Nyarlathotep Posted January 31, 2002 Author Posted January 31, 2002 Radar, try to find the Nvidia 22.80 drivers for your videocard. You probably already do, but close down all background programs.Try running the game with the option -s behind the games shortcut.btw, are you still in touch with Westwood tech support (meaning do they update you enough) ?"Doc" Nyar...
Guest lauden147 Posted January 31, 2002 Posted January 31, 2002 Nyar, that is correct. The install gets to 100 percent, but doesn't seem to finish. I just get kicked to desktop abruptly.
Guest redonblue Posted January 31, 2002 Posted January 31, 2002 Nyar......closed all programmes down.....& splash screen appeared then it disappeared then nothing..chkd CTL ALT DEL & nothing there except systray & explorer!Eventually managed to get the ~TEMP error back by starting game app in westwood folder...??I think i preferred it when the game started & then locked up!Westwood have apparently solved my problem by sending the tech support page on lockups & infernal errors..unfortunately their advice made absolutely no difference!Once again thanks for the interest in trying to solve this.cheers

Nyarlathotep Posted February 1, 2002 Author Posted February 1, 2002 Lauden, also check out this peace of FAQ (if you haven't done so already :)):First, delete all contents of your Windows Temp folder. You can do this by clicking Start, Search, Files and Folders, then type 'Temp'. You should have one temp folder for Windows. Double click this. Select all files in your temp folder, then press delete. Depending on the number of files you have in that folder, this process may take a few minutes.Second, try copying the entire contents of the setup folder to your hard drive and then run the setup.exe from your hard drive. Make sure you still have the Emperor disc in the CD-ROM when you do this.Third, try to change IDE transfer mode from DMA2 or PIO Mode 4 to PIO 1 mode or standard mode. Most of the new drives are now shipping with DMA2 and PIO mode 4. This change can be done in System BIOS set up if the BIOS setup allows.Fourth, right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". Then click on the [Device Manager] tab in the window that appears. Click on the "+" next to the "CD-ROM" listing. >From whichever drive you're using to install, double-click on it (or click once and select the properties button below) to access the properties of the drive. Under the [settings] tab, make sure you turn *off* the checkbox for "DMA". If it is already off, you may want to try turning is *on* to see if that works too.Fifth, from the same settings window as the DMA, try turning *on* "Autodetect", if it's not already checked.Sixth, if the DMA switch doesn't work, or if it's not an available option for your CD-ROM, please check with the CD-ROM manufacturer's website for an updated windows driver. Sometimes in addition to the driver a company will offer firmware code updates to the actual hardware in the CD-ROM. Either of these have worked for other customers having the same compatibility issues.Note: for Windows 2000/NT users you may need to edit your registry. To do this, change the DMA setting for NT (as the DVD/CDROM isloaded as a SCSI(ATAPI)) device as below:-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesatapiParametersDevice1DriverParameterand change the key value from "DmaDetectionLevel = 0x1;" to..."DmaDetectionLevel = 0x0;".Seventh, you may attempt to install Emperor on another system to be sure that the CDROM isn't faulty. If you are still experiencing installation problems, please see visit this link and download the update: ftp://ftp.westwood.com/pub/emperor/update/EMPENGINSTFIX10.ZIPThe directions about how to apply this update are included in the download. Make sure you read and print them BEFORE proceeding to the other files. The instructions are named emperor.txt. "Doc" Nyar...[This message has been edited by Nyarlathotep (edited 02-01-2002).]
