Skill to me means a having very good eye hand coordination or whatever part of the body is needed to fulfill that particular sport. In my opinion there is no great eye hand coordination required to play this game. However if you would like to compare it to Chess go ahead. Because the 2 involve alot of strategy. But using strategy doesn't make it a sport Chess is still just a game. Granted a game that is definately played at the professional level but a game none the less. I say this because there is no physical prowess needed to play it. Goilf which you(Spicy) lumped in with board games is definately a sport. Anyone who has ever played the game would attest it requires the most accurate of eye hand coordination of just about any sport out there. And have you ever wlaked 18 holes carrying your clubs on a 100 degree day? I would say that definately qualifies as exertion. Granted pros have theirs carried for them by their caddies but it is still a game that requires a great deal of skill. As far as my skills at playing emp...LOL. I just try and make it to the end of the game without dying. No great skill involved there.

No hand eye coordination (EHC - from now on, I am lazy)? what the hell ? you people joking ?

Maybe you guys havent seen people who have no EHC trying to use word is Mission Impossible for them. This game, like using a computer well in general requires good EHC.

Could you get your grandma, who hasnt ever used a computer, to watch you play a computer game for say a yeah, then give her the controls and ask her to do as well as you ? she would need to delevope the EHC. She would fall flat on her face.

How much EHC is really needed to click and drag a mouse? As far as using the keyboard...well I still suck at typing. I type at most about 40 WPM. And that's if I'm looking at the keys while I type! I would say I am at least average inb this game if not a little above average. So for me to have little to no EHC and still play descent proves my point. What your talking about with the grandma isn't really EHC anyways. It's motor skills. And yes the people who use computers on a regular basis have developed the necessary motor skills to be competent on a keyboard. Hell I'm 40 yrs old and my kids type as good as me if not better. Does than mean they have better EHC than me? I don't think so. It just means they have developed those particular motor skills required at an earlier age than me. Kepp in mind this is all just IMO.

My grandma makes excellent cookies filled with apricot jam. I would suggest she should stay in the kitchen instead :)

I would bet they do have better EHC then you, but then thats also to do with your age :P...

And call it what you will, it is the coordination that needs your hands to be where your eyes tell them, same for like when I play football (ok, thats feet, but same hoohaa) and badminton, and other sports, where the coordination is required between your eyes and limbs.

...And if you insist on calling it motor skills then fine, but it is still a skill.

its a sport for the mental and reflexise reaction side. just like chess or bawlling or pool.

errm.... this is nothing new. don't tell me none of you knew that gaming was considered a sport? CPL (Cyberathlete Professional League) and WCG (World Cyber Games) exist for quite some time now. and if you take a look at Korea... there are already enough gamers who get their money from gaming competitions, merchandise and public relations work. this isn't happening in europe or the us that much but over there in some asian countries these people are stars like popsingers or somewhat like this. it's mostly the starcraft, warcraft3 players who live over there. the quake/painkiller/counter-strike champs mostly come from other countries all over the world. btw: CPL World Tour Final takes place soon in New York :)

@ schorpie: actually it's called e-sports  ;)

and as I say this: ESL (Electronic Sports League) also exists for many years now and got the "sports" in it name since then.

you can get some infomation on these pages:

CPL -> www.thecpl.com

WCG -> www.worldcybergames.com

ESWC -> www.esworldcup.com

ESL -> www.esl-europe.net

I guess the whole esport thing came up with Quake CTF and DM (ever wondered why the biggest IRC network is called QuakeNet ;) ). I don't know when since when e-sports came up in asia, but for europe and the us it was about that time quake came out. But the real development was in the last few years with more and more sponsors to come into that "business", more organization, more professionalism and bigger prize-money.

I guess the great breaktrough will come over the next few years. MTV is making a coverage about the CPL World Tour Finals as far I know.

But as I said: that's nothing new in Asia. unfortunately I haven't got that article I once took from a magazine. it was a long report (about 15 pages) about the e-sports scene and pro-gaming in Korea & Japan.

  desertway  have defind sport in the thread, please raed the first page, i would like to add to desertway  defenition that sport can be split into 2 kinds. sport for the budy and sport for the mind.  the budy sport is to train your mussels and cardio bascular ..ec the mind sports is to

  make mental effort that consum energy in a positive way like playe word games or bingo or chess

and pc games.. that mental effort train ure reflexive and memory and make you lose some extra tention because playing in general is good for the health and fun.

i think guys here are too lazy and just when they hear the word sport they freaked out and went

sewaring at me.ok guys cool down its not a sport please come back to ra server .lol  :-X

gaming is a sport. any kind of playing any game is good for the health . kids who dont playe get

depressed and then sick. olso older peapol needs to play.

  games are sport to the mind and reflexive moves, and some games like emp even requier  some

real hard core movment. des when i playe emp i dont just click the mouse.thats what nobs do! i click the mouse when am reading my email. at emp i attack and deffend, forowerd and back movment i move my hands and budy for hours in 1 single game, and after i feel tierd and hungree. am not saying that you should playe games and not do ure workout. but playing a game is not like watching tv. i have seen players that are trying to learn this game for years and still they dont have the speed for it.

so now we can end this argument like this:

1_ there is a group including me think mind sports exisit. and playing in general is a type of spiratual sport

2_ there is a group think sport is only at the staduim

2_ there a group who hates the word sport so mutch and dont like to hear it even thou they like gaming but they dont want to hear the word sport coz it make them nurvise.

  so eatch on of us can stop trying to convince the other and we can just channel our selfs in those 3 categoryes.

i dont want to lock the post but if u dont have anything new to say please i think enough said.

thank you all.
