I've been looking through the boards and the topics over the past few months and I'm ...disappointed... to see that so many of us are getting so worked up about religious matters. Every time a topic is locked or lost another opens and sooner or later people start to either flame each other or preach their beliefs. There are exceptions to this; Edric, Nema, and some others are handling themselves very maturely.

But why are a select...few...spending so much time arguing about matters that they cannot prove, with people that will never believe them? It can't be very healthy for the community to have all this verbal violence.

I have a friend who is an athiest. Not because she has any particuar problem with theology, but because religion has caused so much violence throughout history. I once had a competition with her to name a war that had no religion in it at all. The closest I got was World War One, and I'm sure there was some in there somewhere.

I'm not saying that religion is a bad thing, that's not for me to judge. I'm asking in what I hope is a manner that people will find unoffensive (no swearing, insulting, caps, angry yellow faces, etc) if we can possibly keep it to ourselves a little bit more?

Please?

Buddy, you are entering a mine field.

Such topics might be dangerous 'cause some people will forever be radicals. They will never accept another opinion. ( Enither they are religious or atheist.)

Therefore it is for you to accept their way of expressing themselves.

It is for you to accept them as they are in order to avoid ugly situations ( see history :) ).

I can't say if it was religion or intolerance that caused all that suffering, but I know that each of us as an individual can fight against it by trying to understand the others, even if they cross the line.

OK?

:)

I'm certainly walking on eggshells... Boy it's one metaphor after another isn't it?

Yes, this topic is dangerous. But I'm trying really hard to keep it clean this time. I don't mind people expressing themselves, if only they wouldn't do it so violently and nastily towards each other.

I can accept opinions, that's ok. It's fights I'd like to avoid. If people argued this much about sport then the topic would be that.

Hey, I'm noy against you.

It's nice that you're trying to mediate things.

I wish you luck.

Thank you very much. I have a dreadful feeling I'll need it...

The most important thing is respect.

If you have the sense of respect then you'll be able to accept his/hers point of view. You don't have to agrre that. You only accept it, if disagree it, then you'll be able to say what you think in a calm and friendly way.

Some thing like: "I do not agrre. I think this might be a better idea: ..... etc." - to be more clear.

ahh people have a right to discuss what is on their minds. If the powers that be dont like it, they will shut it down. All people have biased opinions, some just dont have them in religion. Some do in the negative realm of religion and some positive. Your idea is not new, and every single person in the religious thread has shown some of their immaturity. everybody. Imperfection is much more visible than peopel think it is.

I would agree that it is stupid, i though about posting a thread about it myself. What is the world is the point of debates when everone is going to stick with what they belive Regardless and not keep an open mind? And most arguementsCan be proven.

I know, and that is a flaw of man not a flaw of God. Reilgion is basicly Mans attempt to Reach God and it is hopeless. but i see your freinds logic. :)

I tottely agree with you. I never have (to my memory) done that.

If you catch me doing that let me know. ::)

I don't think not changing an opinion or a belief means that you don't have an open mind.

It depends. what imean is like if something is proven wrong and you still stick with it because it is what you where tought or raised to belive. or just becase thats what you belive. that is what i was reffering to anyway.

Well, there isn't much of a difference if you examine it correctly. Your raised with something and it becomes a part of you, or you spend your life searching for something and when you find it it becomes a part of you. Does it matter how you come to your opinions?

Okay this is a hypothetical situation in response to what opinion do I hold on that question. Let's say I am raised a Christian, I am submitted to Church and Youth Group every Sunday. I am made to pray at least twice a day at home.

Then one day I discover this belief that has both God and Goddess, or multiple Gods and Goddesses. Paganism. Let's just say, that I decide to become a Pagan myself and devote myself to the Goddess.

Now, even though in the situation, I was raised Christian and it was a deep part of me, I found out about Paganism and became a devoted Pagan, thus it was a part of me to.

It doesn't matter how you come to your faith, is the illustration of my parable. Whether you are born into something, and it is reitterated over and over again until it is firmly a part of you, or if you just find it and decide to follow it. Its the same thing, it is your faith and your devotion, it is yours alone to give and to decide upon.

All that matters about how you came to your opinions is that you came to them.

Religion is more powerful that any politician.

If the religion says to go to war... or to hate somebody... then most people obey volontarely.

The rest of them obey because they are obliged.
