If they had captured a soldier instead of a civilian, it would have been better looking for the terrorists (since coalition is killing Iraqi soldiers). But if american civilians are willing to go to a country that U.S. is at war with, then they should know the risk of capture and/or death.

Nope, your throat would be cut, and you wouldn't be able to scream.

Then they should have done that on the video instead of the current way. ... :P

Being polite is a good standard. Morality isn't so important.

If you keept acting without morals for a continues time, you will need to have lot of other values for those persones else they will start ignoring you. If you act without being polity but people notice you have respectable moral standards, they will help you to be polite. . .

I don't see what's the real big deal around here. People are hugely shocked by this. And although i have not watched the movie (i'm not a thrillseeker) I find that too many people overreact.

Yes, a beheading (in our time) is a rather barbaric thing to do. BUT people are only so shocked because it was all over the news. On many places in the world people are killed in way freakier ways than this. Yet noone cares about that because they can't see it. As long as you don't know who it was, it's merely a number for you.

Example: I thought, 800 american deaths in Iraq, sad but statistically seen not a huge number or anything. Now that i checked that website with all those pics and some info(link can be found in the PRP board) 800 people seem like a whole lot to me. Because every single one of them had a life, build up a home etc. and it was taken away from them.

It is not realy something that you should joke about. But also not anything that we should make such a huge point about. Much worse than this happens on other places in the world.. i can't remember exactly but somewhere in africa, a few weeks ago 2 african tribes slaugered each other, woman and children with knives in ways WAY worse than this beheading.

I like the idea of these "Modern Gladiotoral Events"! We could pit George Bush Jr against Kerry! :D

isn't there a celebrity deathmatch for that ?

I find every death I see or hear about tragic, and that the various news station use them to get the story of the month and entertain the publice makes me even more sick.

Offcourse people get sick when they see killing *live* (some people) We should have evolved from the Roman ages, if we lived under the same rules as they did it would be perfectly ok if your father killed you.

These are human lives we're talking about not movies and fiction. I know about the african slaughters, I've seen programs where small boys younger than my littlebrother speak about how they cut up innocent women and children and it horrified me.

I can't help but have these feelings when I see or hear about a fellow human being killed, I get the same feeling when I see animals killed, just for the fun of it.

If people sees this as entertaining and like to have gladiatorial deathmatches I suggest them to start up Ultimate Fighting, and IMO their brain must be the size of a neanderthal's.

And Rene, I don't see it as a luxury, I see it as compassion to your fellow man.

But is it a beneficial thing? Not having empathy would make a lot of actions easier.

I wouldn't say 'evolved' because that implies that we are somehow better than the romans. I'd say 'developed,' because that can happen in both a negative and positive direction.

Evolved or evolution doesn't mean things are better then other things. . it means things have changed, better put.. that things have adapted by influances of their surroundings during the years. It doesn't imply things or persones are better then others.

Ordinarily yes but that's not how he used it.

Basically, it's all very simple. Nick Berg's death was horror. That's what this topic is about. People are wandering off here.

The debate (as I currently see it) is about whether it was horror or not and the various arguments drawn on to prove either point...

It was horror. You're not going to convince me you enjoyed watching it.

Maybe for some it wasn't horror (as in getting sick), but certainly not enjoyable. That's where the discussion should end.

or not as you have interpreted it. . ..

During the years Wester civilisations have adapted and discarted violence in that way. They upto this day still havn't.

[ although nor you or I should argument on what NaMp ment with his comment ]

then to speak frankly, it's not about these little word games, it's about showing some compassion toward fellow humans. I know, it's just a persone who is death right now. Nothing more, and nothing less, but one of he great things of humanity is that we can have compassion for fellow humans [ unless you are a rasist, then you just have compassion for a certain group of fellow humans .. ]. And yes, compassion and emotions are primitive, . . just look at Star Trek . wouldn't we all want to be a Vulcan incapable of those primitive thought that just clutter our minds . . so we can react more cool in manners like these. ..

Death being horrible or not depends on your culture.

If the people who made this movie wanted to change things . .to really make a differance, they should have done this with all of their prisoners. Emagine one video having this effect. 80 video's will really have an impact in the Western world. . . so why kill all those inocent people without us knowing it when killing just a fraction of them and sending us the tapes will have a far greater impact. . . they don't do that.

Cause this tape was ment as a represaille, not an act of war.

And using humans as objects will for most people classify as an act of horror.

If for some, that doesn't sound horrible .. .well. . not all of us are perfect. ...

Personally I don't see the difference between nick berg's beheading and squashing a bug with my boot.

How about we make a thread about every person who died in the WTC attacks?

Just saying that this isn't really going anywhere.. quite funny to see how people are getting so fed up by this.

Nature killing itself. Wow what a total shock. I knew these things happend. Before and after I watched that video. Nothing has changed my view.
