do you guys think that humanity will experience a major disaster before we can colonize other planets which sets us back several centuries in technology, or will be manage to build a large empire stretching across the galaxy, like in Dune??

If we are set back several centuries it is highly unlikely that we will recover since there is a lack of natural resouces which a civilization needs to be built.

I think that at this stage, humanity needs to achieve global unification, as a species. (Optimistic, I know :P). We probably won't ever reach the stage where we can colonize other planets very easily, until we resolve matters back at home. Either way, we'll have to face our problems on Earth eventually, and we may just inevitably destroy ourselves in the process, if we can't reach a global solution, as far as the environment and petty disagreements between countries are concerned.

Flee from falling Earth like with the "sleeper ships" as in Freelancer? Space colonisation is a very hard process and no one would do it unless he would have a particular reason to risk so much. Imperialistic way is too dear for it. But maybe once, when we'll find some good targets and a faster way to get there, it will be just a matter of time. I don't think it will be omnihominal thing, maybe if the wealthest countries will found common space agency.

it doesn't look very bright I guess since it ain't going very well with USA, which has the biggest potential of exploring space.

if the whole world got to be one large country then we could more easily explore space. if the EU becomes one nation, which consists of todays Europe then we would get closer to more advanced space technology.

mankind won't ever be colonizing other planets. the very idea is absurd. there are no other planets that can sustain human life en masse. ROFL

Hmmm...

1. Establish rotating orbital space station (not that international joke)

2. Establish Moon bases and mining facilities.

3. Reach Mars, map it.

4. Build rotating space station on Mars' orbit.

5. Build mines and Town on Mars (covered by glass bowls).

6. Terraform Mars.

7. Develop faster engines and start colonising Europa.

8. etc etc etc

Our future is out there. If we'll stay longer on earth we'll surely self-destruct.

Why do everyone think that everything is always impossible? If we made it to the moon, and soon Mars (2015-20 if I'm correct), then why is it not possible to reach other planets, and research new technologies in the future?

the only thing which is missing in the trip for mars is the space suit. It must be much more flexible than the one used on the moon. the gravity is somewhat the same as on earth so it has to be light too.

and if we reach a planet with a climate suited for humans then there might be another inteligent creature there. Let's hope not.

The problem is getting it there. And then what happens if something goes wrong? Its not like you can head down to your local Home Depot store to pickup supplies.

Prove it.

There is always possibility of terraforming. Many lifeforms live in high concentration CO2 and can change it to oxygen. With today's biotechnology I believe we can make Mars habitable in less than 1000 years. And when we'll be able to read DNA as book...

The whole point is that it can't be proven. Making blunt statements like that is pointless because neither they, nor their counter-arguments can be proven. A more logical answer would be "Evidence has led me to conclude-" and then going on to list viable reasons why of all the millions of planets out there, the vast majority of which we have never even noticed let alone seen or studied, could not sustain life.

Nothing can be proven. That's why I am so sceptical with all scientifical breaktroughs. When Newton came, there was no idea of Einstein.

The more dependent we become of technology, the more likely we will fall because of it.

As I always say, in a universe infinitely long, if it is possible it will happen.

Maybe some of you have heard this somewhere: "How do you proove we exist. Maybe we don't?".

"I think, therefore I am."

Posted

Precisely.

Frankly, I think we should really get ourselve sorted out before spreading out vile selves out to other places to mess about with them as well.

One my friend, registered here as Tenzul, told me about one philosopher which prime theory was "Nothing exists". He was arguing for it very succesfully. Here is science useless, here we can only believe...

"I think, therefore I am."

Look towards. There is a monitor. Does it exist? Does it think?

they can evacuate the planet. there must of course be a space shuttle there

I'd be impressed if we could all get in a space shuttle in time before something like a meteorite struck and we couldn't blow it up.

Devidu: But what about a terrorist attack? the glass would break and everything would be sucked out.

And what about a natural disaster? (i don't know mars's climate but there must be something like a huge earthquake happening once in awhile)
