is space just a vacuum?

Is space just what it is called? empty space? I have heard different from many people. bring in scientific theory here. I would like to hear it. Sources would be good as well.

Well there's a lot of dust in space, but there's plenty of room.

What else could it be? People used to believe space was solid because it was supposedly the only way light could travel through it, but nobody believes that anymore.

There's no air though so if you would go to space and take off your suit you would explode since your blood will just push from inside out and there's no air to push the other way... so you would grow bigger and bigger until you explode 8)

anyone care to try?

Even things that are 'nothing' (don't have weight) Something Newton doesn't make clear in his theories.

Weight is relative to a point of gravity. Sun has no weight. Better use "mass" or something like it. Newton was very limited by astronomy of those days. Gravity was then explained too naturaly. Einstein's teories are best for understanding "weight". But I prefer superstring teory. It's much more opened.

yeah i agree, mass is a much better word to use. Weight is too relative

Space is something that is interesting. Lack of heat. Lack of light. Lack of gravity. But it is no perfect vacuum. We haven't found a perfect vacuum yet, but space is close. It contains stranded molecules, very very few air molecules, and other particles/molecules.

I said lack of, not total lack of ;) The only light in space is that emitted from stars, same with heat (although the heat may come from an alternate source, don't know which).

What is hanging in your ceiling?

A lamp! Not all light comes from stars. Some of it comes from lightsources on earth.

And maybe other planets who like light :)

What light source is big enough to emit light waves/particles out into space? The light reflecting from the sun showing the planet in its blue sexiness is nice.

It's really amazing that humans actually have been in space. I mean, all of those radiation and ultra violet lights that shines directly from the sun and stuff...

Anyways, if you would somehow lighten up Earth trough the use of powerful lamps, they would sooner or later go out because of the energy use. This would mean that if we somehow managed to turn our planet into a "sun", civilizations would still only see a tiny blip, if anything at all, because of the distanse. Also, remember the universe is constantly moving. Nothing will ever be still.

yes, if the Big Bang theory is right then we are destined to die anyway.. i mean everything has a beginning and an end.. but if that theory is right.. that means that all mass in the universe will become one huge ball again... and explode turning into billions of stars planets and stuff... new species will start living (i think) and this goes on till eternity

I don't know how you wanted to aim with that. But with fold space I didn't mean like in Dune.

And the earth is not heavy enough to make an noticable folding

Don't think space is even close to a vacuum. Unless with vacuum you mean "without air". Then it could come close.

But there are lot's and lot's of particles out there. [ if they exists that is. ] like gravitons, strings, light [ well, is some way there is ;) ].

There is a theory that if you could make a vacuum inside a compleately closed sphere, that inside that sphere would be compleat nothingness. [ but then vaccum is not just without air but also without "everything" ]

Space and time would not excists within that sphere. Accordign to the theory that is. ;)

About the creation and the big bang .. . .

Almost al debates about that whould end up without a specific conclusion.

Religion and science are going to be drawn together for a long time trying to figure out the philosophical implications of why the univers turned out favorable to us.

[ but then who claims we are even important in this univers ? ]

Oh, and what did Einstein think about this issue ?

He said "science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind".
