A few days ago, I was chatting to someone and she called me a 'peach kiddo' According to her, if you go to Canada and say to someone: "You're a peach kiddo", they'll automatically give you a hug!! ??? To all you Canadian people in this forum, do you know anything about this? This is really weird stuff... :P

canadians have some messed up sayings. I went on this certain website that showed them all and I almost died laughing. Its like you go there and its a haven for people like me with corny, corny sayings.lol

Well, it is a common linguistic pheneomenon for isolated groups' languages to alter and develop phrases common only to the isolated area. Equally, it is common for languages in contact with others to become alike and develop bilingual phrases and loanwords.

lol nema... We know you are intelligent. You dont have to prove it to people that go on this site all the time. We are pretty smart too peach kiddo.lol

I'd tell you, but then I'd have to sacrifice you to the Canadian God.

In a related note, he redesigned his teams hockey jersey this year. Anyone see the new design?

*Slowly nods his head to Lost_child.

You couldn't hapen to tell me the name and location of this person who used this term, could you? I'd just like to know for... census information, yeah that'll work. Census information....

Heh, I've never heard of it. The only explanation I can think of is what Acriku said...there's no set system that says peach kiddo = hug.

It's kind of like the expression eh. Everyone thinks we say it every second word, but we don't. I hardly EVER say it. In fact the ONLY time I say it is when I'm BSing ignorant Americans...

I once got a university student in Arizona to believe that I took a dogsled to school, and that to use the internet I had to take the snowmobile 3 towns to an ice building called the "Techgloo". ::)

lol. In the process of trying to simply say "localized variations in dialect are common " Nema himself invents a new dialect.

lol that was funny. we get an explanation AND a demonstration. haha

maybe i should start a contest.

Who can rephrase the sentence "The cat ran up the tree" in the most complex fashion? The one who rephrases that sentence using the most words with the most syllables wins.

Anyone want to begin?

I think it is more people in the southern states that have those ideas. For example a fairly popular segment on a weekly show here called talking to Americans always seems to find Americans with odd views about Canada. Examples from another sites top 10:

10) In Chicago: "Congratulations Canada on having running water in all five states."

9) In Washington, D.C.: "Congratulations Canada on your first national railroad."

8) In Washington, D.C.: "Congratulations Canada on 268 consecutive days of snow."

7) At Harvard: "Yes, I believe the seal slaughter should be stopped in Saskatchewan."

6) In Chicago: "Congratulations Canada on making Beaver Balls your national dish."

5) At Mount Rushmore: "Congratulations Canada, our Eskimo neighbours to the South, on your new Mount Mulroneyuk."

4) Governor of Arkansas: "Congratulations Canada on preserving your national igloo."

3) In New York: "Yes, I think Jean Chretien-Pinochet should be charged with crimes against humanity."

2) In New York: "Yes, I think it is time to bomb Gilles Duceppe."

1) Texas Governor George W. Bush: I'm glad to have the support of Prime Minister Jean 'Poutine.'

...article about the show

I think we like to poke fun at the US because they know so little about anything but the US, ok ok we just like to make it look that way. :)

well i wont deny that the US has its share of morons, but I challenge the veracity of Rick Mercer's quotes. The guy is a comedian doing a comedic show. You would have to seriously look to find people that dumb, I know I haven't met them, well maybe I have, but never have I heard anyone say something so stupid about Canada and mean it seriously. Guys like Jay Leno do the same thing as Rick Mercer: you search around until you find an idiot. And then if you are desperate, you try to "lure" them into some kind of stupid trap in a deliberate attempt to make them look foolish (precisely what Mercer does) so people are baited to begin with (this form of cooersion that Mercer in particular does is dishonorable). Yes, I know there are plenty of dumb people there, but if I had a list of stupid things, I would list this as one:

"The canadian view that most americans believe stupid cliche's about canada"

that would be #1 on my list. ;D

"The cat ran up the tree"

The quadruped feline observed the vital need to acquire higer ground and took action by using its nervous and muscular systems to set its limbs into motion. It then positioned itself to face a tree and used its claws to move upwards on the trunk of said tree. Then, once it reached an adequate height, the feline stopped this motion.

So, what did I win? ;D

Off-topic and for emprworm only:

[hide]Emprworm, why do you keep shutting people off in a rude way when you no longer what to argue with them? I wasn't offended, but someone might... Anyway, please let me at least IM you a few last words. No more arguments, I promise. You know... there was no need to overreact like that.[/hide]

[hide]<|No. That old discussion is over.|>[/hide]

Edric O, are you trying to get my topic thrown into Gob's Dungeon? I'd appreciate it if people would stick to the topic. How did this thread get so warped while I was away anyway? :(

<|Don't worry. Such itemss can easily be removed.|>

So, basically a 'peach kiddo' is just an expression is it? It doesn't mean anything serious? What is the overall meaning of it (if it has one at all)? Could it be an expression of affection, or a subtle hint that the person that said it to me thinks I am a moron? :P Any other possibilities as to what this expression could mean?

NOTE: If I see another post in my topic that is off topic, this thread is as good as finished. I'm sick to death of people ruining my threads with non topic related discussion. :(

Instigator are we TMA_1? I was hoping I wouldn't get an immature response like that. Since you did it on purpose it doesn't count. ::)

Now back on topic please. ;D