Nyarlathotep Posted February 1, 2002 Author Posted February 1, 2002 I've been pretty busy (here, work and family life), so I'm sorry if I've forgotten about any ones problem. Question is.. did I forget someone ?Sorry if I did, but post here and I'll get back to you asap."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted February 1, 2002 Author Posted February 1, 2002 Time for a recap:1) Make sure you use “scandisk” & “defrag” (in this order) regularly (once a month is what I do). It’ll increase the stability of your hard drive(s). To access those options, open windows explorer and select properties when you’ve selected your hard drive. 2) Another thing you want to do is to note if the program worked before. If so, try checking what you’ve changed to the system or what programs you installed after the last time the program worked. One of the internal errors received is “xxxx.exe cause an invalid page fault……”. This usually indicates that the program has become corrupt. Most simple thing is to remove the files from the directory of the program in question (no uninstall, this way you’ll save your saved games). Once done, reinstall the program. 3) Another thing is to rename your “config.sys” and “autoexec.bat” files, in order to avoid any conflicts with DOS based programs. In windows just open explorer, locate the files (should be on the main drive, usually C:). I would suggest to give it the extension “old”. In DOS mode, go to the drive where both files are located. Type “rename config.sys config.old” and “rename autoexec.bat autoexec.old” (reboot when done). 4) (AGP) Video card related! : First of all, verify that your system supports the minimum requirements provided by your graphics card manufacturer. Primarily, make sure if your graphics card is an AGP card, that your motherboard meets the AGP 2.0 specification. If your motherboard does not meet the AGP 2.0 specification, then it may become unstable, especially when you are running 3D applications. If you are unsure if your motherboard is AGP 2.0 compliant, please contact your motherboard manufacturer and ask them if your particular motherboard is AGP 2.0 compliant. Also, your system should be running at least a 235-watt power supply (250-watt is preferred.) If your motherboard does meet the AGP 2.0 specification, then check that your motherboard is using the latest BIOS. You can locate the latest BIOS from your motherboard company’s Web site or from the Web site of the company that assembled your PC. Please contact the maker of your motherboard for assistance in flashing your motherboard with the latest BIOS. Flashing a motherboard BIOS is very difficult, and if performed incorrectly, can permanently damage your graphics card. You may also need to update the AGP controller drivers for your motherboard. Some smaller computer retail stores that build custom PCs often tend to forget to install the drivers for the motherboard. This will lead to lockups when running in 3D mode. Please check with your motherboard manufacturer for the make and model of your PC chipset, and download the latest chipset drivers from their Web site: VIA chipset - www.viatech.com AMD chipset - www.amd.com ALI chipset - www.ali.com.tw SIS chipset - www.sis.com.tw Intel chipset - www.intel.comIf you are upgrading a graphics card, then make sure the drivers from your previous graphics card are properly uninstalled. Please contact the manufacturer of your previous graphics card to find out how to properly uninstall the drivers. If the drivers are not properly uninstalled, they can conflict with other installed drivers, and slow down the performance of your graphics card, are not properly uninstalled, they can conflict with other installed drivers, and slow down the performance of your graphics card. Be sure that there are no programs running in the background that can affect the stability of your system. Virus protection programs, peer-to-peer software, and crash guard utilities can affect the stability of your system when playing 3D-intensive applications. Disable these utilities and any other programs before you run any 3D applications or games. With more devices being included in today's PC systems, it forces system builders to install components that share IRQ's with other devices. Some components do not like sharing IRQ's and can lead to system lock ups.. To check this, click on the Start button -> select Programs -> select -> Accessories -> select System Tools and then choose System Information. Click the plus "+" sign next to Hardware Resources to expand the list and then click on IRQs. Look for your graphics card on the list. Generally, the graphics card should have its own IRQ and not be sharing one with any other device. The only thing that should be sharing the same IRQ as the graphics card is an “IRQ holder for PCI steering.” If you have anything else sharing the same IRQ as the graphics card, you must change that device's IRQ assignment. The easiest way to do this is to simply to move the device, which is sharing the IRQ with the graphics card, to a different PCI slot. Some motherboards also allow you to force an IRQ. Check with your motherboard manufacturer to see if this feature is available on your motherboard. 