Degeneration of Horror Films

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about this, and I've decided that recent horror films (last decade or so) have really been crappy compared to most 80s Horror films. The cult classics like Freddy, Jason, the Thing, all those really good ones... the best we get now are poor remakes :P They're remaking Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which in my opinion was pretty bad to begin with... the dark comedic horror films of the 80s are also something that has recently been lost to the world... such delightful classics like Cabin By The Lake and I'll Eat Your Heart are yet to be matched ;)

Thoughts? ;)

Not really horror films in the past year are actully getting better... and the fact that atleast horror movies are coming out is a good thing...

Texas chainsaw massacre...

House of the day.....

Remake of Dawn of the dead.....

Ah phla to that :P

House of the Dead is just a mish mash of every other cliched horror film of late :P I mean, I really enjoyed the Mothman Prophecies, the Thing remake, and a few others... but I think the 90s have just given rise to poor remakes and cheesy versions of 80s horror films, just with new character names ;)

Horror films have always been a mixed bag in my opinion. I thought Jeepers Creepers was quite good though flawed. The creature in that movie was very interesting. I have watched the movie several times and enjoyed it each time.

Are we talking about the simple horror flicks that only involve somebody/thing going and mindlessly killing others?(scream)

The Shining.

Excorsist

Clockwork Orange

Alien

I do agree that they are getting bad as in you actually know what is going to happen next in the scene. I really dislike most teen movies(easily predictable) and their horror type films are bad, all the scream, I know what you did last sumemr etc.

In general, the only horror films to be released over the past decaded wer the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" crapola.

Now we are faced with a flood of remakes and 'vs' flicks.

However, horror films are getting better in general. There seems to be a pattern with horror being socially unacceptable, then 'cool' becasue it *is* social unacceptable, then commercial as Hollywood mass markets the 'cool' horror films, then stupid becasue all of the horror movies are watered down Hollywood hype, and finally socially unacceptable because of all the bad and "mindlessly violent" horror films Hollywood keeps making...

c'est la vie!

If you are a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street (Freddy Krueger) series, check out our community at http://y2krueger.cjb.net, http://kruegerfreddy.cjb.net, and the corresponding fan forum at http://noesforum.cjb.net. You might recognize one of the mods. ;)

If you like the original Exorcist, make sure you see Legion - Exorcist 3, which is actually based on the book "Legion" which was Blatty's sequal to the Exorcist. The movie is also directed by Blatty, so it's faitful and stylish. And... a promising Exorcist 4: The Beginning is slated for February of next year.

Andrew: Why do you classify A Clockwork Orange as horror? You are the first person I have ever seen say that... but kudos for mentioning two Stanley Kubrick films in your list!

Films in general are degenerating into adaptations, remakes and the plain stupid. Only 1 in 5 films released nowadays seems to be written directly for screen with an original idea, and I'm being more than generous with that number.

Freddy Vs Jason was a pretty sweet movie in my opinion. It was fun to watch, I found it entertaining enough.

Im not a big fan of the horror movie thing but im getting more into it. Have watched a few freddy movies and a few jason movies. Only problem with jason is its getting really rediculious how he can in no way die ever. In Jason X when he got blown to pieces, That should have been the end.....

I think that they should blow him to fuck, take his body parts and bury them at differnt locations on the planet and if that dosent work and he somehow manages to "arise" again they should like throw him on a desert island and nuke him or something lol....

28 days later was based on a similar series of B-rate zombie flics whose name escapes me. At least that's what I was told.

EDIT: Well I can't find anything to back that up other than that it "Combines themes from many older horror films" but that doesn't really constitute as 'being based on' so 28 days later rises in my estimation. ;)

Well your wrong anyway 28 days later is not a zombie movie as it dosnt have any zombies.

It has infected. These arnt dead they are mearly infected who wish to feed. once they cant feed they die.

A zombie is a reanimated corpse who has only the primitive "feed" order from the primordial goup we inherited from the reptiles. But these are dead the infected in 28 days later are not.

Thus 28 days later is a original movie. :)

28 Days later, very good, but it does have attributes of other films/ideas, ok, so broadly speaking, Day of the Trifids--- just think about them both for a min.

OK, so not a 'classic' horror, but check out DogSoldiers, very good.
