This was inspired by Empr's thread about the most lethal substance on the face of this earth. I am just curious if any of you guys know the number one of anything out there. Like the number one most venumous snake or the number one biggest flower and all those little tidbits that are interesting. post if you know any of "the most" things out there. :)

Most common toxic substance ingested by people eating "everyday/normal" food:

Aflotoxins.

Largest flower in the world:

Rafflesia

It looks and smells like rotting flesh to attract flies for pollination. I think it flowers once every 5 years, though I'm not sure about that.

Strongest naturally occuring object:

Diamond

I think it's a tetrahedral arrangement of carbon atoms. I was never good at Chemistry anyway. ::) :P

Most abundant naturally occuring substance on Earth:

Aluminium

That's all I can cook up for now. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Well if you want things that are the most...might I reccomend a show on the History Channel aptly entitled "The Most"? It does things that are the Most.

Such as The Fastest Gun in the world: The M-61 Vulcan at 6000 rounds a minute.

The Most from air forces:

most shot-downs (of enemies): Messerschmitt Bf 109 (over 6000 claimed, altough many on land; Grumman F6F Hellcats shoot down about 2500)

fastest fighter: MiG-25P (2900 kph or 3 M)

most quickly rising fighter: McDonnell Douglas F-15 (faster than Saturn V class rocket to 15 000 m height)

best weapon capacity/engine power divide: GD F-16C (GE110 power 110 kN, capacity 9275 kg)

mostly built aircraft: Iljusin Il-2 ("Sturmovik"; with Il-10 upgrade about 42 000 in 1940-1949)

mostly built jet aircraft: MiG-21 (24 000 in 1959-1976)

most powerful single plane (only type practically showed ;) ): Boeing B-29 Superfortress (6th august 1945, Hiroshima)

ahhh my specialty:

I'm not providing links to these, so you can either believe me or research them yourselves :)

Deadliest Snake: Tie between Inland Taipan and Black Mamba

though the venoms of the taipan ounce-per-ounce is more potent, the thing about both of these snakes is that there is no documented case of someone surviving a bite without treatment. In fact, there is a memorial to the guy who captured the first inland taipan in Australia for the purposes of developing an antivenin- he was bit in the leg while capturing it, and of course, died. Months later they finally developed an antivenin. If we rate the deadliest snake according to "Which snake, if bitten by, will result in your certain death unless treated", then its the black mamba and/or Inland taipan. Now neither of these snakes kill that many people because they are shy and located in remote areas. If we go by "which snake has the most kills annually" - even though you can survive a bite untreated, the record goes to the Saw-Scaled viper (it kills so much because they live near human villages)

Deadliest creature on earth (deadlier than any snake): Chironex Fleckeri, also called the Sea Wasp. You come in contact with this- unless you have very rapid medical attention, 2 things will happen: #1) You will die, #2) You will die most painfully. The unbearable pain of getting stung by this is so intense that people have been cited writhing on the beach, screaming while rubbing their skin off with sand- literally flailing themselves alive. When death comes, the pain is finally gone.

Most painful non-lethal envenomation: Probably goes to the duckbill platypus. If you read some of the accounts of a platypus sting, you will begin to wonder "how does a human body generate so much pain?" UNless you enjoy the sensation of unbearable pain, if you ever see a platypus, dont reach out to pet it.

Deadliest Spider: Tree-dwelling Funnel Web.

Deadliest Insect: Mosquito (for the diseases they carry)

Deadliest Curable Disease: Rabies has a 100% mortality rate if untreated. It amazed even me that there is no documented case of someone surviving rabies without treatment. Someone can double check this.

Deadliest Fish: Stone Fish

The Cutest Deadliest Creature in the World: Blue-ringed octopus

molluscs1.jpg

ahhhh....so pretty! Measuring at just a few inches when fully grown, its head the size of a golf-ball, this tiny creature that could fit in the palm your hand, is actually one of the top 10 deadliest creatures in the world. When its rings glow bright blue, that means that it is not very happy, and is ready to bite. Uh oh, you are now ready to die. Oh, I am sorry, did I forget to mention that there is no antidote? Be careful before you pick up a cute, colorful 'lil sea creature.

more on the amazing blue-ringed octopus:

First you will feel nauseous. Your vision becomes hazy. Within seconds you are blind. You loose your sense of touch. You cannot speak or swallow. Three minutes later you are paralysed and unable to breath.

You knew that the blue-ringed octopus is extremely poisonous but how were you to know that this was one when its tiny parrot-like beak bit through your wetsuit. The last thing the victim sees are the blue rings - visible only when it is about to attack.

The blue-ringed octopus is the size of a golf ball but its poison is powerful enough to kill an adult human in minutes. There's no known antidote. The only treatment is hours of heart massage and artificial respiration until the poison has worked its way out of your system.

a little known fact about the Blue Ringed Octopus (and this also applies to black mamba bites)- they use paralyzing venom that only attacks your nerve receptors. The victim is fully conscious, and aware, but unable to move or breathe (total muscle paralysis).

many people have died needlessly because someone else who was with them did not know what to do. All you need to do is give them CPR for about 24 hours, and there is actually a good chance that the victim will recover. The venom does not actually damage tissue- it only causes paralysis. Victims die because they are unable to breathe- which is why CPR continuously for 1 or maybe 2 days can actually save them. But imagine lying totally paralyzed, unable to move, yet you can hear, see (cant move your eyes, though) and think clearly. Utter horror

Heres another most:

Deadliest Mammal: The Hippopatumus. Infamous in Africa for killing more people than any other mammal. And you thought they feared lions? Ha!

Um actually the deadliest mammal is probably us. Capable of destroying the whle world in a matter of miutes - that's hard to beat!

Hehe, whith the help of tools, yes. But we are extremely weak without the help of technology.

You can always teach the ape to press a red button and destroy the world rendering the apes just as dangerous as us humans ;)

Sadly, humans have a need to destruct, which you don't find in most animals.

(dogs have a tendency to rip apart pillows and such...)

I have both animal planet and discovery. Discovery is my fav channel. Anyone seen that guy building a chopper?

I love science related tv programs, but tend to switch channels at the boring crime nights...

We just recently got national geographics channel. I believe that's good too but I haven't watched it yet

You can teach an ape to press a button, but you cannot teach him how to make the nuke, and all of the technology included in the whole process. That is why we are #1! Woo #1!

The most lethal disease:

AIDS

The most common disease:

Common cold ;D

The deadliest weapon constructed by human hands:

Russian thermonuclear bomb, 100 Megaton

The event that killed the most people ever:

The pandemic of the Black plague in the 14th century

Diamonds are the *hardest* naturally occuring substance, not *strongest* (ask another engineer besides me; they will tell you why).

I think the most abundant element is silicone.

The longest range for a tank kill is 4500metres, made by a British Challenger.

I could go on, but... I'm lazy, sorry ::)
