You don't know what's Christmas? It's about Jesus' birthday and christians. Four sundays before 25th december. Some specifical traditions were hold, like St.Nicolaus' fest (in catholic countries, Santa comes on 6th december, and we have enough on Christmas too! ;D ) or other. I'm trying to bring Christmas atmosphere on this poll.

I hope you won't think about it as spam ;)

Some guy who said 'Be nice to people' was born some time ago, and it happens to be 25 days before it is cusstomary for his worshippers to celebrate him. Oh, wow.

...And was then nailed to a tree for suggesting that maybe being nice to people was a good idea.

(Or at least that's what's SUPPOSED to have happened...)

Please, don't spam. This thread is not about who Jesus was and how he ended. At least write about his birth, when this is about advent and Christmas. Return to topic.

Wow, you're in a cheerful mood today... ::)

These holidays are nearly 2000 years old. I don't think our greedy corporations were around back then, do you? ::)

What's wrong with celebrating?

Posted

Maybe it is still continued today because Jesus happened to be the Son of God? Just a thought... ::)

And tell me, what is worth celebrating in your most highly esteemed opinion? ::)

Since it is here because Jesus is the Son of God, then why is the meaning of Christmas changed over the years to nothing but a money-spending gift-receiving eggnog-plenty holiday?

Since you think so highly of my opinion, I shall grant you an answer. Any holiday that gets people together to enjoy their lives, pardoning holidays that have no meaning to me.

A very good point. I think we have our capitalist friends to thank for that...

I agree with you about this. Christmas is suffering from over-comercialization and shallowness nowadays... :(

Christmas was initially a mid winter feast by "barbaric" non christians. The chrisitians took over the habit.

Btw, Santa Claus is a rip off from "Sinterklaas", practiced by the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany (I believe). The story is about a guy named Klaas (in spain) who secretly left money behind in a poor guys home so he didn't need to sell his daughter (or something like that). The guy found out who his saviour was, and that's how the holiday got its roots from.

Sint Klaas (Saint Klaas) became Sinterklaas. The story is that he comes to childrens homes on his december on 5th december (wich is actually his date of death, and its not even 5 but 6 december) and drops of presents to children who behaved.

Seems a lot like Santa Claus doesn't it ::)?

Yes, Christmas was a pagan holiday that Roman Emperor Constantine started around the 4th century C.E. to draw more of the populace into the church. Really that time of the year has nothing to do with Jesus' birth that time of the year would be too cold for sherpards to be in the fields. Still people could use it as a fesitval for gathering without all the misconception about what it really is about.
