Hithchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Movie

I saw this yesterday, the fourth showing after it's release in my town. I can sum up my impression in one word: "Incredible."

Not only was the film true to the book, as Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay himself (with only moderate meddling). The narration was perfectly adapted to film, and Stephen Fry was the perfect man for the voice of the guide itself. Zaphod was incredible, and Sam Rockwell ('Guy', from Galaxy Quest) was the perfect choice for him.

Now for the film version of the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul! :D

I saw it on Thursday. And it was definitely worth it. Was it me, or was the grey-silver robot in the queue to hand in the Vogon presidential pardon form the marvin from the TV series?

It was, Nema.  Also, the Magrathean hologram was Simon Jones, the original Arthur Dent from the radio show and miniseries.

Anyway, I got to see this with my girlfriend a few days ago (we're both huge fans of the books, though I liked the campy miniseries more), and we both enjoyed it very much.  It expanded on the originals quite a bit; the [excellently done] Vogons had a much bigger part, among other differences.

My two main beefs were Marvin and Zaphod.  Marvin's voice was very good (it sounded a bit like Alan Rickman, which was great), but neither my girlfriend nor I liked the way he looked.  I always thought he should be lanky and slouching, instead of bulbous like that.  And Zaphod started out well, and the actor had the perfect 'winning smile', but for the last half, it was as if he were drunk or something.  He just became a source of cheap laughs.  The whole head-in-the-neck thing was also pretty silly.

I loved it.

And the reason Marvin sounded like Alan Rickman was because it was Alan Rickman (the voice anyway, the body was Warwick Davis.

Lots of homages to Douglas.  Exec producer credit, writer credit, creator credit, dedication, the heart of gold turning into his face....

yeah, i saw this tonight (with dragoon actually) and...

it was awesome :D you have to watch it as a work in its own right, using the HHG for ideas, but nevertheless i really enjoyed it :) Marvin rocked... and the world-building stuff was pretty...

It was great. And I really liked Marvin.

(SPOILER) [hide]And the way Marvin got up and shot the Vorgons with that gun. "Oh, I'm so so depressed".[/hide]

That might be considered a spoiler there, Beowulf... you should edit your post and hide the text. :)

But yeah, I went to see it with Ravus.  Great movie by any standard.  I'm trying not to compare it to the mini-series (which I own on 2-Disc DVD :P) or the books; it's just an amazing and funny movie. :)

I really like Martin Freeman in his portrayal of Arthur Dent; I don't think anyone else could have done better.  What I really liked, however, was Trillian (Zooey Deschanel).  I like how she seemed more of a solid character, rather than just the bimbo the mini-series made her out to be.  Plus, she is HOT :D

I miss all of the funny bits they had in the mini-series and didn't put in the movie (argument for the existence of God, etc) but what really gave me the tingles is when the title appeared again, and they played the original theme music from the series. ;D  I can just see the man in the space-suit flying through the 'O'... :)

*Goes to watch the mini-series* :D

God, I loved that intro music!  And the astronaut!  So campy, yet so funny.  I've got the DVD mini as well.  Personally, one of my favourites was the 'dish of the day' scene, with Peter Davidson (known for his role as the Fifth Doctor Who) as the Imiglean Major Cow.

Perhaps we'll see that again if (read: when) they make a Restaurant at the End of the Universe film.
