A sad story./FBI screw up.

I was just looking at the news and reading that story about the man from Bristol, UK who went on holiday to South Africa with his wife (he is 72 I think) and got arrested by the FBI for fraud and put in jail in S.Africa for 3 weeks before the real fraudster gave himself up and they realised they had the wrong man.

There's something really tragic about an old couple saving up for a dream holiday and spending about a week on it and then the old man being put in prison in a foreign country for a crime he didnt even commit.

The poor old man was totally shaken and all upset on the news.

And the thing is he didnt even look like the guy they were after!

>:( :'(

I think they were going to exradite (is that the right word?) him.. i think they thought he was american... despite the fact he was from bristol...

Good that he didn't got the death penalty. That would be even worse.

:-X

Very depressing thought that. I doubt fraudsters get the death penalty often though.

Maybe not the death penalty but at least a good caning... at least the old man didnt get caned :-X

j/k though that is a bad case of mistaken identity.

What was the FBI doing in South Africa anyway? I assume that the fraudster had commited the crime in America and then fled, but wouldn't this be a case for the CIA then? And even then, they'd have no right to arrest him.

well, i know that the FBI is allowed to go to another country and arrest a person who is qualified as a "terrorist" and return him to the United States to go to trial

but i don't know about anything else... though if it was a serious enough crime it's possible, i did hear about the guy who was a "fraudster" and he traveled all over the world by acting as a pilot and he cashed faked checks by acting as a pilot and he also faked being a lawyer and a doctor, in fact they recently made a movie about him, as i bet at least some people have seen, it's called Catch me if you can , and he was finally arrested in France when the FBI caught up to him.
