If you missed Live 8 because you were too busy with something else, or you want to see a performance again, AOL has put them online. Although AOL only has them in stream version and you must use IE and must install active X programs which uses an AOL media player...

OR you can simply go to

http://www.sonician.com/live8/list.html

And download the videos in quicktime format.

Some good performances.

Doubt these concerts will do anything to end poverty in Africa (or bring awareness).

lol I know. I dont see how this will change a damn thing.

No we arent asking for money, we just want to bring awareness to the people. Politicians really go for that!  ... beh lol

Live-8 was a complete waste of time. The only one's who benefited were the bands and celebrities. Its all bullshit the lot of it. I appreciate Geldofs intentions but I'm afraid peoples' egos have won this time. It did absolute shit for Africa.

A campaign to raise awareness for Africa through music featuring an assembly of all-white artistes? Interesting. These people are spoiling Africa's image, making people think that Africa is really so poor and can't help herself. Truth is that Africa has lots and lots of resources in the form of mineral deposits, oilfields and people. If the resources are put to good use and not into the corrupt government officials' Swiss bank accounts and the leaders actually do some work instead of just siphoning money into their own pockets while letting their people suffer, their countries would be progressing. An example of an idiot leader would be the Swaziland king. His country has the highest AIDS-population rate in the whole world and the people live on an average of US$1 per day yet he is planning to wed for the umpteenth time while building new grand palaces for each of his numerous wives and getting new Mercedez Maybachs for his private collection.

Botswana has diamonds and with the help of foreign experts and good leadership, their country is progressing as quickly as South Africa. If progressing nations are rewarded instead of given all the 'debt relief' and 'aid' nonsense, every nation would aim to keep progressing. As for this 'debt relief' and 'aid' ideas, they are just lies, lies and more lies.

THE Live 8 RUBBISH does not raise the awareness of the public with regard to the need to return their looted billions sitting in western banks. Funds which - if returned - would negate the need for their propaganda concert meant to raise peanuts while smearing the continent and raising awareness of the existence of washed-out rock has-beens. The peanuts that will be raised by their concert - perhaps $100 million - if that, will be seen as a huge amount - with many ignorant westerners assuming this should go a long way in changing things on the continent.

Meanwhile the hard questions will remain unanswered - such as the issue of REPARATIONS, the return of looted billions, removal of subsidies for western farmers, removal of IMF/World Bank 'conditionalities' for debt relief qualification. Removal of the requirement for 'good governance' as a pre-requisite for debt relief, since 'good governance' is nothing but a by-word for liberalising our trade to allow their goods to completely dominate our markets, killing off their local industries, while they maintain tariffs and subsidies designed to keep their products out.

Did Low actully just try to do a meaningfull post?

...Well done...Sort of.

Low..

Africa can't help itself, It's to divided in tribal warfare and internal strife to get any shit together, The only nations that are actully doing decently are the nations above the Sarahara, and south africa.

Exatreides, the nation with its famous white farmers is Zimbabwe, with Mugabe as their leader. The white farmers at present are furious over the current situation they are in, where they are being forced off their land and they fight with the locals and the militia assigned secretly by Mugabe to force them out. If you look at the situation so far, only 5 white farmers have died in "combat" in the recent years since the anti-white farmers movement started again while many more of the black locals have died as a result of the... battle?

A good gig and yes it did raise awareness about africa and its plight, at least here in the UK we've had nothing but africa from all sections of the media and the idea was to put pressure on world leaders by making people aware of the hidden agendas of other counties and african leaders.

Education is the only key to peace and prosperity but traditional/tribal values are hard to overcome i work with a Ugandan who is well educated yet through her upbringing still belives Idi Amin Dada was the best leader Uganda ever had!!!

Eh? So? The fact remains they were driven off their land with force and that land made imposible to irigate, forcing thousands to starve or relly on U.N food shipments. The White's said they would not have minded leaving if givin the chance, but being forced off their lands make them defened themselfs.

Whats your point? Black people have died trying to illieagly push white farmers off their land so they can piliage and destroy that land?

Here, here! An excellent post, and you are absolutely right.

I would also like to add that one of the major reasons for all the civil wars and ethnic violence in Africa is the fact that the borders of nearly all African countries were drawn by European colonial powers. If someone took Europe and drew some random country borders across it, we'd have a lot of similar problems too.

If we really want to help Africa, we need to rework the economic relationships between African countries and the West. Africa must overcome the legacy of imperialism, especially in economic terms. When the European powers conquered Africa, they wanted to milk it of its natural resources and ship them over to Europe. Therefore, when the Europeans left, African countries were left with economies that had been taylored for this purpose. And now the economic relationship between Africa and the West has remained almost the same as in colonial times: Africa is a source of natural resources, cheap basic goods and cheap labour. In fact, it's even better for the West, since it no longer has to spend any money policing its African colonies, or worry about Africans dying by the millions.

Zimbabwe is a special case. Farmers weren't driven off their land anywhere else.

Not that white farmers have much claim over African land (that land was stolen by the whites just a little over a century ago, after all...), but what's going on in Zimbabwe is unjustified, counter-productive and very, very stupid. Then again, that's what you get from wacko dictators like Mugabe...

