On this 50th anniversary of Playboy Magazine, perhaps a discussion of pornography is appropriate. Pornography is defined as

sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal. Those who promote it believe they are exercising their right from the first amendment of the United States Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The delicate question before us goes beyond the legal justification for allowing anyone to speak or write about anything they choose to. It speaks to the moral and ethical ramifications of such an enterprise. Our society today is inundated with references to sexuality in any medium we experience. The often quoted justification is that "sex sells" and therefore if marketing outlets can somehow equate a material purchase with sexual gratification, then some hidden unmet need will be satisfied. This is Freudianomics at its worst. Sex is promoted today as a means to an end and not the expression of love between consenting adults. Pornography portrays sex as some lustful hedonism with little regard for the potential outcome of such an experience. Still, millions of people purchase it for their own sexual stimulation. They believe that since those being filmed are consenting adults there is no harm to anyone. Assuming there is mutual consent among the actors, what is the difference between paying them to have sex with each other and paying a prostitute to have sex with you? Whether you favor or oppose pornography, it is this country's obsession with sex that is the root of the problem and the unfortunate consequences it produces. Until we as a nation can collectively mature out of this sexual pre-occupation we will be trapped in our own national adolescence.

Try to broaden your posts... or at least begin by saying you're only talking about the US, or something which defines what you're talking about, because it's rather diferent for the non-american majority of this community to comment on phrases like "Until we as a nation" when mostly, we are of another nation.

Anyway, pornography, as I have said before, is vile, immoral and degrading, has no constructive purpose, and deserves banning even more than pantomime.

pornography is a term used to cover several differant genres. go more in depth

BTW Iraq has a surge of XXX threatres and whore houses springing up across the country, oh and a famous televangelist admited to having a "porn addiction".

Does it matter? People who want to make money out of showing themselves off, fine. People who want to pay money to see what they can't do, fine. Just so long as it isn't too publicised. Public nudity is... odd.

have to agree, some of the greatest moral powers to ever exist, existed in ancient times with people of nations that hadent even heard of christianity.

For example, some great roman philosophers talk about chastity and it's importance to the young.

Confusious, during the early part of the first millenium, he was teaching the importance of the family unit, he wanted to bring people back to a more pristine state.

anyways, yeah I agree that people have a right in america, but that doesnt make it right. It makes the female and male body cheap, something that is valueless, which is horrible. It degrades both sexes and destroyes family at times even.

I doubt you will have much luck with the current generation, for we are stubborn and enjoying ourselves.

I only wish the Majority of Americans shared your opinion. We are one of the leading producers.

over 70% of internet buisness is porn related.
:O Yikes!!! There are literally billions, if not trillions of web pages on the internet! Do we really need that much porn?

Well, you can't exactly direct blame towards the pornography companies themselves, afterall it is the demand for pornography that has created such a large amount of them in the first place. Says a lot for human nature and how close we are to other animals heheh.

We cant get rid of Internet porn! like you said its some 70 some percent off all internet pages. Think what that would do to the econemy! if anything we need more porn sites to get this countries ecomey rolling! :P

''Says a lot for human nature and how close we are to other animals heheh. ''

Don't want to get off-topic, but I hope you are not suggesting the the human race is just an extremely advanced species of animal. If anything, it seems likely from obvious evidence and previous threads related to such things that their may be a ''level of humanity'' as such with different humans attaining different levels.

In a way, pornography actually shows the ability for some to overcome nature's programming in ways that could probably be discussed for some time, as people who could go out looking for mates in a modernized fashion (which would suggest that all of us are just advanced animals) instead choose pornography instead to satisfy their hedonistic urges because they know actual intercourse could have negative consequences... even if we are animals and slaves to nature, some have found a way to trick their programming/ nature had made some mistakes

I apologize for going off-topic... unfortunately a generalized and rudimentary ''4 AM'' style post such as this will probably demand a response... resulting in much devestation of this thread ;D ;D :-[ :(

Or we could just focus on the topic at hand... shouldn't be to hard with a thread title like this one's ;D ;D

I presume pornography and its popularity both stem from the conscience playing into its darkest pleasures. No victims, no one but yourself, to play out the wildest fantasies that you know cannot be played into the real world without grave consequences. It's the freedom that we ourselves have been waiting for.

Agreed :) . I don't think there's anything wrong with the subject pornography itself, i do think though that the pornography that does exist is realy bad... they should create some high level pornography ;)

nah, it's better to have a girlfriend anyway.

What exactly is wrong with Pornography?  In most of the legit magazines, the ladies (and men) actually consent to the pictures being taken.

However, is pictures of a 16 year old Pornography or Child Porn?  Would it make any difference if the countries legal age for Pornographic Pictures is 16?  What would then happen if the age was changed to 18.  Would all those who bought the magazine called "Barely Legal" be arrested for child porn charges?

Before anyone suggests, I dont buy porn, I never bought this magazine, I just know about it.