5) Try disabling “advanced power management”. In the BIOS, look up the option power management and disable it. In Windows, right click on “my computer” and select “properties”. Click on the “device manager” tab and locate the “System devices category”. Click on the “+” sign to expand the system devices. Locate “advanced power management support” and double click on it. Put an “x” in the box “disable in this hardware profile”. 6) One other thing to try, is to put “REM” before “LOAD=” and “RUN=” in the win.ini file. Go to start => run. Type here “sysedit”. Some screens will pop up. Locate the win.ini file and put REM before the two lines above. Do not forget to “save” when you’re done. Reboot when finished. 7) If the game freezes, or turns black, try the following (Don't know if it'll work, but if so, it's your video card which is causing the problem): Win 98, right click on the desktop and select properties. On the Settings tab, click Advanced. Click the Adapter tab. Use the Refresh Rate box on the Adapter tab to manually reset the video refresh rate for your monitor. To do this, follow these steps: On the Adapter tab, click Adapter Default in the Refresh Rate box. Click OK. If you are prompted to test the setting, click OK. If the setting appears to function properly, click Yes. If the setting does not function properly, click No. If the above doesn't work, following: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click Graphics. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting). Click OK, and then click Close. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes. 8) If the game locks up when you start it, try to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration. Follow these steps: Click on start => run. Type there dxdiag. Select the “Display” tab. Near the bottom you’ll see some options, which are enabled by default. Disable Direct3D hardware acceleration (reboot in needed). 9) SBLive! users !! If the game stops responding, try the following (make sure you've updated Liveware! to the latest version !): Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click Multimedia. On the Audio tab, click Advanced Properties under Playback. On the Performance tab, move the Hardware acceleration slider all the way to the left. Click OK, and then click OK again close Control panel. 10) When using the "Hardware Acceleration slider", try different positions on the bar, probably a light slide to the left already might work. 11) Another thing, try to reduce CD-ROM caching and prevent read-ahead activity: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. On the Performance tab, click File System. On the CD-ROM tab, note the current settings, and then move the Supplemental cache size slider to the Small position. In the Optimize access pattern for box, click No read-ahead. Click OK, and then click Close. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes. 12) Voodoo 3 users, try the 1.04 drivers. In addition, use this driver with the option –c and/or +w behind the game’s shortcut. http://www.voodoo.dk/drivers/drivers.asp http://www.akvasan.co.yu/en/internet_ftp_drivers_video_voodoo.html http://www.voodooextreme.com/hw/Binaries/drivers.html http://www.zdnetindia.com/downloads/info/913299.html http://hegamer.freeservers.com/siteinfo/rdrivers.htm13) The various options you can put behind the game’s shortcut: - “+w” (without the quotes) will force the game to pre-load each movie into memory, before it’s played. - “-c” (without the quotes) will disable texture compressing. This option will mostly benefit Voodoo users - “-altvid” (without the quotes) will most likely be used when you have two videocards. The game might use the onboard videocard, in stead of the much better GeForce 3 for example. This command will force the game to use the highly appreciated GeForce 3. - “-s” (without the quotes) will disable sound in the game. You might want to try this to troubleshoot any problems you may have (in stead of removing the card from your system). - “+v” (without the quotes). I do not know what this does, but it has helped people who suffered problems with EBFD. 14) Make sure that the GeForce card is not sharing IRQ with any other device, except for 'IRQ Holder for PCI Steering' (Right click on “my computer” on desktop and select “properties” Go to device manager and select “settings” Here you can view IRQ resources for all devices). 15) Make sure no screensaver is active. 16) Try setting your desktop resolution settings to the following:1024x768, 16 bit. The refresh rate is set to default, or at least not higher than 70Mhz. Right click on the background => Select properties. From there, select the “settings” tab and click on the advanced tab. Locate the “monitor (or adapter) tab and change the refresh rate. 17) Make sure you install the latest AGP drivers from your chipset manufacturer (if you for example have installed a Nvidia driver). 18) Try turning off “V-SYNC” in the Nvidia control panel. 19) In the BIOS, check/change the following settings (try one at the time !): - Assign IRQ to VGA => Make sure it’s enabled. - Video BIOS Shadow => Disable - Video BIOS cacheable => Disable - C800 – xxxxx Shadow => Disable - Peer concurrency => Enable - Concurrent PCI Host => Enable - PCI streaming => Enable - VGA Pallete Snoop => Disable - Check the setting AGP4x and try changing it (depending on what your video card has been set to). - Try to change “AGP turbo”, turning up the “front side bus speed” or setting “AGP ration to 1:1 (in that order). - AGP aperature => try different settings - Virus checking => Disable - Turbo external clock => Disable - PCI 2.1 Compliance => Enable - AGP driving control => Change the value to “BA”, or any other setting, except for “Auto” 20) Install Intel’s chipset drivers for all versions of Windows (If you have Intel chipset that is). 