somebody set us up the bomb.

(CNN) -- Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was killed in an apparent airstrike by Israeli forces Monday morning as he was being driven from a mosque, Hamas and Palestinian security sources told CNN.

Five others were killed in the strike, sources said.

Yassin's car and the cars carrying his bodyguards were hit by three rockets as they left the mosque after prayers.

Thousands of angry Palestinians gathered around his minutes after the attack, calling for revenge against Israel.

In September, Yassin, who used a wheelchair, was lightly wounded in an Israeli missile strike in Gaza City. At the time he vowed "jihad will continue."

Thousands of Palestinian Hamas supporters marched through the streets in support of Yassin after the strike last year.

Yassin founded Hamas in 1987, during the Palestinian intifada. Hamas is a fundamentalist Islamic organization whose military wing, Izzedine al Qassam, has carried out attacks on Israeli civilian and military targets. The U.S. State Department and Israel consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

An Israeli court convicted Yassin in 1989 of ordering Hamas members to kidnap and kill two Israeli soldiers.

He was sentenced to life in prison, but was freed in 1997 under the terms of a deal arranged by the late King Hussein of Jordan, who asked Israel to release Yassin in exchange for two Israeli Mossad agents, who attempted to assassinate Khalid Mishaal, a Hamas leader in Jordan.

The Palestinian Authority has placed Yassin under house arrest on a number of occasions since his release, most recently in December, 2001, after a series of terror attacks that killed 25 Israelis.

That detention triggered demonstrations and clashes with Palestinian police.

Yassin was born in 1938 in what was then the British mandate of Palestine. His family became refugees in Gaza during the violence that followed Israel's creation in 1948.

On September 15, twin suicide bombings jointly claimed by Hamas and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades killed 10 people in the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

Immediately after the terrorist bombings, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon canceled a planned meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qorei.

The scheduled talks were an attempt to revive the so-called "road map" to Mideast peace.

The plan, backed by the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia, calls for steps by both sides aimed at ending the conflict and establishing an independent Palestinian state by 2005.

Yah! Now there will be more suicide bombers to avenge his death.

And we all know that he masterminds all the evil people to do evil actions. So killing him will stop the evil people.

So what... it's about a global movement now, not a group. I'm not able to say if this event helps by hindering the group or if it worsen things by fueling the movement.

My 2.3 cents (our currency gets higher so... :P)

Good.. i hope everyone one of them straps a bomb and runs across the border all at once.. so we can end it finally once and for all.

Even if they all die, there will be new people to take their place. Terrorism spreads through generations - father to son for example.

there is also secularism.... meaning eventually the sons will say screw the bombs... give me some liquor and strippers...muslim extremism cant last forever...

it will happen .. just a matter of time...

Nah man. These people believe that Jihad is what they should be doing, even though their own blessed prophet described Jihad as the nonviolent expansion of Islam.

Al Qaeda claims that many middle eastern countries are getting secular.. and  are losing their fervor.. which is pissing them off.. so i guess it will take a long time.. but eventually it will happen...

It happens to all religions.... you dont see Crusaders on horse back with swords drawn anymore do you?.... nope.. they are all downtown at the strip club now.

Apathetic secularism is inevitable.

So you're saying that maybe instead of organising all sorts of peace talk, perhaps we should provide enormous liquor shipments to the Palestinians?

Maybe you're right about the more developed countries like Egypt, but an impoverished population like the Palestinians won't lose their fanaticism soon, if ever.

Correct... they cannot afford the liquor or strippers yet.. thats why it hasnt had a chance to happen yet.... so we need to raise their standard of living first... and then insert the liquor and hookers.... then we wait for the seeds of peace to grow

How can you suicide bomb when your drunk and horny?  :P

Myabe it will help maybe it won't, it doesn't matter, this kind of actions should always be.

Al Qaeda represents the extreme of everything Islam, so because a fundamentalist terrorist organization doesn't think it's governments are doing enough because they aren't encouraging suicide bombings and declaring war on the western nations, doesn't mean we should take their claims of a calming region seriously.

And leo, killing Jasin was stupid. I personally think Sharon is intentionally trying to exasorbate the situation so that it ends clearly in his own favor, and the Palistinians are dea. Killing him has only made them madder, and more willing to blow themselves up. I support Israel, but not Sharon.

I think I agree with Inoc on that one. One of the reasons that this situation has gotten to this point is that the leadership of both sides really have other agendas besides peace. They want to win. They want to be the ones to achieve a victory over there "enemies". They also may even believe that "peace" cannot be accomplished, and, therefore, the next best thing is to make the situation end in the best possible manner for their factions specifically.

Hamas is no usual enemy. They want to destroy Israel, to erase it from map and part it into nearby arab countries. Here are no compromises available.

hence Israel cannot compromise? correct?

Israel is trying to negotiate with the Palestinians for years; we offered them more than they ever imagined we would. While they don

If someone points a pistol and threatens to shoot, there are only two alternatives: one which would lead him to shoot and other one which would prevent it. No place for compromises. Jasin was a terrorist, vicious person, which abused his charisma to persuade uneducated people to blow themselves for his own political ambitions. I don't want to judge him morally, but this guy was a criminal, an active threat to order. And that's purpose of any state to eliminate such.

Now Hamas hates US even more, and it's all because of Israel. Just think about it, a lot of Middle east countries and organizations hate US and Britain because of their support of Israel. In my opinion, they should be left alone to deal with their problems and all international support should be ceased immediately. But then again, I always thought Israel was the world's greatest mistake in the first place.

Jews have suffered from the holocaust so no one really comes down on them... they get a blank check to do what they want militarily...

however saying israel is a mistake means you dont feel that they should have a homeland?
