This is an interesting thread- I'll look into it more.

Prior to the oktober revolution, all the power of Russia, both religious and governmental, lay with the czar Nicolas II. He wasn't a particulary nice ruler, and the people were starving to death. When the uprising was at high tide, the military refused to stop it and joined them instead, and Nicolas was forced to step away from the thronne.

Nicholas was not downed by communists. He abdicated in march, then ruled provisional democratic government led by Aleksander Kerenskij. Altough he was a socialist, he was a "menshevik", social democrat. After half-year Germans brought Lenin.

I am russian and I have lived, though only for a short period, in the time of Communism.

Russia was pretty weak under Nicolas II and was losing the war against Germany. That is one of the causes of the October Revolution. When it was over Russia withdrew from the war. Lenin was in power at that time. Then Stalin came to power and WW2 began. It ended in 1945, and the same year began the Cold War. It lasted till 1990, when Soviet Union's economy crumbled and it fell apart.

The hymn would be: Soviet Nerushimiy respublic svobodnix vlatila naveki velikaya ruc'

...

Those times were certainly bad for Russia. People were starving, etc. After Communism fell apart, Russia became democratic and is still struggling with its economic problems.

I didn't say the communists brought him down.

After the election, Lenin got only about 25 % of the votes. He wasn't too happy about this and declared the elections illegitimate. Lenin lead the Bolshevists (the reds) and his opponents were the whites (a particular general comes in mind, but I forgot his name right now).

And yeah, I'm Dutch. I usually find history interesting.

You mean Wrangel? Whole Europe fought on white side. There were much rebellion groups, but they had unified too late. Lenin was a good demagogue.

Russian joke:

Stalin, Kruschev and Breznjev travel in a train. Suddenly the train ahakes and he eventually stops. Stalin takes charge and yells:

"Shoot the engineer, send the train staff to Siberia and get me new people!"

Slowly the train accelerates again, but a few miles further it stops again. Then Kruschev stands up:

"Release the train staff and put everybody back to work."

The train starts moving again, but it stops once more. Everybody now looks at Breznjev. He thinks for a while and then says:

"Close all the window curtains, and it will seem as if we're moving!"

Btw, IMO the man that wrote the obituary of the Soviet union was Leonid Brezjnev. He secured his position and that of the other main members of the party for a lifetime. Eventually the Soviet union was led by nothing more then a collection of demented fossiles. Since there came no new people in the government, there was no initiative whatsoever.

Breznev, ten starij durak ?! He was one retrospective stalinist. Chruschev made some improvements, altough only little. But Gorbachov allowed more liberty and Union fell, with whole Warszaw Pact.

Kruschev allowed liberty of speech, and shed light on the crimes Stalin committed. The commie party didn't at all like his ways and made him resign for "medical reasons".

ten starij durak

starij = old i think..

Stari konj = old horse :)

But why was Warschau Pact Made?

And did Russia have a change to be a socialistic country, or were they all the time sabotaged by non-socialistic coutries?
