talking about nowadays, because nowadays we can get good graphics, we can get the whole package, and now graphics plays a bigger part.

Well yes, i prefer nice graphix over bad graphix sure. But i think Renegade was pretty cool, even though the graphix weren't that good.

But it's just too hard to determine what i want in a game. I just cannot say. Unreal Tournament is just so different from let's say Starcraft, and i like both (well UT not that much, but i think it's ok)

for me its 50% graphivs I want good graphics but I need 75% gameplay and 50% story and well a good 30 % community now thats a good 205% game ;) :D

That's totally untrue. Graphics are nice, but they don't make a game. I like games largely for the same reasons I like books: Good storyline and atmosphere, and overall something that keeps me interested. Of course, things like gameplay, replayability, and innovation factor into this as well. But I's much rather have a game with crappy graphics than something that I'm going to get bored of after I've seen the graphics.
