It was already mentioned somewhere else, but now a real discussion.

What do you think of dubbing, translating, of movies, and games etc.

I think it's bad. It's irritating. You don't hear (or read) the original meaning of what is said (or written). If you can understand original language what is translated, it is even nicer when you can hear it then. And not a dubbed rip-off, the same goes for games. Like refinery should be a refinery, and not a 'raffinaderij'. A translated word/phrase is always less good then the original.

Subtitles are ok, for when, by example, you don't understand the language...

I mean with dubbing, movies/games etc. which are not for very young children (who can't read) but movies/games, for people who can read...

I think you are complaining.lol I like subtitling better then dubbing. It is nicer that way. dont freak out about it though.lol

If you get it right, the meaning can be better in the new language. But it depends on the language - certain words in other languages have more specialised meanings which fit better than the original. eg I learn by enquiry is sometimes a better 'translation' by the intended meaning than the one given by the original language 'I find out'. It all requires understanding of the languages and texts.

But you must get it right - entire religions are based on mistranslations.

In germany we do "dubbing" with every movie, since we nearly only watch american movies.  And I like it.  Subtitles would suck, cuz who would want to read all the time?  Then you cant enjoy the movie and subtitles look crappy.  But we do this "dubbing" perfectly, so you dont realize that it was translated.  Its even synchron with the moving of the lips.  And so you are able to enjoy every movie in the language you understand best.  Personally, I prefer english movies in english, but since not everybody understands english, I think that "dubbing" is perfect if done right.

sometimes I see english movies on ARD and ZDF and it looks very bad.. hey guy keeps talking but the lips don't move.. And Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't have a high voice  ;D

Maybe it's because I'm used to it. But the dubbing is always bad. Just because the 'feeling' of the actor when he/she said something is not the same as the one who 'dubs' it.

And in some movies one guy is doing like 3 or 4 characters.. Just subtitle it, It's not disturbing or anything, and you don't have to read them  ::)

You don't have to read them, but some subtitles use a pritty big font. The mess up a lot of your picture.

TV should have the same option as DVD's. "no subtitles" - "subtitles ON" - "dubbing"

Some channels have double audio channels. Eurosport for instance. You can [ sometimes ] choose between your country's language or English.

You can do subtitle with teletext, but that's not fair since not everyone has it (like me). I think the 'primitive' ( ;D) tv will be obselete and you can watch tv over internet (like www.nederland1.nl) and have many options like subtitle (and dubbing ;)). And you can just choose what you wan't to looke, and you are not tortured but that scarce tv-offer...
