Welcome to sunny Uganda! There are a few things about soon-to-be-passed legislation that you should know...

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1946645,00.html

Are you a doctor willing to treat gay people? That's "aiding and abetting homosexuality," and you're going to prison.

Are you failing to report your gay friends to the proper authorities? Prison again.

Are you writing an article in a newspaper about any of this? That's "promoting homosexuality" - 5 to 7 years in jail.

And don't even ask what might happen if, heaven forbid, you're actually gay.

These measures are proudly sponsored by several factions within the American Religious Right, in the hope that, one day, the Land of the Free

I saw this comment elsewhere: "Uganda: where love will be punishable by death." It's a bit sappy, but seems to summarise the issue nicely.

Edit: Also, extradition? Overkill much.

If anything's worth a laugh though, it's the phrase "aggravated homosexuality." It's almost as ridiculous as Nick Griffin's "Militant homosexuals." Clearly if we're so dangerous to society, we should be more visible in the military.

You guys forgot, If a heterosexual couple engages in anal intercourse they are also punishable like homosexuals.

Man this is law will get exploited for black mailing and competitor elimination.

Dante: I don't think they can ask; nor can you tell.

But... wow. Uganda? I hadn't had them pegged as being particularly homophobic... this is the sort of bill you'd expect to find in the Middle East, not in sub-Saharan Africa?

A lot of Evangelists are active in Africa and since the poor people make some of the most devote followers usually the result is expected.

It will be interesting to see which governments agree to extradite gay people to Uganda, and which governments tell the Ugandan ambassador to go perform acts of aggravated homosexuality with himself.

But you see, the mere knowledge that you exist makes Nick Griffin lose all interest in being married or having sex with women. So, because of you, no child will have the privilege of being raised by the glorious leader of the British nation. Oh, horror of horrors! ;D

Dante: I don't think they can ask; nor can you tell.

That's an American policy. I don't think the British military approaches the issue in the same way.

Well, Uganda is also home to a long-running insurgency by the Lord's Resistance Army, which is the closest thing to a Christian version of the Taliban. Perhaps this bill is partially intended to appease the LRA or its supporters.

I know. I intended it to be humorous, Mr. O.

Also, how do you create links with specific titles? Such as what you did with "Lord's Resistance Army"?

The British military lifted it's ban in 1999, if I remember correctly. Surprisingly late, but there was some resistance from what might be called traditionalists.

...US evangelists accused of spreading religious zeal behind homophobic campaigns

"Christianity" as the "Religion of Love" is almost as farcical as Islam as the "Religion of Peace".

Only as recent 1990?

Did they just forget about it or something? Political pressure? Even so, I would have thought that homosexuality was already more widely accepted by this time. Frowned upon by the masses perhaps, but surely not considered a disease?

Posted

Oh you know bureaucrats, they won't do anything until they get forteen copies of eighteen forms of approval.

Besides that, the situation in Africa (among other places) is evidence enough that the world is not as enlightened as we might hope.

Posted

But if they ban same-sex hugs, what's to stop them from banning different-sex hugs, or hugs between family members?! Soon nobody in the world would be able to hold a baby!

Homosexuality was scrapped from the DSM in 1974, allthough that itself doesn't necessarily mean much - just that sufficient numbers of psychiatrists from different countries disagreed with it being included.

I'm pretty sure that in the Netherlands psychiatrists stopped viewing homosexuality as a disease somewhere in the 60'ties...and I imagine that most western countries did so long before 1990.

But of course, with such a reknowned psychiatrist as anathasios we can expect that the psychiatric consensus will move in the opposite direction in the future...

Posted

I suspect not, since the profession of Psychiatry deserves a place in DSM too, but is not listed either! ;D

such a reknowned psychiatrist as anathasios...

I can bear your mutilating of my name, but calling me a psychiatrist is a serious offense! >:(

My practice in Psychiatry was short termed. In this short period a middle aged patient fell in love with me and wrote a poem for me which she was reading repeatedly to the other patients and I managed to make an old man who feared that he was being watched/followed not be afraid anymore. Pretty bad for the profession as this would mean that they would loose their customer, er patient. Needless to say that finally I received a good mark but in between I was kicked out from the ps. clinic!

We have deviated from the belief system that sex is for reproduction. But this train of thought that sex is solely for pleasure is only around 100 years old.

And what does the so-called enlightened West have to show for it?

A society that is almost over and done with. Seniors shuffling around in our central squares of our towns. Couples only having one child. A divorce rate through the roof.

Deviant porn being only 4 clicks away on the Internet.

Male/male group sex being heralded as normal.

If it weren't for the immigrants there would be no youth and life.

It has nothing to do with being "enlightened". I just think you have some rather quaint ideas about history, society, and life, among other things. For example...

We have deviated from the belief system that sex is for reproduction. But this train of thought that sex is solely for pleasure is only around 100 years old.

So sex is only for reproduction? Then why the fuck does fucking feel so good?! (God I love this boardware! Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck! ;D ) But who says sex is SOLELY for pleasure? I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that. (Damn, I wish I had! You know someone like that? Got their number? Gimme gimme! :P ) I guess you want to go back to the ole medieval way of doing things, slap a chastity belt on the ole bitch's crotch and just open her up (both senses!) long enough to scream, "Brace yerself, Ludmilla, here I cum!"?

Yeah, I think I'll opt for "enlightened". ::)

And what does the so-called enlightened West have to show for it?

A society that is almost over and done with.

REALLY? I guess things are worse there in your state than I imagined.

Seniors shuffling around in our central squares of our towns.

Eeew! What an unsightly blight! Don't they have homes for the old fucks anymore? (Sparkles?! Hee hee!) But seriously, with ever improving medical care, what do you expect? So are we going to roll medical technology back to the medieval level, too? Dayum!

Couples only having one child.

How many are they supposed to have? Five? Ten? Fifteen? That's right, keep on churning Ole Virginy's varginar until the damned thing prolapses and hangs out down to her knees! The LORD will be mickle pleased! Sure as Hell didn't say, "Be fruitful and do long division!", now did He?! :D

A divorce rate through the roof.

Meh. Marriage is an anachronism to begin with. We'd do well to just shuck the whole damned thing. Simple solution to a stupid problem!

Let's face it: people change. If they grow apart, why force them to stay together?

Deviant porn being only 4 clicks away on the Internet.

Four clicks?! Oh, honey, you POOR thing! That's what BOOKMARKS are for! I'll PM you with instructions.

(Oh, and define "deviant".)

Male/male group sex being heralded as normal.

Huh? How can it be just male/male if it's group sex? Wouldn't it be male/males or males/males? I'm confused... could you post some links? :D

If it weren't for the immigrants there would be no youth and life.

Well, finally, THANK GOD for arnoldo! I knew the Good Lord had a plan for him, too! (I mean, that's the only reason... never mind.)

Seriously, aren't you being just a bit over-the-top with the gloom and doom bullshit? Dayum, lighten up already. Stop worrying about what other people are doing with their genitals and do something with your own for a change! Take a hands-on approach and get a grip on yourself! Give your John Thomas a good talking to. (If you're that limber!) Get laid or SOMETHING. SHEEESH! ::)
