I went to download Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory today, going to several sites. It went something like this:

Gamespy: Pay or wait!

GamersHell: Pay or Wait!

Gamespot: Pay or wait!

3DGamers: Pay or wait!

and so on.

We have pay-to-play games now, for which you have to shell out rather ludicrous amounts of dough to play a game you've already paid for. You have to pay park at the beach. You have to pay to use highways. You have to pay for your !@#$ing water, for crying out loud! What is it with having to pay for everything?

Oh yeah, if everyone charges, you have to pay or do without. Then all of these companies can get richer! Duh, of course! Silly me! ::)

Gotta love capitalism.

Thus concludes the Duke's first rant topic. Boy did that feel good. 8)

You don't need to pay. You can chose another server where you can download it from, difference is that it'll be a bit slower to download.

Unless you're talking about registered download only..

and they love comoplaining when u download their movies, their games and their music!!!

such as matrix reloaded, made over $250 million, yet they still complain about people downloading it, even though the people who downloaded it went to watch it first, but didnt want to shell out $8 every time they went again.

such as that scene with the architechire, some people had to watch that twice

Thank you! :D

See, people, this is why we should all love Nav. ;D

why, thank you. i rarely get recognized for all the good stuff i've done for fed2k over the years, so it's nice when someone does once in a while. glad to be of service

funny when you talk about paying for the highways etc. Now if all major companies paid their taxes and didn't use offshore accounts, I think we would all be in for a dramatic fall in taxes for the "everyday" guy. But just think about how many trillions the companies move around and we can't do jack shit about it.

Yeah, about an hour and 20 minutes longer. :O

That isn't much to wait actually[if you have enough time or have a fast connection] and paying any $$$ to get it faster is really senseless, just wait for a little longer. :)

*Specially for Edric*

Fast-forward into the future:

"If you want capitalism, you have to pay or have socialism or if you even demand faster service, then you will have strict communism :O :O

Hoping for future times where we all have 8mb connections at home is no use when you want to gain speed with it as the downloads will also grow with the adjusted bandwidth. Remember the time where you could install an entire OS from just 3 diskettes. . where you had a HD of 500 and something MB because the BIOS couldn't read above a certain cilinder because no one at that time thought it would be needed to have bigger disks then that.

So in 5 years you are all downloading with 4,35MB per sec .. and still waiting for 174 minutes to get the new Windows 2008-end-user-f*cked-up edition that has just downloaded 1,2 gig out of the 54 gig in it's totall installation .. ... ;D

Actually, I agree with the original poster. Mostly because a lot of companies don't host thier own patches anymore. I shouldn't have to wait in line or register with another website to obtain the bugfix on a game from another company. I shouldn't have to be subjected to advertisments every step of the way either.

Imagine if you went into a local store and got the same response?

YOU: "Yes, I would like to exchanges this, it seems to be broken"

STORE CLERK #1: "If you would like to exchange this, you need to go acrosss the street to the other store. Would you like a trial subscription to a magazine or pay to play a game before you go?"

YOU: "Uh... no..."

[ACROSS THE STREET]

YOU: "Yes, I would like to exchanges this, it seems to be broken"

STORE CLERK #2: "Before you can exchange this item, you need to fill out this form with your address giving us permission to send advertisements to you in the mail."

YOU: "Uh... okay..."

STORE CLERK #2: "Now, if you would like to exchange this now, you can pay us $20 a month for our services, or you can wait in line a couple of hours..."

YOU: "Umm... I'll wait..."

STORE CLERK #2: "Would you like to buy the latest PC game while you wait? Maybe you would prefer to have a nice cheesburger? No? How about seeing the latest movie? Would you like to win a million dollars? Earn money now, while you wait, all you have to do is give us all of your personal information and let us watch you 24 hours a day! You still have 1 hour and 59 minutes left to wait, or you could pay for our premium exchange service and go straigh to the front desk with no wait!"

YOU: [sHOOTS HIMSELF]

It's pretty damn ridiculous...

I mean, it's one thing to have a sponsored site and hosted downloads, it's another to have to run a greed guanlet!

Remember the time where you could install an entire OS from just 3 diskettes.

I remember when they fit and ran on a single 5 1/2" floppy... that was actually floppy...

They have to pay for the bandwidth costs you know, and if there were so many people downloading things this would serieusly stress the server, too many people downloading and the server crashes.

Bandwidth isn't cheap either, if i'm right they would need atleast 1GB/30 minutes.

Products cost money you know. In the outside world, when a company fails to accomplish a contract on time, or sells defective merchandise, they swallow the expense of repairs and completion. It's the cost of doing business.

Besides, wasn't the 3

However, I think maybe we should all charge the companies for using our bandwidth, electricity, disk cache, and monitor space to view their banner ads. Those things are used at our expense, and normally without our concent.

When you buy a certain software packedge you will [ or can ] know infront that there will be additionall costs involved into using it after that. Same thing with the online referances you mentioned. If you know they are going to use your disk cache without you liking it. Don't go there. If you don't want to look at any of the things they place on your screen, don't put yourself in the position where they can do that. Nothing keeps you from starting your own network where those things are obsolete.

It might sound hard and a bit cruel, but it's called society. People and the things around you just don't obey to your rules or expectations of them. If you don't like any of the products, the side effects of them or the price you have to pay for them. Don't use them. Unlike some might think, you have a choise into using them. Not like the commecials tend to make you believe that you can't do without.

[ remember mr. Jobs .. Apples CEO. He managed to do his job with minimall use of a computer. . even had paper on his desk instead of an computer or macintosh ;) ]

Just because you've bought a game doesn't mean that you should get everything associated to it for free as "you've already payed $40 for it."

GameSpy offers a free matching service and i don't think they get anything in return, money from the developers, nothing and they are the ones with the bandwidth bill.

ken, what you've just said here is one of the biggest crocks of crap i've ever seen in my life

what gamespy "gets" with every account that is signed up, is your email address, home address, name, home phone number, and every single other piece of personal info they require of you before you can "play" on their network. they sell this information to millions of evil companies who will now ensure the email address you gave to gamespy is spammed for all eternity by several thousand different spamming companies (who in turn, sell your email address yet again to other spam companies and so the cycle goes). of course, they also sell your address information to junk mail companies who will send crap to your home via the postage system, and telemarketing scam companies like the ones you see on the news who rob people out of their life savings.

all these things which can make your life Hell, is what gamespy does to all it's "customers" in order to profit

Navaros, it isn't my fault that you forget to TICK THE LITTLE BOX that said: "allow third party companies to send me special offers etc."