21) If you have an AMD chipset based mainboard, install AMD’s latest AGP miniport driver. 22) Make sure there’s enough cooling for your GeForce, your AGP chipset and your processor. If your not sure, take the case lid of your system and possible, have a desk fan to blow inside the system. 23) Try going into the System Control Panel, Device Manager, System Devices, Direct Memory Access Controller, and changing the Access Restrictions (on the Settings Tab) to restrict DMA transfers to memory below 16MB. 24) If you have an MSI (6330) mainboard, try updating the BIOS to at least version 3.1. 25) If you have “CloneCD” (version 3.2.1.1) installed, try uninstalling or download the latest, as this version will clash with EBFD. 26) If you have nVidia TnT or GeForce/GeForce 2 card and you are running in 16-bit mode, you must check in D3D settings "Adjust Z-buffer depth to rendering technique". The option can be found this way: Right click on desktop >Properties >Settings >Advanced > Geforce bookmark >Additional Properties > Direct3d setting. 27) Running a game on Windows XP and it crashes ? Make sure you've updated all your drivers with the ones from your manufacturer (not the ones that come with Windows XP). And with all, I mean also your CDROM/DVD/CDRW drivers (I've heard of cases where updating the DVD drivers solved EBFD from crashing ??). 28) (Creative) Banshee blaster users:Locate the VMCDP.VXD file in “C:WindowsSystemVMM32”. Check what version the file is, probably will be 4.10.1413, is so do the following: Extract the VMCDP.VXD file from Windows 9x cabs (version should be 4.10.1998). Copy this file to “C:WindowsSystemVMM32”, overwriting the existing VMCDP.VXD file. 29) Try to set "Hardware Acceleration slider" to none and reboot. Once rebooted, set it back to full again and reboot. 30) Make sure you use "Windows update" regularly (Start => Windows update). "Doc" Nyar...

areyouforit Posted February 2, 2002 Posted February 2, 2002 Yeah nyar uh i got a problem with a illegal operation thingy sometimes while im playing emp. it closes and a little screen is on there and has a sort of a stop sign and on the top it says DDhelp itll take me a while to get info on it cause it only happens SOMETIMES.
Nyarlathotep Posted February 2, 2002 Author Posted February 2, 2002 Alright, I'll try to look for a solution without the details. If it comes up post here.."Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted February 2, 2002 Author Posted February 2, 2002 Btw, if anyone suffers ddhelp error, it's related to either videocard drivers, directX or both.."Doc" Nyar...
Guest redonblue Posted February 2, 2002 Posted February 2, 2002 Nyar......Tried all your advice.......but.....Solutions:1) I know there's a program that let's you play without cd.. You might want to give that a try.. thanks, but where do i find it? searched on google no luck....... 2) If your computer's mother board is based on the VIA chipset, you may need to download and install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers. This has resolved a lot of reported cases of computer crashes, locks and freezes as well as significantly improved many computer's performance......Yes installed these a couple of weeks ago.....3) There's a BIOS setting that, if needs to be changed, might resolve your problem without going any further. Make sure that the BIOS "DRAM Clock" value is set to "HCLK" and not to "HCLK + PCICLK". Essentially what this does is to lower you RAM's clock speed to 100mhz.......i tried this but PC screwed up.My CLK setting is HCLK-33......i have 128mb stick of 100 ram & 256mb sticks of 133 ram.......????4) If you are running any Virtual CD device software (or other CD-ROM tools), such as Daemon Tools, you should uninstall it....No.....none5) Try unchecking the DMA box found under your CD/DVD-ROM properties settings, under Windows' CONTROL PANELS>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER........made no difference.......6) If you have it, try disable the CD Detector program.......no.....Can't even get the error back.....now after the splash screen ,game just disappears.......thanks for trying anyway...Cheers
Guest lauden147 Posted February 3, 2002 Posted February 3, 2002 Nyar, I ran scandisck, that didn't fix it. I already went through the faq and tried everything, yes everything. Nothing fixed it. It still does the same thing it has always done. Also, my video card/network card/motherboard/other parts work fine. I play all kinds of other games and they work fine? Is there anything else you can think of that might be the problem? How long does westwood take to return tech support emails? I have been waiting for around a week and a half....Thanks again.
Nyarlathotep Posted February 3, 2002 Author Posted February 3, 2002 All, I'm going abroad for work for a couple of days. I'll try to be here during that time, but can't promise anything. Just to let you know that I didn't abandon you :D"Doc" Nyar...
Nyarlathotep Posted February 3, 2002 Author Posted February 3, 2002 I'll look into more suggestions.. In the meantime, keep me posted on Westwood tech support. If they do not reply within the next few day's, I'll see what I can do.."Doc" Nyar...