It makes me sad. Africa has been a haven for human rights abuses for hundreds of years. First the muslims, and then the white westerners. We came in and colonized africa, taking advantage of the land and people. After many years we finally pulled out, leaving africa in shambles. The african peoples were never equipped to deal with more "advanced" nations, never really building a stable infrastructure. The colonialists divided and seperated entire tribes, creating the countries we know now that had no cultural influence from the native peoples, and then we just left without a wink of help. Now the african peoples are trying to fight back but face curruption in the wake of their own demise.

It seems to me that africa cant be saved unless the world globalizes more, both politically and economically. If this happens though it is a sign of the times for many christians like me. It seems inevitable of what will eventually happen.

Ahh but remember who TOLD us to leave Africa? The USA demanded that European nations left their colonised lands, and in return they would aid us in the Second World War. (Blackmail if you will ;)) That is why Africa was left in shambles, because of the speed in which European powers had to leave the land. Its no good blaming it all on the colonisers - the US should not have forced the issue, although sooner or later European nations would have to left anyway. Africas' borders are a mess but its too late and complicated to resolve now. Politicans find it much easier to throw money at the problem. :-

Geldof is a fool for thinking money solves all, and so are all those people who 'did their bit' by going to a rock concert (charity is fun now eh?) just to see their favourite artists. I wonder how many people would have wanted to get tickets for Live-8 if it was just African artists... Oh no! That wouldn't be worth it, I mean there'd be no Pink Floyd reunion! What a turn off... Maybe I'm dwindling a bit here... All I'm trying to say is celebrities know shit about Africa and we're pathetic for thinking that by listening to them, we're making a difference.

America never did that, The atlantic charter mearly stated that you can't use force to keep them under control and if they want to be independent they can be.

Yes that is true. The tribal divides are what plague many of the African countries and hinder progress.... The new Uganda president is bringing the many different tribes to work together and at the moment it is working. He is getting them to set aside their tribal differences and work together for the good of their country.

Btw, I am not sure if this Live 8 thing even raised any awareness. Most people are already believing in the myth and have the misconception that Africa is dead broke and all the people are starving and they all can't do anything about it. I wouldn't be surprised that this concert didn't even "put pressure on world leaders by making people aware of the hidden agendas of other counties and african leaders."

Seems that AOL profited from Live 8 and is sending their lawyers after anyone who posts direct links to the videos for people to download. Original sonican link at first post in this thread.

Sonican shut down AOL sent its lawyers and shut down his website for several days.

I didn't believe (and still don't) that linking to the source video should be illegal. It was a free concert, with free access via AOL, and so I was merely providing another route to the data. A lot of people were having issues with the AOL site, with timeouts, errors and too much advertising.

But then I got an e-mail last Thursday from a lawyer representing AOL. He informed me that what I was doing was indeed illegal and that I have been formally asked to take the page down.

In my hot-headedness, I informed him that according to previous lawsuits, it was found that deep-linking was not illegal and that I was ok to do what I was doing.

They wrote back saying that I was in fact, wrong.. and that I should really think about what I'm doing.

See, AOL appeared to be a big hero for a lot of people during Live 8.. the tv coverage for most was shit. Too many people talking about the music, and not enough, well.. music.

Apparently in the US the coverage was the worst, so much so that MTV apologized and re-ran about 12 hours of footage commercial and interruption free a week later.

AOL's web feeds were great when the concert was happening. You could watch any concert at any time, and change between them as you saw fit. For free.

But afterwards, they provided the footage for people to continue watching. For free. But then, nothing is ever realy free now, is it?

See, all those ads make them money. Lots of money. And being the exclusive provider of the concerts on the Internet scored them some pretty sweet contractual agreements. They had everything locked down. But then I came along and screwed it all up.

For a few days, I actually outranked AOL on Google when searching for "Live 8 video". I was #1.. and AOL was #2. Most of the rest of the top 10 results were links pointing to my site.

I've no doubt all this was making them rather angry. So of course they came after me.

In the end, I've closed the site down cause the numbers they were dangling in front of me should I chose to continue this little "crusade" were pretty big. In the hundreds of thousands big.

And I don't have that kind of money, or resources to fight it.

Also a less popular site that hosted some links was recently shut down

link

So if I were to post links to files hosted on Fed2k, while I myself was not claiming them as my own, would you send lawyers after me gob?

I can see if it consumes all your bandwidth and you cant operate then sure, but I doubt this was happening to AOL (even though you needed IE plus an AOL plugin to view them and they were streaming which meant a lot of buffering crap.)

So is linking to a file or website = illegal if the website owner does not want you to link to them?

Damn AOL sucks.

click here for how to get the sonican page before it got taken down. rename the file before downloading to .html at end of filename.

Damn AOL sucks.

Thats it in a nutshell.  I had used thier service for a short time for dial-up, and now they are still like a bad telemarketer that never ends. However, I still go out of my way to listen to the whole 10 min., pre-scripted fumbling line-o-crap sucker sales pitch to try and get me back, before saying "not interrested..click".

Posted

No I would either change the location of the files or block the referering site.

Basically bandwidth costs money and the only way to get money back on the downloading of large files is to either (a) take donations for bandwidth or (b) use ads or other approaches to raise the income. I'm guessing AOL won't have much luck with approach (a).

I honestly think its about the artists needing to feel good about "giving something back".  Personally, I think if each of those artists that wanted to "help" had to 1st provide at least 1m to set up $500 grants to small villiages in Africa before they could perform; then I think that Live 8 would do some good.

Remember the Help Ethopia stuff that was done (I think that was the late 1980's?)...  People are still starving like they were, but the "world" has heard enough and has moved on.
