Nyarlathotep
This thread is used to put all things in that one knows. Not just anything, but tricks to prevent failures, or stuff one should know when upgrading. The intention is that everyone can post in here :)Example:When upgrading to a Intel P4 2.2Ghz or above, you can't use Windows 98. You have to have at least Windows ME to be able to install as OS. Windows 98 can't keep up with the data process times of the P4 2.2Ghz and above.
Terror
- When you're running Windows XP and you are trying to run a pre Windows XP program and it doesn't work, try installing a patch. If it still doesn't work go to windows explorer, right click on the file that you use to start the program with (usually a *.exe file) and choose compatibility. Then set compatibility to win98. This for instance helps, when trying to install Red Alert- If, your computer is slowing down after months of installing and uninstalling try to defragment your harddrive with programs like, Microsoft Defragmentation (comes standard with windows) or Norton SpeedDisk.- If you hear things like "click clack" when you're behind your PC restart as it is probably your HardDisk trying to crash. DukeLeto
-If you have an HP or Compaq machine and Windows XP SP1, DO NOT use the system recovery. It will erase your hard drive. Very bad. ;)
gryphon
Isn't that usually what happends when you get a recovery CD with your computer instead of the full Windows version ?Regardless of the brand of PC you've bought.
DukeLeto
excuse me, to clarify: the built-in System Restore. Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Don't use that.
Terror
that shouldn't have anything to do with compaq or whatsoever. Never heard about such a thing either. Compaq does not create hardware. They make systems. But they use other companies hardware and put their logo's on them
DukeLeto
No, no, trust me...You get the warning after you d/l SP1. It only happens with HP and Compaq PCs.

Desert_Eagle25
-Before Installing, Uninstalling, Updating drivers or doing anything big or important on your computer always save a checkpoint on System Restore(Comes stadard with WinXP) so that if there are any problems, u can just use System Restore to turn back the clock and set your computer to where it was before the mis-hap.-If you ever notice that your computer makes a slight "zzzzzz..." sound that means your processor is overheating, or you got a bug stuck inside of your comp...If it is overheating try seeing if your Fan that cools down ur processor is functioning properly, if so then maybe you are doing too many things at once and your proccessor can't keep up, also try opening the side panel and leave a fan there until you can get a stronger cooler. Also try the new computers with the Liquid Cooling systems.-Make sure to Defragment your computer monthly, as it usually speeds up your computer drasticly. Apollyon
-if theres a big switch on the back of your computer near the fan and power supply, dont toggle it! :P its probably the voltage converter (ie american or english, english being 240 volts and american being less) if you do toggle it then sparks will fly ;D. gryphon
Nope, you don't see any of them. There's to much smoke and you condensators [ don't know if I've translated it correctly ] will shoot out of the thing. Nothing more exciting will happen unfortunately. ;)
Apollyon
when I toggled my button (by accident btw) it literally sparked everywhere made loads of smoke and lots of noise and really smelled weird ;D.

Nyarlathotep
Have you ever had trouble with Emperor dropping out to the desktop or even the battle scene view suddenly changing on you? If so, borrow a different mouse for your computer and try it. You will be amazed that the little rat causes game troubles like that.
Timenn
If you have the idea that more and more hardware (or even software) is starting to malfunction. Check your power supply. The power supply can be responsible for the strangest errors
number6
If you have the idea that more and more hardware (or even software) is starting to malfunction. Check your power supply. The power supply can be responsible for the strangest errorsI would like to add that the power supply is usually a problem when you add too many components to your PC with a low wattage power supply. Most systems used to have 250W power supplies before the newest set of CPU's and video cards put higher demands on the power supply. When AMD released their Athlon processor they recommended that the power supply be >= 300W to allow for the increased power consumption of this processor. Here are some links to a few articles on power supplies:http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/index.htmlhttp://www.compute-aid.com/atxspec.htmlhttp://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.html?i=1128&p=
Timenn
I believe the power supply will also fade down by the time.

Timenn
Be careful. If you update windows 98, with windows update. And the computer crashed. Windows won't work then anymore properly. Bad, bad, bad... :-
Acriku
My friend shut down his computer while the drum was drumming (updating windows settings), because it stayed there for the longest time, but didn't do anything?

Cyborg
Check that your cpufan(for amd processors) isn't loose. It has been a problem that heavy amd cpufan's have actually fallen off because they're too heavy.(this applies strongly to you who have overclocked your cpu and have change into a new fan instead of watercooling or maybe peltier element)
