sorry for responding so late guys.

Well it is complicated. It is a mystery/thriller/character study. I mean that is my opinion at least.

It is about a british journalist who lives in saigon during the early fifties during french occupation. It is about the power struggles and american involvement with these struggles. It starst out with a love triangle between the journalist, and a supposed medical aid worker between a native girl. Later in the story though you learn about a new dictitorial power rising under general T'he. Eventually you learn that the medical aid worker is actually apart of the OSS, or CIA as it would be later called. And he is covertly working with general t'he because he is against the french and the communists. It is really really good I suggest it to anybody who wants to see a really in depth and good movie.

Actually I think I've seen that, or at least some if it. Seemed like you'd enjoy it more if you knew the history of that time period.
