They've tested this 4 times without human pilots, so most likely getting off the pad will be a success. First two times, were empty tests. Third test had animals to test life support, notice the lack of photos from the end of it. Fourth test was crash dummies, saying they're somewhat confident.

However, notice they've cancelled live coverage of the launch. That says to me at least, someone in the government is worried it might fail, and be a huge morale blow instead of a huge surge in nationalism.

Personally, I think China never rushes into things without careful planning and planning. I think that this will be a success. On a sidenote of interest, this would make them the third nation to ever put someone in orbit on their own, currently a distinction held only by the USA and the former USSR.

Edit:

9:36 PM ET

China has launched, major news agencies supporting Xinhua's claims. China has become the third nation to place a human in space on its own at 9:10 P.M. ET! Congratulations to the PRC.

i love space travel things in general, doesn't really matter to me who does it. Incidentally, do you ever think they'll go for the moon, and how happy do you think the US government will be about that?

I don't think China will be nearly as far as America is, to get to Mars. That's like swimming in the rapids after being held in a kiddie pool for the first time.

Give them time. They did this didn't they? Besides, when China commits, they do all they can to follow through, quite an admirable trait.

The news said that they are planning on a moon base within 15 years or so. Mars was just an example, but it is the most probable location we will try to go to in the next step of space travel.

yeah go back to the moon, the moon kicks booty. altho i think on the moon the permanently black sky would depress me, at least there'd be a bit of colour on mars.

anyone think the shenzhou craft looks cool? i love rockets in general. no sly remarks.

Current headline of drudgereport.com

China's first manned spacecraft did more than simply showcase Beijing's efforts for civilian space flight. The Shenzhou 5, or Divine Vessel 5, spacecraft also conducted intelligence-gathering work for China's military, the WASHINGTON TIMES will report in Friday editions. Developing...

Ship itself is very like Sojuz, but say honestly: can be there a better design? ::) Those are things which don't need to improve. But carrier rocket is very different from Sojuz TMA class.

Yep I heard someone talking about war in space seeing how there is so much money in satellites up there they may need to protect them. But I think we are still a fair ways away from fighting in space.

It's very encouraging to see that at least someone still has an ambitious space program...

Anyway, I'd love to see another space race, but do you really think it's likely to happen? Unless China does something really big (like setting up a Moon base), I think the US will just ignore it. After all, so what if China starts doing stuff in space and putting a man on the Moon? Been there, done that...

Actually Edric, NASA scientists have released information concerning their plans for sending a probe to the Pluto planet, so the interest is still there despite what the media does not show on television.

Posted

That's good to hear! But they'd better hurry, seeing how Pluto's highly elliptical orbit is currently taking it further and further away from the Sun...

Of course, what I'm really criticizing NASA for is their complete lack of initiative in manned spaceflight.

NASA and Russia are now united, but bound by lack of motivation. Europe prefers funding the earth soil itself, Japan tries to become as commercial as possible in this task. So China will be a leader of direct space research now? Well, I would say those money can have better use, but I know, technocracy is an illness impossible to cure...
