TMA_1 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 ::)hmmm... I hate these things! lol I just think that if you cant express sarcasm without visual aids than you shouldnt use sarcasm at all. I mean its like having a flashback of highschool where all the girls would roll their eyes. geesh its annoying.lol they need to be destroyed.this is a rant. And it itself is annoying. But its true.lol
sneezer3 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 I think it can be used both ways. as if your happy of what your read and going to do it as well. ::)
Inoculator9 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 I think I agree, if you need a visual aid to get your sarcasm across then you shouldn't have tried in the first place, lol.
exatreide Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 shesh tma your topics never cease to amaze me.. ::) :)
Vanguard3000 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Ooh! Yes, what an insightful post! I am enlightened! TMA, you will be our new God!How's that for sarcasm? ;D
SurlyPIG Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 If you hate them so much why don't you just net block the GIF file they come from?...
rogue1896 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 opinionated my arse. you just like to complain. lol TMA. i'm just joking around with you. (heh, arse.)
Vanguard3000 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 You just like to complain.Who doesn't? :D
Anathema Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 You are truly the most productive ranter around here since Navaros left. lolNavaros Light
SurlyPIG Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 This isn't productive, this is incessant. With a few clicks of the mouse he could literally be done away with the ::) forever.Yeesh, some people... ::) ::) ::) ;D
nemafakei Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 There are some people on this forum who can't understand when something is sarcasm, even when it is incredibly obvious... perhaps the rolling eyes are for those people.
Inoculator9 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Yeah, I suppose it's just to be considerate.
Acriku Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Also it should be only used by people who know what it means! Like that Friends episode where Joey didn't know what the quote marks gesture meant, so he said "thank you" with quote marks. ;)
SurlyPIG Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Who says ::) has to mean sarcasm? I use ::) do display exasperation, and sometimes even mockary.
TMA_1 Posted February 2, 2003 Author Posted February 2, 2003 so you cant express that well enough for people to understand?
Nyarlathotep Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 They could be used to make a comment more clear. As for sarcasm, not everyone might understand a sarcastic remark, just due to the fact English is not their mother tongue. Remember, things are far more easy when you look someone in the face as you can see their expression. I think the smileys in general are a good way to make things more clear. I even think we should have more smileys here
Vanguard3000 Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Funny you should say that, Nyarlathotep, because:[shameless plug]http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/index.htmlMy homepage. :D[/shameless plug]
SurlyPIG Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Exactly. Nyar is absolutely right. Tonnes of people on this board are speaking English as their second or third language. Sarcasm could fly right over their heads! It's a method of irony, and figures of speech are an advanced part of the English language. If you wish someone good luck by saying "break a leg", and they don't know much English, they'll be like "Remove the Q-tip when you feel pressure man."
Acriku Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 My only quarry with it is that some use it with a different meaning to it, and it would piss off someone who thinks it means something else. Ambiguity kills :)
TMA_1 Posted February 2, 2003 Author Posted February 2, 2003 have you ever seen lowzeewee or golden eagle though? geesh. and some people just use sarcasm smilies as a form of pathetic attack. geesho weesho.lol
Nyarlathotep Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Funny you should say that, Nyarlathotep, because:[shameless plug]http://community.the-underdogs.org/smiley/index.htmlMy homepage. :D[/shameless plug]LOL, there are some funny ones in there, thanks
Inoculator9 Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 I don't really know what goldeagle did ??? but lowzee for sure, lol. And the smilies are there to be considerate to those who don't speak english particularly well. Fed2k would probably have less members and posts if there weren't any smilies.
