i would say that if your theoretical life expectancy is "double or more" than your current age at time of murder ... then people could view it as being a waste.

Death penalties go against my principles, but he certainly should receive a life sentence.

Also are you sure that a life sentence equals 20 years in the USA? In the Netherlands people say that as well, but this is a myth- life sentences are life sentences.

Good grief, people really do get worked up about this... What exactly makes a crime against a child so much worse than a crime against an adult? Granted children are less able to defend themselves but doesn't this just make the people who prey on them weaker?

Because rape can cause severe psychological trauma's. Children aren't fully developed individuals, so it will harm them more then adults.

Hmm, I once listened to an interesting story some psychologist was talking about on television. He spoke about that castration would not be such a good thing to do in such case, because such people who do such things, are not going to stop because they are castrated, because they don't walk around with those specefic sick ideas to do to someone, but they want to hurt someone in any some sort of way.

So he claimed that other more effective things then castrating should be done about such persons.

Oh, and why do people come up with those ideas for punishments? Should we lose our sanity when someone else did lose it?

And this is for times when not everyone can be saved. You hear it in the news how more tragic it is when a woman or child gets killed then men.

Although save the woman and children is more of a history type thing, since it would be kinda gentleman like to save others instead of yourself (if you're a guy).

This whole issue reminds me of an letter I read about violence in gaming once.  Someone started ranting about how horrible it was that a game like Deer Hunter existed, despite the fact that, at the same time, there existed games like Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein (well, it was still big in my eyes, anyway), and so on, which involved killing things, including humans, in much more violent and graphical ways.

I think one of the main reasons behind the problem with killing children as opposed to adults is that children are still seen as "innocent" and "sacred" in a way.  Indeed, they have not lived as long as adults, but I don't think that's a sufficient argument, as no one should have to have their life cut short, no matter how much of it they've already used.

Dust, I have a question for you.  And when I ask it, understand that I'm not setting you up to flame you or anything (would I do such a thing?).  Rather, I am trying to further undertstand your way of thinking on this issue.  Say this man didn't kill the girl, or even saw the girl, and say he never killed, raped, or molested anyone throughout his life.  Would you say it was okay that he was looking at child pornograpohy in the first place?

I sorta agree with dustie, in that a person killed is a person killed, treat 'em equal. But not get emotional ? The guys a sicko and deserves to be dead. I do not belive you should be able to murder and expect to live.

But what does worry me is how many more times in our lives will we read/hear about this happening again. It will happen again, while there are sickos around. But can we prevent it ?

Why should we get barbaric all the sudden? Are we going to treat such criminals the same way as that they treated other people?

And please stay off the myth that a life imprisonment would cost more then a death penalty. I once saw some statistics about death penalties costing more then one life imprisonment.

This has also much to do with the fact that quite alot of sentenced to death people wait for their punishment for quite many years. And all that time they sit in special prisons, which obviously cost more too...

Beside that, people do work in prisons, and believe me, those jobs they do are jobs we rather not do unless we really needed the money...
