SurlyPIG
Actually I think the numbers country-by-country are closer than one would assume based on the media coverage. Many countries are neutral or undecided. Of course, some would have you believe this is in fear of US backlash...

Now, how big it is, I don't know. Some see a possibility of placing themselves closer to their interests also.

Acriku
Where the hell do you get 8000? I have only heard a little more than 1000...Also, the city of Nizarae or whatever the hell it is called was just taken over, defeating the 11th Iraqi Light Infanty Division. They were going to surrender at first, but a Republican Guard came down and forced them to fight, but towards the end of the battle the rest surrendered. lowzeewee
WASHINGTON (AFP) - An Iraqi regular army division surrendered to coalition forces in southern Iraq (news - web sites), the first division-sized unit to do so since the start of a US-led ground offensive, Pentagon (news - web sites) officials said. The commander and deputy commander of the 51st Mechanized Division, based in Basra, which lay in the path of the invading US forces, surrendered to US Marines at an undisclosed location, the officials said. Their men lay down their weapons and surrendered to marines that they encountered, a US defense official said. About 8,000 to 10,000 troops are believed to be in an Iraqi division, although it was not clear how many troops were taken prisoner in this instance. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20030322/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_war_us_division_1

Acriku
If you mean the US soldiers - why would they? The less number of casualties the better. If you mean the Iraqi soldiers - they are fighting to the death, well some of them - others are just surrendering.
