man!

I finally got a friend of mine to read the book, and now he is a huge fan. We are talking about Dune a lot which I havent done with somebody in a long time, which is getting me back into it. We were talking about how the book is focused on dialog more than anything. It is such an epic and it is so intelligent and political that it just kicks ass. Have any ofyou guys ever gotten somebody to read the books? if so have any stories?

Most I ever tried was to get my friend and this girl to watch FHD with me. It didn't turn out good as they were paying more attention to each other than the miniseries. (would insert kiss smiley but its not working when I click on it.)

Don't think we made it through the first CD...

Ungrateful bastards!

I keep threatening to have a Duneathon.

hehe, yeah I am afraid at times to show the movie as it completely changes the perception made from reading the book instead.

Got someone to look the movie... as it is typical of Lynch's movie, many don't have a clue of WTH it was really about and don't go further so... He preferred my second movie from Kubrik (it was a classics-o-ton).

I also found two person who read the books, and I found they had read the book after that they were already the two persons I was hanging with really... that's not me evangelising Dune, that's Dune evangelising me ???

I tried once, but I got lazy.

My friend watched CoD (not sure which one(s)). I haven't watched CoD yet, myself. Just read the books, saw the Lynch movie and the games (Except Dune 2k and FH's Dune)

My girlfriend and I watched Lynch's film a while back, and I lent herone of my copies of the book.  She thought the film was pretty neat, and is interested in the social aspects of the book, from what I've told her, but I don't know if she'll ever ge around to reading the book.

Do not attempt to convert people with anything other than the books. If they are converted by movies or games, they are false. Of course the movies or games could be the way to introduce them to the dune universe, but the books are the most important.

It was the Lynch's Dune that got me into Dune.

I have converted my best friend.

1. I demoed Dune2000, he was impressed by the movie shortcuts and the Dune war-field, finally he bought the game.

2. I lent him Lynch Dune DVD.

3. I lent him CoD miniseries DVD.

4. He wanted to know the whole story and bought all the FH novels.

However he admit he is somewhat "contemplative", so i guess my success was a fairly easy one. Converting action-addicted people would be a much different challenge...

Hi everyone! My first post.

One of my friends just finished Dune. He is going to read Messiah. I don't know if he will go farther than that. The Dosadi Experiment was the first Herbert he read... he liked it, but I don't think he is as much of a fan of Herbert's style as I am. I do know that he does enjoy Herbert's philosophy.

My friend Jen started to read the Dune series at the same time I did... but only made it to Messiah. Recently, she picked Children up and has not stopped! I'm so proud of her! Already half way through Heretics. She loves Herbert's philosophy, and is looking forward to the last two books deeper exploration of the Bene Gesserit.

And then there was my friend, Shannon... very strange. She would listen to me talk about Dune for hours. She would use terms from Dune (when she had distracting thoughts, she would say "Ghafla!" to banish them away. I even heard her say "Prime Computation" a few times.) Mentats and the Bene Gesserit fascinated her. She even dressed up for me in all black, with a hood, and let me take pictures. Then was very excited to see them after I had photoshopped the pics to give her eyes of Ibad. Guess what? Never picked-up one book by Herbert. Very strange, indeed.

Great forum!

I hope she read God emperor of Dune.

Otherwise I'm not sure how she can understand Heretics. Unless you meant you were 1/2 way done.

Glad you like the forum.

Yes, she has read God Emperor... and loved it!

It was one of those things where she finished Children, put the book down... went right to B&N to get God Emperor. Did the same thing with Heretics, and will probably do the same for Chapterhouse.

Even after reading Dune and Messiah, she was surprised how much she likes the later books.

I have asked a couple of my friends to watch the Dune miniseries when it was shown on cable television a year or two ago, though only one of them watched the entire miniseries.

But after a couple of years, one of them got hooked on Dune. But a pity! The original books are quite hard to fight. He had to start on Heretics as his first Frank Herbert's Dune book. It's quite sad...

No, but if she should learn a thing or two from the Honoured Matres... :D

Dammit Vangaurd, I said I'm sorry!  I didn't know you were being serious when you said you had a date!
