i was sitting around, and watching science channel, when they said the universe goes on forever.

so i thought for a while, and came to the conclusion that any thing anyone thinks of is out there somewhere in infinity, which means technically there is no such thing as fiction, and that anything it has to be true because ther universe goes on forever ;D

But can the universe go far enough so that everything changes? No mere measurement will reverse gravity, I suspect.

Though the idea of a planet spontaneously exploding because it reaches the other side of the universe is amusing...

In his book "Hyperspace," Michio Kaku hypothesized that the universe is really just spherical in multiple dimensions, and any matter reaching one edge of the universe will simply pop into existance on the other side of the universe.  Kinda like games where your fighter goes off the screen on one side of the moniter and pops back on the screen on the other simultaneously (there's an old DOS-based fighter-plane simulator that does this, though I can't remember the name).  Of course, the universe is SO FREAKING HUGE that it's doubtful that we'll ever know for sure.

As far as all fiction being true; that's something I have no doubt about.  I think that imagination is how multiple universes come into being.  IDIC:  Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. smiley_Spock.jpg

One thing that is certain is that the laws of physics are the same throughout the entire universe. So any fiction that defies the laws of physics could not possibly happen, even if the universe is infinite.

But the universe is not infinite, at least not in terms of mass (there could be infinite empty space, but that is not particularly interesting). If the universe had infinite mass, there would be an infinitely powerful force of gravity at every single point. The universe would immediately collapse in on itself.

Yeah... careful how you're using it. Our laws of physics break down as we approach the Big Bang. There are universal laws of physics, but the way they work make them look anything but universal.

I gathered he meant that there would be infinite otherverses, ranging with all possible combinations of events, and therefore anything that can be thought up by the human imagination (i.e. fiction) is not really fiction somewhere in another verse.

It doesn't work that way, firstly because not everything imagined by human beings follows the laws of physics and secondly because the mass of the universe cannot be infinite.

I imagine that there is a place where twenty inside-out suns orbit a small ferret, who wears a hat and can travel through time.

That was a very good catch, never thought of that. Based on that alone, I no longer believe the theory.

lol welllll if you think about it you cant beleive anything anyone says to be fact because we have such a poor understanding of the universe, and technically the laws of physics are simpally something that we imply is true, though with such limited knowledge as are, we will never no wether or not there true.

If it is a real theory, physicists would have already made attempts to resolve the dichotomy between the theory and the laws of physics.

And there is no response. Thus, it's an idea, not a theory.

Nice one Low 8)

heh, similar to what you were thinking about Lord Vernius, I remember thinking that our minds are limited to those things that have a probability of happening. We are thinking beings inside this universe, therefore our thoughts are rooted in probabilities because all thoughts are limited to things that have a potential of happening in the universe that we comprehend. I remember this because I had this idea when I first read Dune way back in the day when I was 14. I remember thinking that Arrakis could very well exist because my thoughts created it. If I thought of it, then it must have some sort of probable reality. Anyways cool stuff. :) it is always cool to think of these things, keeps us from a bland existance.

a theory is an umproven idea

Actually, in science-talk, an unproven idea is called a hypothesis. A theory is an idea that has a lot of evidence supporting it, but still can't be said to be 100% proven.

Yes, I thought exactly about that too, but never really got around thinking too much about it. I DID think of the multiple universes thing though, that in one universe I'm sitting here and typing this post while in another universe, I'm carrying a cleaver and looking for human meat.

That's about possibilities. To link it to minds is to dismiss the laws of Physics anyway, and that catch by Edric O kind of made me doubt the possibility of my mind being linked to the universe.
