]Bleh, the first nuke would have done it alone. After that the Japanese were ready to negotiate a peace treaty.

Instead the Americans nuked them again, mostly because they wanted an unconditional surrender, and besides that, they wanted to stop the war quickly because Stalin was chomping up Japanese occupation zones in Korea. The current border still marks the time when the second nuke was dropped.

well, the nukes where dropped shortly after each other... even the US didn't know that those nukes were so powerful, and even though i did not like the nuking, i must admit that Japan started the hostilities... and with their kamikaze actions they were causing a lot of chaos under the americans... sinking many battleships.

Saddam used chemical warfare on his people back in late 80s I believe, killing children, women, and men. Don't think it was toxins, but it was chemical.

Earthnuker, the Japanese tried the "peace treaty" tactic right before Pearl Harbor, I don't think they were totally convincing when they tried it again....

But they had a Japanese ambassador at Washington talking about a peace treaty, when Pearl harbor was attacked, it was a trick, and the Americans knew that it was a trick after Pearl Harbor making them even more angry, so when the Japanese try it again what are they going to do about it?

It's not about what I think, it's about what the American government thought back then, still angry about Pearl Harbor, and cautious to if the Japanese wanted to try one last attack.

"You actually don't think Japan wanted to negotiate? They were already losing the war anyway. "

oh, now this is bad. You don't know much about Japanese culture. Even women willing to die before surrendering. Japanese were notorious for there tenacity of fighting to the end. Even so far as picking up clubs and blunt objects to rush heavily armed US soldiers.

Negotiate was not in their vocabulary.

I agree with emprworm. i seen a documentary on when teh US were taking over a jap islnad and they refused to surennder even after they lost. at the end they attacked an outpost and were slaughtered.

dont forget about the kamakazi's(spelling)

The japanese were not realy losing no... they would fight on till the last man... and i think the americans lost more men than the japanese did, until the bombs.

Kami Kaze = "divine wind"... but that's a long story.

I'm neutral on the issue of the WW2 nuclear attacks. It was a necessary evil, the only question is how necessary...

In any case, those horrors (I absolutely despise nukes) taught the world a valuable lesson - a lesson that may have helped us avoid WW3.

i am with edric. we did not have the knowledge of nukes we had back then. they were just a really big bomb. now we understand how evil they are. you cannot use today's knowledge and apply it to the past.

Andrew...just something I noticed:Don't use "Jap" when you mean japanese;it is vulgar and coined by the servicemen of WWII

I will try not to then, just that it is quicker to type, maybe i'll just say "japan" instead.

sorry if i offended anyone. we are at least lucky that both sides of the war didnt figure out and produce nuclear bombs becasue then earth would be a barren wastleland

why? i dont get it. is it vulgar to call Finnish people Fins? Or Britons Brits? I guess calling Germans Germs wouldn't be too good. But Australians = Aussies, Spanish = Spaniards, Canadians = Canuks ;D,

why? because it was used derisively and is just rude. The japanese had an equivalent but it was more blunt and translates roughly to dirty american demons but was used to describe all allied soldiers. And yes it is vulgar as is using the word "jap" altho to us it seems like a simple abbreviation, some if not many japanese ppl know of or even remember the racial animosity of the time. And besides is just 5 more letters, theres no harm in typing or saying it.

No for any of them(except for the German part),but in WWII it was said disdainfully by people.IE it was MEANT to be vulgar, offending.

Think how small the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were as well...by today's standards they'd be small bombs. Look at your average hydrogen bomb for example, everything within 50 mile diameter of where it hits is just wiped out!
