This is not ment to be some kind of petty argument on the meaning of life, but right now, I am in serious doubt as to what the meaning of life is, if there even is one. I want to know what you guys think the point of life is.

May I ask that you dont start any kind of real heated debate, but if you wanna just discuss thoughts, thats cool.

Thanks everyone.

i don't believe in preset goals.... just like warskum said, each person defines his own goals. And i don't have 1 primary goal... i have many...

I'll go differently than Caid...

You must start by knowing who you are and where you are. From there, you'll know where to go. Ultimately, somehow, this will include if God exists or not.

I could resume it like the Greeks: Know who you are.

If it has to do with who you are, it's something to know if you want to know what to do, where to go, and what's the meaning of life.

So, where are you within all this and where do you wish to start?

As an individual or as a whole? As a whole, life (covering all species) is a vast network whose purpose (meaning?) is to survive. We might benifit from taking that to an individual level.

As individuals, our purpose (again, meaning?) is to reproduce and evolve and thus further the continuation of life. Which is itself just a convenient method of moving matter around.

Well, I am 18, and for the most part, I think I know who I am. It is just that the way everything works out in life right now, I really see no point in life. Things just overall suck, and the person that I feel like I am, does not fit into modern day life very well. I just don't care about life, or really anything in it.

This does really not reflect exactly what my mood is, but I dont know how to put into words what I am thinking.

And yes, Dust scout, I know the meaning of life as to the speicies is to survive, but I am more thinking, what is the point in surviving? Why should we care?

Actually, the "meaning of life" is whatever you want it to be. There is no such thing as an universal "meaning of life" that applies to everyone. The question should not be "What is the meaning of life?", but "What is the meaning of MY life?". And no one can answer that question for you. The meaning of your life is up to you to decide.

Ok, but that brings up the question: What is honorable? Is it honorable for me to tell someone the truth, even tho it causes them much pain and torture, or is it honorable for me to hold their hand and help them through their ordeal, or is it honorable for me to step back and let them learn for themself? WHat exactly is honor anymore?

The purpose of living, that is to live, is inherent in having a life.

here is the (my) definition of what is honourable to do:

Fight for justice

Enslave no other human

Be true to you word

Defend the weak, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Do not fight those weaker than yourself, unless they attack you, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Defend the interests of you people as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Speak only the truth, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Aid your kinsmen and friends, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Protect nature, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

Forgive and forget, as long as it does not conflict with the above-mentioned rules

it is infact my code of honour

I've mocked that code before... ;)

The meaning of life? Is that the same as the purpose of life? The purpose of an individual seems to be the same as the whole. To survive. By any means necessary.

For the millionth time: Each person makes his own purpose in life.

Surviving is usually a part of it, but I don't think I ever met anyone whose purpose in life was to merely stay alive. Or to reproduce, for that matter. This is the 21st century, for God's sake!

Posted

Well my purpose isn't to reproduce...

And I'm not so sure I like this 21st century. Besides, we're all human (mostly). There must be something we have in common.

The only logical solution I can find is that the only purpose of life is to live for the possibility of pleasure and enjoyment. Thus you should do whatever you can do have as much fun and to derive as much pleasure from whatever as you can.

lol I also don't like the 21st century

I belong in the future fighting space battles and eradicating alien species ;D :O 8) ::)

Nah. The past rocks.
