Green_Atriedes
Which older dune books should you read before you read the new dune books like House harkonnen, House Atriedes and house Corrino?
gryphon
I whould say all of them.I personally like the story troughout 1 - 6 more then the new Dune books.[ but mayby Dune and Dune Messiah, perhaps Children of Dune whould be enough. ]
Gunseng_Harkonnen
Yes, cos next parts are thousands years after Dune events and its something different, without Fremen and melange.
gryphon
No, because the main carracters, houses and the basis for the univers is clear in the first books. It becomes a bit more extended in the last ones but I don't think that information is nessesary in able to understand the story line of the New Dune Books. It is however needed to have a better understanding of the "univers" and events that happen in the first books. quoudam72
Gryphon is correct read the first books (Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Dune Heretics and Chapterhouse Dune) written by Frank Herbert if possible. Reading the series as it was written by Frank Herbert first will help you understand the Duniverse. The prequels attempt to set the stage for the events of the Frank Herbert's books. Gunseng_Harkonnen is trying to say the new novels (House Atreides, House Harkonnen and House Corrino) take place years (the exact timeline is not important at the moment) before the original series written by Frank Herbert. Gunseng_Harkonnen
I said that before you read houses books, you don`t need read all series, you can read only the first parts and you will know enough about Dune world. This isn`t connection with Houses books and e. g. God Emperor, this take place thousend years after events that are in Dune and more of characters died exept son of Paul. quoudam72
That makes more sense than what you posted before excuse me for my misunderstanding of what you were saying (do you see how your first post could also be related to what I posted). I should have not tried to speak for you but I wanted to make it clearer for the person asking the question.
nemafakei
To make this more clear...Ideally: read all six (Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor, Heretics and Chapterhouse)Definitely: read Dune itself. But if you are short on time or patience: read Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. (ie the first 3)
gryphon
Lol, that's what I've said. :)
Alexander_Ordos
Actualy (In my opinion) books should be read by a storyline and when i read Dune after all the prequels it was understandable and if you're new Dune reader , you should begin from the prequels cause Frank puts more science and philosophy less action... Though Frank created Dune but House Corrino is the best for me ;)
nampigai
Well if you look at all the errors and mistakes in the prequels I think Franks books would be the best choice to start with.
jacobdouds
I found CoD onwards very boring. I would just read Dune and Dune Messiah if you don't have patience.
Gunseng_Harkonnen
CoD was good end of history of Paul`s family. And it wasn`t boring, it was last where Dune world looked like Dune world.
exatreide
yes it was. i would read the first dune atleast. just to get a idea of whats goning on.
Gunseng_Harkonnen
You say that it was boring, ExAtreides? Maybe it wasn`t as good at first and second, but atmosphere in this book was better than in other parts.
el_d00d
CoD was good end of history of Paul`s family. And it wasn`t boring, it was last where Dune world looked like Dune world. It was boring, twice I just stopped reading because I got bored (last year I finally finished it :))
Gunseng_Harkonnen
I surrend! ;)So I must be fanatical fanatic, if I like it (I like whole "Dune") :)
gryphon
I didn't find children of Dune boring, not more than Messiah that is.
Acriku
Messiah was my first, and was the best! Then I read the first one, and that was better. It depends on what you like, I myself like conspiracy and politic fiction.
Alexander_Ordos
For Dune goes no comment and for Dune Mesyah - The first part is a bit boring but from about err page 152 it becomes very interesting and intriguing... ::)
Gunseng_Harkonnen
The first dune book is best. But I can call any Dune book boring.
gryphon
Yea, that's true.Near the end Dune Messiah get's better.
Nefud
I think Dune was more easier to understand than Messiah and CoD.(Unfortunately I read Messiah first, Dune second and CoD third. This is not the best way to read them, but I only had a chance to do so... ;) )
Acriku
Hehe that's the same way I did it. Oh well ;)
